IWX notes records and then has the obvious warning of concern.....

GIVEN THE RECORD

GROWING DEGREE NUMBERS ALREADY ACCUMULATED TO DATE THIS YEAR...THE

POTENTIAL FOR A VERY DAMAGING FREEZE EXISTS IF ANY OF THE SYSTEMS

ARE ABLE TO TAP THE COLD AIR TO THE NORTH OVER SOUTHERN CANADA. AT

THIS POINT...TEMPERATURES SHOULD REMAIN ABOVE FREEZING THROUGH NEXT

TUESDAY.

This is why you want snow with any cold April systems. It acts as an insulator. Hope and pray the fruit farmers don't get a night below 25.

I totally get the hard freeze concern but i'm just not seeing anything close for at least 10 days and beyond that clime starts to become unfavorable

You're right for Chicago metro...but for places further north and/or away from Lake Michigan, a hard freeze is a concern well into April.

Even at Rockford, the median date for the last temp of 28F or lower is April 15.

I've absolutely loved it. It feels like Mother Nature is repaying us for about 5 straight Springs that have been just awful up here. We've seen cold, and some of the worst flooding in NW Ohio history sadly the last few years and we haven't really seen warm weather like this till mid May so to have it in early March is unreal. I'm just enjoying a pattern I expect to never see again

Oh don't get me wrong I enjoy the novelty of the record smatterings across the board and am still pulling for that 90. I just don't like being outside in this.. Too hot too early for me.. And a complete waste of the last legit snowfall month of the season..

That sums up the way I think of this mild spell too. I don't care to see 90°, but it's history we're living through right now!

For anyone interested in knowing approximate average last freezes - here ya go:

Paul Sirvatka and I were talking earlier today if after really thinking about it, if this is the most "extreme" event we have lived through.

It certainly ranks up there in the top 3. I would probably put the heat wave of 1995 a bit higher just because of the time of year. If I were older the heat wave of 1988 would be #1 but I was only 3 back then.

I can't think of anything off the top of my head that rivals this. What really sets this one apart is the duration. In most heat/cold waves, it's maybe 2 or 3 extreme days surrounded by less extreme days. In this case it's been day after day of extreme departures.

Sure I would have loved another snow event, but this March has been absolutely fantastic to me. So nice to be out in shorts/t shirt with no coat on. Nice to be outside in the evening just relaxing on the deck/porch.

For me the summer of '88 and it's relentless 100+ heat day after day tops this episode of extremes, but this ranks way up there very close to it.

Still 68 at 11pm. Figured the lower dews this evening would lead to a quicker drop off in temps, but the increase in clouds has kept temps up.

66° here tonight. Light SE winds. Looks like the record breaking temps are done west of the Mississippi due to clouds and rain.

I wouldn't want to experience the summer of 1995 again! This heat wave is much nicer!

All depends how you grade it...whether you put more weight on the actual temps, departures, duration, etc.  Not taking anything away from these events, but for me, I think this has surpassed 1995, the 1994 cold snap and any other memorable period in my lifetime. 1988 may be close but I was very young.

This is definitely the most extreme weather between the othere comparable extremes IMO.

1988, 1995, and even the July heatwave in 2011 were extreme, but they were all climatologically favored extremes (in the Summer).

The fact that we're seeing an extended period of typical mid-June weather in mid-March blows those extremes out of the water, IMO.
