Spring "Freeze out"

I had a dusting of snow on the morning of May 1st 2-3 years ago, the low temperature was 32.3-32.5. The high was in the 50s that day. It must have been very isolated to my area. it was on the back edge of some precip that lagged behind a cold front. I did not hear anyone talk about it on the news, I should have took a picture.

Yeah sometimes snow can show up in isolated pockets like that. I remember flurries into May, but never any accumulation. 32° wouldn't affect many plants at all, but it looks like Friday night it may get kinda chilly back in the western Lakes to cause some more havoc with the plants.

While on the subject of late snow...

The latest measurable snows imby since I began measuring in 1995:

May 3, 2005: 0.1" - A heavy midday snow shower briefly coated the ground and melted in like a half hour

April 23-24, 2005: 6.7" - Snow fell for some 36 straight hours, peak depth 5.5". Was all gone by early afternoon April 25th

April 18, 2011: 1.3" - Snow blanketed the ground in the morning and slowly melted throughout the afternoon

Our thumb posters may remember April 27, 2004 when 1-2" fell (we had a trace in the Detroit area, snow showers fell all day).

May traces:

May 20, 2002: A few flurries..just insane

May 12, 1996: Few flurries

May 2, 2005: rain/snow showers (so snow fell May 2 and May 3)

May 1, 1996: Few flurries

********

Three times in history has Detroit seen a 1"+ snowfall in May:

May 21/22, 1883: 5.0"

May 13, 1912: 1.5"

May 9, 1923: 6.0"

It would be fitting if YYZ gets nailed in the spring following a winter(s) where they have been low balled and snowless. Bad luck for Canucks as of late

With that said I wouldnt get ahead of your self. The ECMWF isn't spring perfect.

Yeah, I won't get my hopes too high yet, though it will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

I was looking at some of the latest snowfall around here...

05.12.06: Flurries - early in the morning

04.11.07: 5.9" - snow lasted all day. Snow didn't melt off until the morning of the 13th.

04.18.11: 3.0" - snow slowly melted off throughout the day.

04.22.02: Trace

Yeah GFS is consistent in saying winter is done. Still get our cool shots but time to move on. I stopped wishing for more snow/freeze weeks ago when the green came out. It's just disaster type stuff for a lot of people at this point.

The GFS was the only model that was suggesting winter was going to show its head again. I wouldn't write off snow for northern and central WI yet. Not wishing for it to come back at this point though.

Winter ( perpetual late fall ) died in Feburay for the southern lake cities. It's not coming back for 7 months. The fantasy snow storm was short lived but fun. I think the UP and northern WI could still see some light accumulations. Heck Marquette got some wintery snow yesterday.

With the 12z run the GFS continues to suggest the freezes are over for areas sw of the lakes. The air coming in for the weekend doens't appear to be very cold anymore. The GFS briefly takes our 850 temp to 0 or slightly below, but quickly moves warmer air in from the west. I think I may go ahead and plant some of my overwintered plants(salvia black & blue).

I use the winter term loosely. If snow comes anytime of year (outside of the 3 mo. season), I consider that a taste of winter- even if it's a day long. I think from Steven Points, WI to Alpena, MI has a shot at a dusting of snow late this week.

Haha, Marquette can have a taste of winter anywhere from late September to mid May!

I heard mention for snow for N Michigan later this week. Not out of the ordinary,BUT I was hoping it would be done the way the spring has been so far. I know, you can never count out the U.P. and N L.P. for snow until well, I seen snow flurries in July in the U.P. before lol.

I've heard of people seeing ice pellets and wet snow flakes in June. Lol. Detroit would be like 66 and Marquette in the low mid 40s.

lol to the posts declaring winters over we need to move on. Ummm...is there anyone on here who DOESNT know winter is over? Winter is always over in April anyway, and in fact it ended this year in early March. Once you get past the 2nd week of April, Detroit has NEVER on record had 2 days in a row with 1"+ snowcover. There is no doubt that winter is over, whether a fantasy snow would come to fruition or not it would clearly be a flash-in-the-pan snow-melt type deal. And to those saying who would want snow this late when its a boon to nobody? Well, cold, miserable steady rain with temps in the 30s/40s appears likely anyway, so Id much rather at least see snow falling if it will be damp and cold.

Winter ended back in December for me to tell you the truth. LOL

EDIT: It never started actually..what a horrible winter, I was always afraid of a winter like the one we just had. Thankfully it seems like it went by quickly..and it was not a plain, cold, long dry winter. Very short in duration.

The numerous sunny days in the 40s made this past winter a gem. If its not going to storm and pour snow then pure sun and 42 will do.

Looking like another upper 20s - 30 deg. night ahead. Edit: new 0z map even colder for Saturday morning for SE WI. Some 27°'s in there.

Probably won't plant anything until after this EURO cool down lifts out.

I totally expected a winter like this sooner or later, we were beyond due for it. I was just blindsided that it happened in 2011-12, when everything in Fall supposedly pointed towards another severe winter (another lesson to never take LR forecasting with more than a grain of salt). We were due, time to move on hopefully right back to snowy times starting next winter. The arctic front and blinding snow on Feb 10th was actually one of the coolest things Ive ever been out in, but one event will NEVER make/break a winter in this region for me. Probably the most disappointing winter Ive ever experiened, but actually, I feel that the fact that 25-30" of snow still fell in the immediate metro-Detroit is a product of the fact we seem to be in a "snowy" cycle this decade. Looking back, the ingredients were in place for this to have been among the great futile snow seasons such as 1881-82, 1918-19, 1936-37, 1948-49, 1952-53, etc. But it didnt even make a top 20 futile snow season, rather it was just painfully below normal.

LOL guys. Euro sure was a different story last night. It says lock in the trough in the east through the extended. Plenty of cool/cold shots for our region. Wow. Tropical must be spinning...

The real story is what kind of **** has the Euro smoking as of late? We can pick a model run apart all day but it's not worth it. Will say that the limited cold air anomalies in the Artic and around Canada point out that any "cold" shot will be transient and cool in nature. Like upper 50s under a beautiful blanket of blue sky.
