Heading SE towards our area, but the mountains will dry out the snow before these snow areas will reach our area. Just a few clouds at times will result.

Kevin the walrus of Gaithersburg signing off early on this Friday morning. Stay tuned for big changes to my report in the coming days please, if the reports can come at all. My station is going to be closing down over the next week or so. The big changes still will happen during this same time period, but at least they didn't happen on Wednesday. Thanks for your sympathies on giving up Roxy - I continue to get great reports on her from her new foster parents. She is doing so well and getting treated like a queen as she so deserves.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, December 11, 2016

  •

Sunday featured a cold, cloudy day with snow falling nearby but as far as I know nothing fell at my location. Low temps were in the mid 20s once again in the very early AM, but warmed up a bit overnight into the upper 20s by sunrise. During the day the temps only rose into the mid 30s under the cloudy skies inching up late evening into the upper 30s. Since then, during the first few hours of Monday the temperature has actually risen a bit more to just over the 40° mark at 2:15 AM under continued cloudy skies with dew points rising into the lower 30s. Cloudy skies with low temps holding around 40° with a 100 POP for rain before sunrise. Cloudy with an 100 POP for rain on Monday, mostly in the morning, with highs around 50°, just a chance of rain in the afternoon. Partly cloudy to Cloudy later Monday night with lows in the low 30s, then partly cloudy on Tuesday with high temps in the low 40s, Tuesday night cloudy with lows in the low 30s. Partly sunny on Wednesday with highs in the low 40s, then turning colder with clouds Wednesday night with lows in the lower 20s, then on Thursday probably our first sub-freezing maximum temperature of the season under sunny, very brisk skies, highs in the upper 20s. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, December 12, 2016

Monday featured a milder day, cloudy in the morning with some light rain, then slowly clearing out in the afternoon and a clear, relatively mild evening. Low temps were in the upper 30s at the very start of the day but warmed overnight into the low 40s by sunrise and the light rain that fell did not obviously freeze at all, despite a freezing rain advisory that was in place during the early AM hours. Low 50s were reached by the mid afternoon under then partly cloudy skies, falling off into the 40s and upper 30s during the evening hours. Since then, during the first few hours of Tuesday the temperature has fallen off a bit into the mid 30s under clear, full moonlit skies with just a few wisps of cirrus decorating the night sky. Clear to partly cloudy skies with low temps falling into the low 30s by sunrise. Mostly cloudy with a slight chance (20 POP) for rain or snow showers on Tuesday afternoon with highs in the low 40s. Cloudy Tuesday night with lows in the low 30s. Mostly sunny on Wednesday with highs around 40°, then turning colder with clouds Wednesday night with lows in the lower 20s, then on Thursday and Friday easily our coldest day of the season (so far) with our first sub-freezing maximum temperature of the season under sunny, very brisk skies, highs in the mid 20s on Thursday and low 20s on Friday. Lows Thursday night from 10° to 15°. Cloudy on Friday night with lows around 20° and a 50 POP for snow. How much? Not sure yet. Saturday- a 70 POP for a mixture of rain, sleet and freezing rain with highs in the low 40s. The rest of the weekend will be milder, with lows in the upper 30s and highs on Sunday in the low 50s and a 50-60 POP for rain showers. So much for the Friday night snow sticking around for a while...

(My final) Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather report - Thursday, December 15, 2016

This will be my final report from my station here on Goodport Lane. My VP2 station will be taken down for good at this location during the day on Friday. Sorry for the change in plan. I will try and do a modified short report covering Friday-Sunday if I have the time. Thursday featured our coldest day of the season so far, but because we started out in the mid 30s in the first few hours of the day, we didn't technically have a sub-32° max temp day on Thursday, even though the afternoon temps didn't get out of the low-mid 20s. Temps tonight have dropped into the mid teens, with the winds slowly dying off after a very breezy day that led to really low wind chill temps. We had partly to mostly sunny/clear skies during most of the day. During the first few hours of Friday the temperature has stayed in the mid teens, with the likelihood of dropping to around 10°-12° by sunrise. On Friday we will have another cold day, and likely our first statistically sub-32° max temp of the season, with high temps in the upper 20s with lighter winds and cloudy skies. Friday night temps won't drop much under cloudy skies and a near 100 POP for light snow in the evening changing over to mixed precipitation after midnight as temps start to rise in the early morning of Saturday. Saturday- a near 100 POP for a mixture of rain and freezing rain (mostly early) as high temps rise into the lower 50s. Showers and 40s holding Saturday night. Sunday an 80 POP for showers, highs in the mid 50s early but dropping into the lower 40s by the end of the day. Mostly cloudy and colder Sunday night with lows dropping into the low 20s. Monday becoming mostly sunny and colder, with highs in the low 30s. A slowly moderating trend in temperature with varying amounts of cloudiness into the mid week, with temps in the low 40s for highs by Wednesday. Lows mostly in the 20s.

For the next few hours, probably going offline late Friday morning, the weather underground link to my station data is:

Closing down of my Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 weather station - Friday, December 16, 2016

My station was taken down as I described last night at about 1400 on Friday, going offline for good unfortunately. It was a cold, cloudy day with temps staying below the freezing mark for the first time this season. Sometime overnight precipitation will commence as snow, sleet, freezing rain and then eventually later on Saturday change over to rain as temperatures climb into the 40s. It looks like a wet weekend for the better part of the time, getting colder again on Sunday later in the day as the weekend draws to a close. Sunny and seasonable temps for the beginning of the new week with high temps in the 30s and lows in the mid 20s.

Kevin the walrus of Gaithersburg signing off early on this Saturday morning. A sad day indeed. The end of an era. Hopefully a new one will be born soon. Kind of disappointed at the lack of response from most of you out there. I will be moving to a new apartment in West Rockville at the Gardens of Traville just off route 28 and Shady Grove Road on Monday. Got a lot to do over the weekend, so this may be my last post for a few days till I open up a new chapter in my life from my new location. It has been a great run from me.  Any questions/comments please let me know. It has been quite a run - over 38 years of observations at my Goodport Lane location in Gaithersburg.
