Don't count out the two to three week period or so after this torch finally subsides this weekend. Obviosuly high spots and mountains would have the best chance...but a cutoff-y look to it.

Thanks Will, you've made me feel a little better. Bless you. I'll never lose hope, not even in July. If it can be 70 in March it could just as easily snow in July....right?

Everyone is obsessed with the torch and rightfully so, but it only takes one cutoff low. It does not have to be in the middle of a way below pattern.

I wasn't aware this winter had any better days...it pretty much sucked beginning to end here.

Life is what you make it Socks. There was enough snow to sled, ski, x-c, plenty of ice for fishing and skating. I did some sort of winter activity just about everyday with family and friends. Not a great snow year but a fun Winter nonetheless.

Well that's at 1400' or so. Most people further east that normally can do it, just could not. It's not very common to see people in nrn ORH county have no snow and no ice on the ponds in early to mid March. Even for areas up north, unless you were at 3000'...you risked hitting objects in the trails that would normally be covered in snow. Lake Winnipesaukee is virtually ice out right now.

I only went sledding once this winter...we didn't do as well as the Berkshires so we had bare ground much of the winter season. There's no ice left on any of the lakes around here at 1100-1200' in the Monadnocks on 3/20. This was clearly one of the worst winters in history, Pete. You guys got lucky in a few storms and hold snowpack incredibly well...over here it was just brutal.

I've never understood why people would live at lower elevations.

There have been worse, you're just not old enough to remember them.

It has been very strange... it happens, but far from normal.

Too have such a low snow year followed by the biggest torch ever. Normally that early March snow would haveblasted for a while.

Precip in general is hard to come by

Yeah the lack of precip is also what really hurt the snow totals...it will also help affect the temperatures, especially in late winter/early spring. Lack of precip means more sunny days and more of those 50F type high temps even if its cold enough aloft to snow.

I still find it funny that you live in Mass... the rugged wilds of ... Massachusetts?Anyway, which winters do you remember as worse? I know some for where I lived at various times, but how about for the East Slope?

'88-'89 was worse than this I think for ORH area...and prob east slopes too...I'm not including October when comparing even though it counts. 1979-1980 was def worse. 1994-1995 was pretty bad too, but it had a very cold and snow covered february after the only decent storm of the winter on 2/4/95....so it felt more wintry for longer than this winter did. But total snowfall was awful.

Probably not much longer if I play my cards right. 2-3yrs more, I hope. The stretch from the Winter of '88-'89 through '91-'92 (I think) was poor.

Most will acknowledge this, only a couple won't, and you won't change their minds because at 1500+ feet they got snow, or got upsloped and got snow.

Percentage wise I don't think I was far off from norms here, but it was a terrible winter. A freak OES event and some OE can't make up for what was a dreadful winter, no ice to fish or skate on, nothing to sled on most of the year. Just brutal. I am surprised by how many have chimed in from the north country with how bad it was up there, I was under the impression it was all things snow.

Here's to hoping for a much, much better winter 2012.

Pete's the man..but I don't understand why he can't say it. It's not like he's admitting that he has a small weenie or anything. LOL.

This winter was horrible. Good riddance.

I think he's right that there have been worse out here though...not many worse, but defnitely a few. For Boston, probably only 1 winter was worse than this one on record and that is 1936-1937.

It was and I got two decent events but one came when the lawn was still green turning the snow green when we made snowmen, and the second was gone in about 24 hours. I can't begin to pretend this was a good season here. The only ice was in my drinks, there wasn't a pond with a flag on within 75 miles of here I don't think.

On the flip side we'll be on the beach in the coming days.

If you've got to go back to the 30s for all intents and purposes this is the worst winter of anyones lives that's reading this forum.

Not back here.

N CT had the classic "would you take one once in a lifetime storm for a winter with no snow?" That's basically what we had. TBH I'd be fine with no snow next winter as payback for our once-in-a-lifetime October snowstorm.

Yeah I agree, for Boston area it was definitely the worst anyone here has experienced. For out here, '88-'89 was def worse for me and possibly '94-'95....for people old enough, '79-'80 was definitely worse than this one.

The October storm wasn't that great...it was a unique event but it had no staying power. I'm all about wintry atmosphere and wintertime activities, and the 10.29 storm didn't contribute to those at all. I also like cold weather when it is supposed to be cold, and having greater than 5F departures for every month of the winter ruined it for me.

I am almost with you...not quite but close. We ger October snow, but that was amazing. And to have 2 decent October snows, one of which was my biggest snowfall in over 5 yeears. Not sure I could go a year without snow

We have different winter philosophies.

I love snowstorms. I could care less if it lasted on the ground more than a day or two.

I do love winter sports... but for my purposes if I have 0" snow depth and Vermont has 4 feet that's fine with me.

I don't like the cold. Leave it up north.

The only thing I'll say about cold/depth is that if we're approaching extremes (like Jan 94 or Jan 11 for cold and depth, respectively) I'll root for it. Other than that... melt the damn stuff and save me money on heating.

We've had conversations like this before on here and it's interesting that so many people have different aspects of winter and weather that they love. I'd take a Feb 1978 and trade 3 years of snow for it. Other people couldn't do that.

I'd say October 11 I'd trade 2 years of snow... and March 1888 I'd trade 5 years of snow.

Nate, it was the most anomolous event any of us will ever see. It was awesome, if short lived

Yeah there might have been worse..but it's been sh*tty all around. The Dec-Mar period was terrible.

It's all relative. It wasn't a great Winter here but it wasn't as bad as some make it out. While my max snow depth came in October I was able to maintain a snowpack for most of the Winter. I pursued my favorite Winter sports without much trouble. There were at least frequent light snowfalls which helped keep the Winter mood going. Honestly though, we could have a blockbuster Winter and it would still pale in comparison to AK. Despite that fact it would take a truly awful Winter to get me to mope about and complain endlessly. I don't let moss grow under my feet, there is always a way to make a bad situation better. I'm an eternal optimist type. The way I look at it there's a good chance next Winter will be quite a bit better and if it's not well we're one Winter closer to the next epic season. WWA level snow AK style. Barely even noticed another 24+" overnight.lol

I would trade 3 years of snow for Feb 1978 where I lived in Foxboro.Seriously. 1888 the same. October 2011, probably not. Impact here was meh, but the impact for you was incredible, so I understand.I wish I lived here for Dec 1992
