This is the first severe drought I can recall us having. Obviously I'm sure we've had them.. When was the last time we were in a "severe drought"?

Severitiy aside, it's impact has really been muted due to the fact that it's been during the cold/cool season. Hopefully, the deluge this weekend (at least I'm expecting one, though I know you're not) will bring us into a 'normal' precip pattern. Worst case, it can provide a healthy band-aid.

CTs worst was mid 60s. Severe or extreme drought every month for nearly 3 years... 1964-1966.

Oh really? That might have been a dry stretch for the rest of us too. I remember back in the summer of '99 I believe....the trees in PA were actually turning brown from the lack of rain...in August. I've never seen that before. It wasn't that dry here, but out there, it was a desert. That's bad.

CTs worst was mid 60s. Severe or extreme drought every month for nearly 3 years... 1964-1966.

Precipitation amounts for Bradley Airport:

YEAR JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUNE JULY AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC TOTAL

1964 5.54 3.43 3.63 3.76 0.87 1.68 3.07 2.46 1.42 1.98 2.20 4.51 34.55

1965 2.73 4.43 1.50 2.14 1.20 1.98 1.68 1.09 3.50 4.97 2.21 2.02 29.45

1966 3.05 4.40 3.15 1.38 3.01 2.72 3.96 1.90 6.05 4.23 3.82 3.60 41.27

Looks like a string of 19 out of 28 months of AOB 3.50 inches of precipitation and many of those months were below 2 inches.

I don't remember that. Same timeframe as this one..Has this 4 month period been drier than that one?

Here's my numbers from that period 2001 into 2002, very dry then Spring took care of it.

Oct - 1.19"

Nov - 0.96"

Dec - 2.62"

Jan - 1.89"

Feb - 1.90"

Mar - 4.04"

Apr - 4.33"

This year

Jan - 3.38"

Feb - 1.58"

Mar - 1.67"

Apr - 0.27" so far

Impressive numbers. The 29.45" is the driest year on record... by a sizable margin.

1964's 34.55" is tied for 10th driest. That gives you the drought!

Sucks for everyone dude. Lawn lovers, allergy sufferers, plant lovers, trees are suffering, animals are dying, fish are belly up..it's a disaster

We'll be fine. Life will go on. I did notice the pollen this morning.

BTW, someone start a new thread. This one is too long.

I took a deeper dive into the mid-60s and from 62-66 there was a string of 34/46 months with below average precipitation. Very impressive.

Driest year on record (lowest for any recording station) for all 3 SNE states was 1965, also for NJ/PA/DE. It was Farmington, Maine's 2nd driest, 0.9" more than 1941, and the rest of NNE was well below normal though not record setting.

In NYC, 1965 was their driest by almost 7", 1964 was 2nd, 1963 was 4th despite 8.25" in Nov.

1961..39.53 (Normal is 44-45")

1962..37.42

1963..34.50

1964..33.21

1965..26.28

Thru August, 1966 was running just 0.7" less dry than 1965, and that met summer was both hottest (since eclipsed by 2010) and driest in their 140+ yr record. On 9/21/66 they had 5.5" rain, and the pattern broke - rest of 60s were slightly above normal, 70s averaged much above.
