When the board was split into subforums the point of it was b/c the board was growing so large and everyone posting in a few threads they would grow at a pace so quickly it was nearly impossible to keep up and many threads would get buried way too quickly. When the split occurred and mods/admins told us we could utilize this to make many different threads to keep thread growth rate reduced and keep threads mainly to one topic. I don't think the idea of it though was to make it an OT section as well.

I think the problem with this is when we were encouraged to make many different threads many just started making threads for anything and probably doing it in a joking manner but then it just got out of hand. Brian/Will/Bob/Ekster are all very lenient with all of us and I think b/c of that we take advantage at times.

The board is huge...thousands of people with thousands of personalities. How you police it..I don't know, but I don't see this going away during times like the summer when there is nothing better to do, than try to verify a weenie prediction of 70F dews. I think that's just how it is.

You've got some good points, but my response to that would be that the few banter/quasi-weather threads we have aren't necessarily "burying" our weather threads and its still pretty easy to find event threads if you scroll through to find them.

The ski and lawn threads are always near the top of the page because people participate in them. New ones aren't started every few days so if you go through ALL the pages of threads we have, so far you'd only find 2 ski threads (one for last year and now one for this year) and you'd also only find 1 or 2 lawn threads (one for this summer and one for last summer).

I know it seems like we have a lot of them, but we don't. They just stay near the top because people like them and participate in them. There aren't loads of these "off-topic" threads burying all the weather threads. The weather threads get played out when an event is done or a time period over, and then they slowly move down the list.

This is the bottom of the first page of our sub-forum.... pretty much all weather related topics. You go to the next page and its all weather related topics, too. The few banter threads we have just stay near the top. Its not like you go to the next page of threads and find 4 more ski and lawn threads.

There really aren't many of these so called off topic threads... they just stay near the top because people post in them.

Its not like a new one is created each day burying everything with un-needed threads.

Good post...I see what you're saying.

And when one person jokes around..it invites others. That's just how it is, and I've been part of it. I like some humor here and there.

But, the regional bickering is like comparing weenie sizes. It's fooking snow. Who cares. One spot might get more snow than another, but that same spot is in the boonies while the other spot is a trendy city. I mean.....I just don't get it. Who the hell cares. I live in RIC compared to Stowe VT, but that's just how it is.

the problem, for me personally, is the board is just a giant pissing contest now. *all the time*. it's all about being right and wrong and verifying stuff.

you can no longer just toss around thoughts and ideas for the sake of discussion without someone going and grabbing the quote 5 days later and calling you out. it's weird and f-ed up and makes posting much less enjoyable.

Agreed totally. There's nothing wrong with the banter threads the real issue is everything you describe above.

Personally, I try to keep my posting in dedicated storm/weather event threads to a minimum. I prefer (especially in Winter) to read Met analysis. I have no problem with the light hearted ribbing we do in banter threads. I feel it builds comradery amongst all of us. I mean, how can you not find LL lovable? I detest his favorite weather, I feel bad he lives in such a hot hell hole but hey, it's Joe, he's cool. I don't think there is much of a problem with our dedicated storm threads etc. When the weather is boring like this what better way to pass the time than bludgeon each other?

I wish the degree of meteorological discussion wouldn't decrease just b/c the weather is boring. Just b/c the weather is boring in the short/medium term doesn't mean there shouldn't be a loss of great discussion. Instead of really arguing over clouds/temps/dews we should have more discussions on long-term or just discuss past events (events which produced or didn't) and try to gain more knowledge and such.

I know we have the winter thread Will started which has had some great stuff but we should have more like that.

Fwiw, as an "outsider" , i have been and continue to be a fan of the banter threads, and even those here who dislike me will admit even I contributed to the ski thread a few times over the last winter.

That being said, and apologies in advance for dragging this up again, but most of the time that "outsiders" came here, it was far from unprovoked. The backhanded, annoying, d*ck measuring about snowfall comments are ignored a lot, but eventually someone will come in here and mock it. Should it be ignored? Maybe. But maybe those of you who find it just as annoying (judging by posts on other forums, there are a few of you) should speak up and "police" yourselves as well. If its all in good fun, as claimed, then the trolling in return should be viewed the same. Otherwise, its just hypocritical bs.

Good discussion and interesting wx go together. If there is no wx, it's hard to have a good discussion. Sunny skies, ridging, and SW winds can only be discussed so much.

Were the snow comments from Pete really that sensitive? I mean, make fun of us for lack of severe wx. Who cares..lol. I don't get it..this is coming from a guy in the Berkshires at 1400'.

I see what you're saying here but just b/c there is no interesting weather going on doesn't mean there can't be great discussion. There's always something that can be discussed whether it involve what the long range may offer given some of the signals or just discussing past events. In fact, some of the better discussions we have involve reminiscing past storms we've had.

Hence the trolling in response.....mocking idiotic posts with more idiotic posts is about as old as the internet. If i took it seriously i wouldnt laugh at it.

Again, I think you're over-estimating the amount of OT threads.

If you look at the 50 most recent threads, there are 4 that might fit this (aside from a couple SNE GTG threads): The Ski Thread, Lawn Thread, Summer Photo Thread, and the BANTER BANTER BANTER thread we are in.

Likewise, there are at least 6 different threads in the most recent 50 threads that are devoted to Northeast Convection/Thunder. Yes those are on-topic but why not put it all into one thread if you want to do one massive orgy banter thread? Did we really need over 6 threads in the past two months on convection? How many thunderstorm days have we actually had?

I'm just saying that I know some think there are too many OT threads in our sub-forum, but its really a very small percentage of the total threads on here.

Well we do that now and then, but a lot of previous storms have been disgust. I just think it's hard to really get down to the science of meteorology during the doldrums of wx. It's easy to analyze upcoming events with the data you have at your disposal now, then going back to previous events where it may be hard to get good data unless you saved it.

It sounds like some people took it seriously when he said " oh the poor MA...."

He makes fun of us and we live in the same state..lol. We give it right back making fun of how the nearest hospital is 30 miles away in a hunting cabin. I don't quite recall how this sh*tstorm began, but it was months ago. I'm surprised people really got so worked up over it.

You're right...I am overestimating it. It probably just seems worse than it is b/c they seem to be towards the top more often. Just hopefully others across the forum would realize this or to those browsing and don't think the wrong way.

When snow actually does fall down where you live do they plow or do they just let it melt when it changes over to rain?

the thing is...i don't even really know when it started or who did it...but it sucks. and i don't think it's just a summer thing. i feel like it's been going on for a while now. it's always existed to some extent, but never the way it is now.

It started this winter imo. There were no imminent threats and people claimed the d10 euro showed snow while others were celebrating warmth.

This is one thing that's really great about this forum too...with all the info/data that is posted and such this place also becomes a great reference tool as you can always go back and find data that you really can't get in archives and such or if it's out there it's real difficult to find.

Since our weather has been pretty much dead since October with the exception of some event here and there that certainly has lead to a major regression in quality posts. Hopefully we can return to more active weather (whether it be tropical or winter) and get some of that old style back.
