That 37 from 2010 still makes me annoyed. That should have been more like 45+.

Yeah the number was representative of that 0.0001% of NYC that is most lush. I recorded 38 90F+ days in Monmouth County, but I'm in a fairly rural area. Recorded like 12-14 88-89F highs, so in terms of "feeling", I consider summer 2010 to have about 50-52 90 degree days.

Summer 2010 had some rough nights, as I didn't have A/C either and I lived in a two-story apt. Some nights we were in the low 90s at like 2 or 3 in the morning.

I can relate to how that feels. My freshman dorm had no A/C, and as soon as I moved in we had that oppressive five-day heat wave from August 29 through September 2 of 2010. On August 29 we got up to 96, August 30 got up to 94, August 31 got up to 99, September 1 got up to 99, and September 2 got up to 97. My dorm room directly faced the sun too. My room was stuck in the low 90's much of the time; it was unbearable.

If right now is any indication going forward, I think we are going to have some seriously high humidity this summer (especially if SSTs stay above normal).

SST temps are going to torch big time. We never got below the mid 40s offshore which is 5 degrees or more above normal. Talk about a launching pad! The marine layer has been hanging tough lately though so sst have not been rising as fast lately as you would think though.

Looks like 52,53,54,55 was a nice hot stretch as well. Does the 17 90+ days in 54 also incude the 100 +?

I often wonder though why media reports from the New York Times from those years did not always mention 100+. Typically they mentioned 97 degree heat. Was there a measuring method change?

the official temperature came from Battery place until December 1960...

From the battery...

1948...101 8/26

1949...98 7/29 8/8 8/10 99 8/9

1950...92 6/25

1951...92 7/27

1952...97 6/25-26

1953...99 9/2

1954...96 7/31

1957...97 7/21-22

1958...90 7/1-2

1959...96 6/29

1960...89 8/28

A sw wind was off the Bay and was cooler near southern Manhattan...

Then how do they have records to buttress the 100+ figures , for example 102 in 1953?

not sure what you mean...records were kept from battery place from 1870 to 1960...

Sorry, I couldn't type that much on my iPhone. What I meant was that the records you posted, and the records now posted on a daily basis in the New York Times show 100+ readings in NYC for 1952-5, and 1957. The "official" records being taken at the Battery show none of those. What I was asking was how anyone has the (presumably higher) records from Central Park.

Thanks for clarifying. And given that Central Park has gotten more lush over the years (remember it was an artificial park built during the 1870's) it makes sense that summer 100+ readings are harder to come by relative to LGA than in the past.

I remember the spell of hot summers in the 1950s. I vividly recall being on my bike during what most likely was the summer of 1955 outrunning an approaching thunderstorm. I was kind of scared of thunder and lightning then and needed desperately to get home to what was our house in Teaneck, NJ. I was with my friends at a playground when I noticed the sun was gone and it was getting dark. Thunder at first distant was sounding closer as I pedaled my 8 year old legs as fast as I could up this hill to get to my house. When I reached home, I threw my bike into the lawn and ran into my mother's big arms as the storm broke.

No it wasn't. Best summer ever for someone who does not have an A/C like me.

Winter should be cold, summer should be hot.

A/C isn't that bad. Just get if for the bedroom so you can sleep in comfort. Even my central a/c costs me a whole lot less than heat in winter.

  • 1 month later...

Figured we can kick up the summer/seasonal forecasts. I am still a bit leery of cooler weather this summer (for us summer weather enthusiasts). But I am also reluctant to go against the overall warmer than normal pattern. So I am going with a call right around normal. It wouldnt shock me if it goes strongly in either direction. I am also going with avg to above avg rainfall - hard to bet on sustained dry these days....

NYC 2009

June: -4 (84 highest temp) 10.06"

July: -3.8 (86 highest temp) 7.11"

Aug: + 0.5 (92 highest temp) 4.22"

No wonder there's so many complaints. You see, that's a summer even I wouldn't enjoy. Nothing pleasant about achieving below normal monthly departures if we need over 20 inches of rain to do it. I want 80, sunny, dews below 40 and a 10-15 mph breeze.

June 2009 was the worst June by far that I've experienced. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe we had a couple days around the 25th/26th with highs only in the mid/upper 50s with fog (no higher than low 60s). June was wretched, with very few pool days. July actually was beautiful if it was September. Many days near 80F with low RH and nights in the 50s, as Sundog enjoys. However, it was terrible for the beach/pool. Quite chilly. My 2001-02 (or 2011-12) version of summer essentially.

it was quite a miserable summer weather-wise for those who enjoy heat. i checked the dailies and dont see many highs lower than the upper 60s or low 70s Perhaps youre thinking 2003 before the turn around?

Ok, checked the records. It was the 18th of June that stayed in the low/mid 60s, pretty bad for averages in the low 80s. June 1-20th was generally in the 65-75 range most days. We finally warmed up by the last week.

The first 10 days of July were akin to the first 10 days of September avg wise.
