Radar observed a couplet of 170 kt at the closest approach to Wichita. That's particularly strong.

Couplet was definitely there but CC never massively dropped nor was there an obvious reflectivity debris signal as it moved through Wichita. If this was a particularly violent tornado...we would have seen that like we saw back earlier in its life. Still obviously a damaging event but in terms of a massive disaster that seemed almost inevitable at one point...I hope we avoided that.

Would proximity to the radar site affect that, on the near side?

SWAT got amazing video of Tornado crossing right over them. Hopefully they can get it posted soon. They are talking about it on the stream.

Listening to their expression the video sounds epic. I can't wait to see it. On another note...they got very lucky. Night time chasing is extremely dangerous as evident in their stream tonight.

Mike Seidel starting to go too far with NWS Wichita interviews. Going to people on the warning desk now, not just WCM who was just overseeing operations.

Media does not belong in ops area during a high impact event. Put them in the conference room and let extra staffing handle interviews (if available.)

You are completely and utterly wrong if you think a 170 kt couplet at <1000 feet wasn't reaching the ground.

There was also a debris ball, albeit not classic.

That couplet was 170 kts at 500 feet AGL. Major damage has been done, and the reports are just starting to come out. Multiple building collapses with people trapped on the S and E side of Wichita and the city is calling for numerous mutual aid. To say a disaster was averted well before daylight even shows what happened, is a little premature.

Just saw a tweet about aircraft fuselage found in a field. Unk distance from airport.
