CoastalWx
A day 8 op post describing all of May? If you want to argue some mild wx, sure..I could see May above normal perhaps. The troughing doesn't have to mean cool and wet weather, but I don't see a torch for the 1st half of May at least...except for maybe the 2 days or so next week. I think what we need is to quantify "a torch"... what is a torch in May? I get the feeling some on here are thinking a torch is basically anything above normal (+2 or +18 doesn't matter) while the Mets are thinking more like mid to upper 80s is a torch. It depends, but highs in the 80s would qualify, especially early on.

My personal threshold for torch is >= +10. When we're talking about monthly definitions of torch, I'll go with >= +5, unless I'm hanging out with LL, then it's +3. And if it's March and warm (any positive departure), it's called "MORCH" ... Kevin taught me that one. He also taught me "Dry begets dry" which never fails. I am about 75%. notice the cottonwoods had a major issue with the freeze. They budded out those gnarly oily things in the March Heat wave then froze, no buds or leaves on any of them. Damage In Tolland
I don't think folks understand what leaf out means. Leaf out means the leaves are out..It doesn't mean the leaves are 100% fully grown lol.It just means the trees have had the leaves pop

Green with full leaves on the trees. So your backyard now looks like it does on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day?
NorEastermass128
How far ahead of schedule are things? I mean in the Woburn-Winchester-Lexington areas...it's like mid-summer out there (with regards to leaves out) I believe 2010 also had a real early leaf out with that warm spell during the first few days of April. Allenson
We're obviously ahead of normal around here this spring in terms of an early thaw (snow melt, ice out) and an early budding, flowering and leafing-out of trees and shrubs and the emergence of herbaceous plants but the calendar is slowly catching up with the season. Where we were once three-four weeks ahead of schedule, we're now more like two weeks. The state of leaf-out here above 1k as seen this morning--the lime green trees on the hillsides are poplar, the limbs at the top of the photo are sugar maples:
Mr. Windcredible!
Complete 100% leaf out would imply that looking at a forest it looks like it does during the majority of the warm season. Green with full leaves on the trees. So your backyard now looks like it does on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day? So you're saying leaf out implies leaves are at full maturity? If that's the case, full leaf out wouldn't be complete until leaves stop growing...which is when...mid-June? I'm gonna tend to agree with the KFS definition here...leaf out implies the leaves are fully out of the buds...but does not imply they have grown to their mid-summer size. If you go by that definition...we're probably at 80-90% in the valley around the NY Capital region.
