Hail in Tropical Hawaii, Across the Street from the Beach.

Recommended Posts

Yesterday it hailed here in Hawaii at my house on Oahu, across the street from the beach. The hail was nickel to quarter sized and it fell for a minute or two. I posted a video of it on YouTube. Enjoy!

Nice video, definitely not something you see everyday!

A friend of mine on the island sent me some radar images of a probably tornadic supercell a few miles south of Makapu'u Poinnt that day. Saw some great lightning shots from over the Ala Wai too.

I remember doing radar training a few years ago the WDTB made sure to have soundings from both Alaska and Hawai'i to show us that severe hail can happen anywhere in the U.S.

Actually most anywhere in the World as I've seen hail in the Philippines and know of occurrences of large hail there at low elevation sites (such as the shores of Manila Bay). The Philippines also gets tornadoes and not always waterspout or landspout ones either and the deadliest tornado of modern record occurred in Bangladesh.

I've ready some pretty fascinating studies on Bangladeshi severe weather. How there are dry line features at play with their supercells as well.

Yes, this morning there were extreme thunder storms over Kailua, Oahu, and reports of hail there and on the Big Island (Hawaii Island) from yesterday. We hardly ever get thunder storms here and none of us remember ever seeing hail here, so it was quite the shock to see it falling and especially the size of it too. We're supposed to have unstable weather for the rest of the day too. Oh, there was also a waterspout spotted and videotaped off of Kailua this morning too (actually it was next to Kailua in Laniki). I'll try to find the link to it and post it. - Brian

We loved Kailua too when we went, 4 years ago this week! We kayaked out to the islands next to the tornado, less than a mile from shore. Can't believe the pictures! Looks like the tornado came ashore right where we stayed, too- hope people's houses are OK! Very densely populated area within a couple miles of the beach. Likely the worst was tree damage, as the trees there are not stressed much due to no periodic strong winds (other than trades which would have been opposite to the wind directionwith the tornado yesterday).

That Island I believe is Chinamens Hat, it typically is full of bird guana - so nice vaccum job! Spent a couple years there in the 70s and seems that the Trade winds based on the sounding and radar shots got the usual lift on the Koolau Range and then conditionally unstable popped a super cell with near perfect set up. Most thunderstorms- not many - occurr dead center of the Island when trades are dead andalso in this SE Oahu region and some are pretty fantastic with frequent lightning so not too surprised.

If you're talking about the waterspout picture from icebreakers' post --- that's not Chinamens Hat, but rather one of the two Mokulua Islands. About 8 miles or so south of Chinamens Hat (other side of the Marine Corps Base).

The Mokuluas are great --- they are very easy to kayak to from either Kailua Beach or Lanikai Beach. I did that when I was out there five weeks ago. There was a fair amount of bird guano THERE too, ha ha. (I miss Hawaii, it's awesome there!)

Well, yesterday the sun came out and today it's nice too. I think there is some rain in the forecast but hopefully it won't be as bad as it was last week. Also, yes, those are the Mokulua Islands and in the video of the tornado, it does look like one took a direct hit.

Anyway, on the same day that the hail occurred (which I think was the day before the tornado), I also got video of the tremendous runoff from Makapu'u point. There are not usually waterfalls here. At one point it even appears like it's flowing off the top of the mountain. This just shows the incredible amount of water that we were being inundated with that day (March 6, 2012).

Here's the video:
