An amazing day, incredible beach day, shelling was off the hook.

Fairfield Univ graduation, eye candy galore, heading out for a walk into town, then to finish off this keg. Temp talk has gotten beyond boring, its sunny its warm its spring.

Well, my friends are now on Denali for 21+ days. Dropped in at 7,200'. First move is to move supplies to 10k then to 14k to set up base camp. That will take several days. After that it'll be a matter of waiting for a weather window to make a push for the summit and the eventual ski descent back to base camp. Temps remain well below zero on the big hill.

The two seem to go hand in hand. Ever been up a big hill? The real kick will be skiing off the summit. Had planned to go to Denali when I was there a few weeks ago but no weather window opened. Had to make due with the small hills.

Wow--highest I've been is the top of Breckenridge by the T-bar--about 11,500 and well above the treeline...it's quite the rush with the view

That's plenty high. Don't always get a chance to hangout for too long on the summits but the views are killer. Made a cup of tea and looked out at the Pacific in the distance from the summit of Mt.Shasta for an extended period before we skied off but that was the longest I've stayed up top. Usually it's just a few-15 minutes and it's over the edge and the express lane down. Lots o' rain here tonight.

Having incredible snow withdrawals... looking back at pictures from this past winter, it was really the winter of Holiday snowfalls.

SNE had the Halloween Thumpin' of the Pumpkin to start off the snow season.

Then up here we had a nice synoptic event on Thanksgiving, leaving 10.5" in town.

2011%2011%2023_0062_edited-1.jpg

Christmas Day saw a forecast for a chance of snow showers turn into a surprise upslope event (6.5" town, 8-10" mountain)

...leaving us with another scenic, white holiday period between Christmas and New Years.

Then MLK weekend started off with blinding upslope snow squalls that blanketed town with a fresh 9.7" and another wintery holiday.

Coupled with the SNE snowfall around Halloween, last season was a good year for snowfall on holidays and that was about all it was good for. Unfortunately, constant thaws never allowed the snow to really build up like 2010-2011.

Now I need to figure out how to get through the next 6 months without posting different snow pictures everyday.

All this mountain talk reminds me of my summer of 1982 ascent on Mt Whitney, 14,495. We started at Whitney Portal about 8500 ft. While the trail up to the summitt is well traveled, getting hit by a storm at 12,500 almost cost us our lives. We got to a place to pitch tents where there were gazillions of marmots, One of the 3 of us opted out. The next day my friend and I nailed the summitt. Over 10,000'ft your head hurts when you hve no acclimation time. Above 14k you literally wheeze as if you have emphysema. Once we nailed the summitt, we hiked all the way down and drove to LA...same day.
