March 2012 General Discussion Part 3

Chicago Storm

Recommended Posts

I think Milwaukee/Chicago are about a zone 7 these days...It seems like a long time since MKE dropped below 0F.

lol - we've only dropped below 0 (-1) once this winter and and I think a total of only 10 times over the last 4 winters.. Seems almost as impossible of a feat to pull of as La Crosse only averaging 1.8" of snow for March over the last 4 winters.

Can't believe La Crosse has only had 6.3" of snow this winter since Jan 21st and only 2 snow events over 2" the whole season. 21.5" on the season has la crosse sitting in the 6th least snowiest winter spot. Only need 4.9 to get knocked out of the top 10 least snowiest - doable if it wasn't this yr but you never know I suppose.

Last two GFS runs keep the warm front south of here all weekend. Looks like no warm sector for me.

This will bust 20F too high:

Sunday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 78. South wind between 5 and 10 mph.

euro looks summer like lows sunday night and big big torch on monday

Lol, tired of the torch? :devilsmiley: I can't remember a time where you caved to the cold.

last measurable snowfall was back on March 4th leaving MKE sitting @ 0.4" from 30" for the winter.. 73 of the last 128 Aprils have seen 0.4" or greater.. If we need to rely on May to accumulate 0.4" that has only happened 7 times out of the last 128 yrs.

If we fail to reach 30" this will be the 1st time in the last 25 winters when mke had 21.9" back in 1986/87 and only the 3rd time since 1968/69 when mke finished with 29.9"

39.1 in Saukville. twice this week its been colder than Lake Michigan's water temp.. How does that happen, tropical?

Lol. High 43° today! Was supposed to be about 49°. Makes me wonder how low will it go after sunset. Dewpoint is 31° right now.

Lol, forecast says low of 40° tonight, already 38° out.

Bow-

Trust me...its even chilly over here with that strong east wind. You guys need to turn off the AC.

It doesn't feel chilly here, been walking around with short sleeves all day, even though it's in the 40s. I guess I've finally adapted to Wisconsin, just in time to go back to Florida most of April :axe:

This is going to be the 7th (if we make 30" this winter) out of the last 13 winters since 1999-00 that has finished in the 30" snow bracket.

Still averaging a tad over 50" for the 13 winters but talk a bout a kind of feast or famine last 13 of them.

That bad up there!? 3 out of the last 14 years has been under 40" here. Just over 40" of 2 other winters though.

Really soft...although I think its the wind. Its been a pretty strong all afternoon. This morning was pretty nice when it was still calm.

Its crazy that today is still above normal. Oh well...we paid for it last March when we never hit 60F all month.

Saukville loves days like today. He dreams of a stiff lake breeze...he especially like it when the wind first takes a ride across the length of Hudson Bay before hanging a left over Lake Michigan.

lol.. aww poor baby never hit 60 in march. I'd feel sorry for you if didn't hit 60 in april though.

MKE had 2 days in the 60's last March and 5 in the 60's last April.. no 70's in April.. Highest 60 in april was 66 and warmest day of the month was 84.. should have been a record but there was a freak 90 degree day back in 1930. 13 days were in the 40's or lower.. lowest temp was only 31 though.

Dam that's impressive.. MKE needs one of those slanted rulers they use in waukegan lol. Amazing how much more snow you avg than chicago and MKE.

Off to the last week of darts. Means spring is around the corner normally but it been for almost a month now.

Haha. I admit before this year I may be off a couple inches - too high. Otherwise between here and there it's pretty close. 04/05,05/06 there is a spread. I wonder what all happened in 09/10 though. Must have been mostly southern tracks missing Milwaukee.

Anyway...

I'm almost at the low of the day! 36.7°.

i'm just giving you shat and joking around. there has been a decent amount of racine/kenosha/and south specials where I'm stuck in a virga/dandruff storm and they are getting smoked. I remember one a few yrs ago where racine and kenosha was pushing a foot plus and here hardly anything. then there was that freak fluff storm that hit chicago area and nothing here. I can't remember dates for poop.

35.3 in saukville. enjoy that cold rain its so much better than snow :axe:

I added DTWs numbers next to MKEs, only 2005-06 and 2011-12 were quite close...kinda crazy how different the two places are most years.

Bow- LSE is just over 20 inches... Although I swear I had snow on the ground longer then you did.

Yup. NOWdata shows LSE had about 2 weeks more snowcover than MKE did this winter. Thats why Id always pick LSE being a snowcover hound. You guys average like 2" more per winter than DTW (though in recent years DTW has been owning LSE)....yet a full 30 days more of snowcover. Even this winter, 6" more snowfall at DTW, way less snowcover.

Just realized that March 5th will likely be our last sub freezing day of the season, which is very early. Just noticed that Detroit's last sub freezing high was February 11th! There was also a 32 degree high on February 25th. If that holds, I'm sure that February 11th date has to smash any previous record.

Yeah DTW just squeezed out 33F on March 5th. Still, for records purposes, Feb 25th would be the last day with a max temp AOB 32F (records go by AOB 32F, not AOB 31F). Id have to dig into records....NOWdata says the median date for last max temp AOB 32F is March 17th (which means half the years see the last subfreezing max before 3/17, half after).

Did a little daveling in some of the years I knew had mild Marches, and this is what I came up with for earliest last day with a max AOB 32F.

Feb 25, 2012

Feb 26, 2010

Feb 27, 1946

Feb 27, 1973

Feb 28, 1945

(Ironically DET, where official records were pre-1966, had a high of 32F this March 5th, which would certainly not be near the record. Odd to see this is one time when a cold bias would have been AIDED by what you would think was the more strong UHI station). However, just glancing at a few warm Marches isnt necessarily accurate (ie we could have more middle of the road Marches that were temperatures were more steady but still without a subfreezing high). Will be interesting to see if anything is written on this in the monthly climate writeups from DTX (they still do a good job on these even post-Deedler :) )
