vortex95
I got the below from a recent PNS issued from WFO MKX. I realize this is just for the U.S., but do you see any discernable trends here, better or worse?...I don't. For 2011, most catagories, it was not the worst for the period of record. Hoosier
Maybe some downward trend with lightning deaths. Big year or two in some other categories tend to skew those averages.

CoastalWx
550 deaths from tornadoes is just unreal with todays technology Imagine the deaths if we didn't have this. It goes to show you what can happen when more populated areas get hit.
Ian
550 deaths from tornadoes is just unreal with todays technology Population growth, being unlucky... it's hard to survive violent tornadoes above ground.
Ellinwood
Population growth, being unlucky... it's hard to survive violent tornadoes above ground. On top of the fact that some of the deaths were in areas that were hit earlier in the morning and had lost power, so there was a disruption in communication. bluewave
One of the studies that I read shows and increase in insured losses in the US due to thunderstorms. Changes in wealth, population, and insurance coverage factor into the mix.
johnc
We'd have to plot it to be sure but it looks like lightning fatalities are trending down. Not sure if this is because we're smarter, or because, on average, people spend less time outdoors?
