I actually remember that. I think thunder was widespread.

I know 25" isn't great by any means, but we had some good storms and at least there was action to track. It actually wasn't that bad in the far interior since most of the events were so marginal in terms of boundary layer.

Jan/Feb in 1997 were awful here...Jan '97 had that one really good event for SE MA but it whiffed us here. All of our fun came in Dec '96 and Mar/Apr '97. Of course, that "fun" added up to a lot of snow. We had 87.5" that season....only 13-14" of it fell in January and February

Its been such a pain to keep saying "well qpf might be an issue" or "worried about the dry air" or all that crap. We've sounded like moneypitmike most of the cold season, but its been true. So many disorganized systems. Even the one good one we had recently in the interior (Feb 29-Mar 1) was a disorganized mess that lasted over 30 hours to get our 8-9" of snow.

The night before the last system, I really started worrying about qpf here (it was always a bit of worry north of CT)...it snowed for like 90 minutes at Kevin's and he got 2" of snow. If only we had that 4-5 hour burst we were looking for, it could have been a nice little event widesread. But it seems like we say that about most events this year.

Some years we are saying "oh man, if it had been 1C cooler in the mid-levels"...not this year. Even though its been a torch overall, we have had every system be so dry and not rain all over us with 2 inches of rain.

Hopefully this last setup can produce a coastal...it looks pretty good on the large scale pattern, but you are always waiting for it to look uglier and more strung out as you get closer.

It snowed for about 4 hours overall. it stopped for about 30-45 minutes between 7:00-7:30ish

What did ORH get on 4/1/97 and how does that rank in their biggest events?

33.0" and ranks #1 as their all time biggest storm total. I still believe Dec 1992 was actually more as I measured about 3" more in that storm than 1997, but they are close regardless.

Even if this winter was destined to suck which started to feel that way by January...I figured we could get a coastal storm or two and have parts of the area..if not all get some siggy snow. Not this time. It's funny how winters tend to have themes. Some just snow and storms have the right timing and the right track, others will always find a way to screw the area. It obviously hearkens back to teleconnections because that's the reason why winter can have these "themes."

Yeah but most of your accumulation came in like 90 min...you went out for a jog with nothing on the ground and 2 hours later you had most of your accum...yeah it snowed another couple hours but it only added up a little.

That's what we were hoping to see for a larger area...that nice burst you got for 90 min to two hours...except lasting a bit longer. Instead we got mostly weenie snow.

I was thinking of 1997-98. Both 96 and 97 had good Decembers.

I figured we could get one or two decent coastals...plenty of garbage winters have had them. Its easy to play revisionist MMQB and say "well we did't get a coastal because the winter was already sucking"....but that wouldn't work with a lot of other crappy winters. Its really what separates the mundanely crappy winters from the horrific ones like this year.

Hell even '06-'07 finally had some coastals (and people forget so soon how BOS actually had less snow than this year thru the end of the February).

Yeah Dec 1997 had one of my favorite events of all time. Otherwise a pretty crappy winter and a painful bust (for us interior folk) in Feb 1998....but that winter will always have that 12/23/97 event that stands alone for its snowfall intensity...even greater than any of the big ones I experienced here.

Yeah exactly. That's why I figured we'd have a shot at at least one or two storms. Guidance always seemed to hint at some possible changes, but in the end..models were usually too aggressive to weaken the AO for a period of time. The base state was just so dam stable across the North Pole.

And Miller B's are good for NE CT..but tend to screw the valley. Granted I don't jack..but i get plenty of good snow from them

You guys had an exponentially better winter than I had...even with your lack luster amount. My biggest storm was 3.9" and gone within a day.

Looks like 4/10-4/12 is our last shot here to grab a decent event this season....hitsorically that has been a hotspot set of dates in April for here. Hopefully it pans out. But I'm not expecting it to at this point. At least it looks deeper and more "coastal-inducing" with the trough than what we just had which was more trying to dig something sharply from the NNW.

Yeah it doesn't look all that bad from a set up standpoint. Would be nice if this winter at least ended on an interesting note, but we all know better than to expect something worthwhile...lol.

I hope the newbies (particularly across ern areas) take this winter as a reality check. This is why you cherish and hold those winters that blessed us with 50"+. Many of them may have been too young to remember much before '92-'93.
