Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 weather station report for Sunday, October 30, 2016

Sunday was partly sunny/clear early and mild, then in the afternoon clouds took over eventually along with the heat, as high temps reached just over the 80° mark. Late in the afternoon and early evening a brief shower came through, along with a dramatic increase in the winds around 1730-1800 with a PWG of 23 MPH at 1747, third highest gust all month. Clearing later in the evening, and a slow decline in the temperature. Early on Monday morning at 3:45 AM my temperature is in the mid 50s with dew point temps in the mid 40s under clear skies.  Minimum temperatures should only drop a bit more at most into the low 50s by sunrise under clear skies.  Mostly sunny on Monday with cooler high temperatures in the upper 50s with lows in the low 40s, then partly to mostly cloudy on Tuesday with highs in the low 60s, lows in the upper 40s. Wednesday and Thursday we should be back up in the low-mid 70s under partly to mostly sunny skies, lows mostly in the 50s, with a 40 POP for showers on Thursday. Mostly sunny with temps falling back down in the low 60s on Friday and Saturday with lows in the low-mid 40s as we pass Halloween and enter November this coming week, with temperatures riding a bit of the roller coaster ups and downs typical of the fall season we are currently in.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Halloween Monday,October 31, 2016

Halloween Monday was mostly sunny and much cooler than yesterday, finishing out the month of October with more seasonable conditions as temperatures fell most of the day. I want to point out, courtesy of an email from John W, that my peak wind gust listed in my statistics for yesterday was in error. In my text part I had it correct. The peak wind gust yesterday should have read "Peak wind gust 23 WSW (1747)" Thanks John! That was indeed the 3rd highest PWG of the month, so definitely notable to make clear mention of. Early on Tuesday morning at 3:30 AM my temperature is just under the 40° mark with dew point temps in the upper mid 30s under clear skies. Minimum temperatures should only drop a bit more at most into the upper 30s by sunrise under clear skies. Partly cloudy on Tuesday with highs around 60°, lows in the upper 40s with cloudy to partly cloudy skies. Wednesday and Thursday we should be back up in the mid 70s under partly to mostly sunny skies, lows in the mid 50s Wednesday and mid 40s on Thursday, with a 50 POP for showers on Thursday. Mostly sunny with temps falling back down in the upper 50s to around 60° on Friday and Saturday with lows in the low-mid 40s as we enter November this coming week, with temperatures continuing to ride a bit of a roller coaster up and down typical of the fall season we are currently in.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, November 2, 2016

  •

Wednesday warmed up once again under mostly sunny skies, with the early AM low around 50° and the afternoon high temperatures in the mid 70s. I continue to work on my October data statistics, as the month was a remarkably dry and warm one, only my second such month in my 38 year period of record (POR) with that combination. It was the second driest and third warmest in my POR. Anyway, as usual I am digressing a bit here with more details on the month of October coming in the next several days. Early on Thursday morning at 3:30 AM my temperature is in the mid 50s with dew point temps also in the mid 50s under partly cloudy skies with patchy dense fog around the area. Minimum temperatures should hold in the mid 50s till sunrise under continued partly cloudy skies with possible fog. On Thursday, temps will be well up in the 70s once again, with partly to mostly cloudy skies and with a 50 POP for showers and even possibly a thundershower in the afternoon and a 40 POP in the evening with lows dropping into the upper 40s under partly cloudy skies later on after the showers move off. Mostly sunny with high temps falling into the upper 50s on Friday, lows in the upper 30s, with low 60s for highs and low-mid 40s for lows on Saturday and upper 30s on Sunday under continued sunny/clear skies and breezy conditions at times, winds gusting to 30 MPH at times in more exposed locations (my backyard is not one of those exposed locations).

Sunday stayed sunny with seasonable (low 40s for lows, mid 60s for highs) temperatures (no frost - temps rose late last night and kept us from getting frosty or even getting into the 30s). Clear skies have remained and temperatures have dropped early on Monday morning around 3:45 AM EST into the upper 30s with dew point temps down to 32°. Remember from now on, all times in my reports refer to Eastern Standard Time. Mostly to partly sunny with high temps in the upper 50s-mid 60s on Monday through much of the upcoming week, with lows in the upper 30s or lower 40s except upper 40s on Tuesday night with cloudy but dry skies. Next weekend it looks like a bit cooler temps, with highs in the low 50s and lows in the mid 30s. It should remain dry all of the upcoming week through the Veteran's Day weekend.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, November 13, 2016

  •

Sunday was a recovery day for me from the long day on Saturday with the weather party and then trying to get caught up with my usual stuff before going to bed last night. I rested and watched football most of the day, and now I am running late again tonight. The day started out cold, coldest day of the season so far with a low temperature in the upper 20s and a good frost/freeze finally. Temperatures rebounded under lighter winds in the afternoon and hit the 60° mark for a daily max temperature in the mid-afternoon under bright, sunny skies. Our best night to view the Supermoon Sunday night under clear skies with a bit of a halo around the moon with moisture streaming in from the upper levels of the atmosphere for our Monday rain. Monday will probably afford no chance to view the actual most intense night for the Supermoon unfortunately, though we do need the rain. Early on this Monday morning, temps have fallen below freezing once again to around 30° with dew point temps in the upper mid-20s. The rest of the overnight should feature clear skies with lows holding around 30° under clear, calm, supermoon lit conditions. Monday should be sunny in the morning with clouds increasing in the afternoon with high temps in the mid 50s and a slight chance at rain (20 POP) then on Monday evening a 70 POP for likely rain, lows in the lower 40s, staying cloudy overnight. Tuesday through Thursday should find mostly sunny/clear skies with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s and lows around 40° to the lower 40s. Most of this week's weather is a continued rather tranquil pattern for this time of year, to say the least.

Radar is essentially clear throughout the Eastern U.S. north of Florida, except for a bit of rain in Eastern North Carolina, from a new, developing coastal storm system that is hopefully going to bring us some needed rain on Monday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, November 14, 2016

  •

Monday was clear overnight which allowed the temperature to drop down into the upper 20s, but clouds overspread the region in the daylight morning hours, coming up from the south from a small weak area of LOW pressure offshore from North Carolina. Dry air inhibited rain development almost all day, with dew points remaining in the 20s into the evening. Rain was falling aloft over much of Maryland a good part of the PM hours, but at my house only a trace amount of rain fell, starting just before midnight as best I could determine (no data from my VP2 gauge - normal with trace amounts) Temperatures during the day reached the upper 50s, falling into the upper 40s during the evening hours. . Early on this Tuesday morning, temps have held in the mid 40s, with the dew point temps finally rising to the 40° mark. Cloudy skies and occasional very light rain or sprinkles is all that has fallen so far as best I know (still calling for rain likely, at a 70 POP). The rest of the overnight should feature cloudy skies with lows holding above 40° under cloudy, slightly damp conditions, very effectively hiding the Supermoon all night. Tuesday through Thursday should find mostly sunny/clear skies with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s and lows around 40° to the lower 40s. Warming up a bit on Friday, highs in the mid 60s, lows in the mid 40s under sunny skies. Much of this week's weather is a continuation of a rather tranquil pattern for this time of year, to put it mildly.

Other data for Monday as follows:
High temp 58.3° (1304)
Low temp 28.7° (0705)
Obs temp 47.2°
Peak wind gust 6 W (1316)
Relative Humidity ranged from a max of 92% (0856) to a low of 28% (1237)
Dew point temperatures ranged from 38° to 25°
Barometric pressure values ranged from 30.18" (0000) to 30.01" (2339)

At midnight obs - Cloudy/very light rain, temperature 47.2°, Winds Calm, Pressure at 30.01" and falling, relative humidity 70%, dew point of 38°.

Current observations at 0339 EST - Cloudy/very light rain occasionally falling, temperature 46.1°, winds Calm, barometric pressure at 29.98" and falling, relative humidity 82%, dew point 41°.

Radar is showing scattered areas of light rain in central Maryland and adjacent areas which may or may not be falling all the way to the ground. Very light amounts unfortunately - we need the rain. Larger area of rain offshore of New Jersey, falling harmlessly without much benefit to the parched soil into the Atlantic Ocean.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, November 15, 2016

  •

Tuesday was cloudy overnight with occasional light sprinkles that certainly didn't amount to much. Nothing accumulated in my VP2 rain gauge for the second straight day, and barely any moisture in my cocorahs gauge. Air was just too dry and it took just about all the precipitation energy to fill the column enough to generate the occasional sprinkles. Temperatures stayed mild overnight and into a good part of the day, in the upper 40s at first up to the low 60s by mid-afternoon. Early on this Wednesday morning, temps have dropped under clear skies into the mid 30s around 3:30 AM. with the dew point temps dropping into the low 30s. Clear skies and temps in the 30s expected for the remaining hours of the overnight till sunrise. Wednesday through Thursday should find mostly sunny/clear skies with highs in the low 60s and lows around 40° to the lower 40s. Warming up a bit on Friday, highs in the upper 60s, lows in the mid 40s under sunny/clear skies. Mostly sunny on Saturday, highs in the mid 60s, with a 30 POP for showers at times, probably in the afternoon towards evening. From this point, it appears that a cooler pattern will be taking over, with a bit of snow in the forecast for Saturday night (just wet snow showers, probably won't accumulate much if at all.) Cloudy Saturday night, a 50 POP for rain or snow showers, lows in the mid 30s. Becoming partly sunny and chilly on Sunday, with highs in the mid 40s, lows in the low 30s. More sun and mid 40s for Monday, lows in the low 30s as we head into Thanksgiving week.

Thanksgiving Thursday looks to be partly cloudy, high temps in the mid 50s, with a continued 40 POP for showers. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, November 23, 2016

  •

Wednesday was a clear/sunny day in the AM with our coldest min of the season so far (26.1°) and coldest min since March 3. Still sunny in the early PM when we reached the high temp for the day in the low 50s then clouds started to stream in from the west from the next system coming to pay us a visit. The wind was really calm today compared with the past few days, only topping out at 6 MPH and at a different direction (ENE) slowly bringing in the moisture though we didn't get any rain the rest of the day, but was noted on radar in some parts of the region. Early on this Thanksgiving Thursday morning, temps have not dropped much under the continued cloudy, only just barely in the upper 30s around 3:15 AM. with the dew point temps rising into the low 30s. Cloudy skies will hold the temps in the upper 30s till sunrise. Radar showing most if not all of the precip falling in parts of OH, PA and WV and moving ENE, which will result in it missing our immediate area to the north, staying mostly in PA as I see it. There technically is a 30 POP for showers, but I think they are rather unlikely to fall in my backyard. Thanksgiving Thursday looks to be mostly cloudy, high temps in the low 50s, with a 60 POP for showers in the morning. Mostly cloudy with lows in the upper 30s Thursday night. Black Friday looks to be mostly cloudy with high temps in the mid 50s with a 30 POP for rain, lows at night in the upper 30s under mostly cloudy skies early but turning partly cloudy overnight. The weekend looks to be mostly sunny with high temps around 50° to the low 50s, lows in the low-mid 30s.

At midnight obs - Cloudy, temperature 42.8°, Winds Calm, Pressure at 30.28" and falling, relative humidity 58%, dew point of 29°.

Current observations at 0341 EST - Cloudy, temperature 40.0°, winds Calm, barometric pressure at 30.24" and falling, relative humidity 79%, dew point 34°.

Radar is showing rain over much of western PA and eastern OH and parts of northern WV, along with snow/mixed precipitation further to the NE over upstate NY and parts of southern and central New England at this time. Precipitation is moving ENE so will miss our area to the north for the most part, if not entirely.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, November 25, 2016

  •

Black Friday was a mostly cloudy day and mild. There were no sprinkles or light rain falling that I know of, after studying my neighboring observers data in cocorahs and getting feedback from the neighbors I have added a trace of precipitation for yesterday's records and will revise my cocorahs record tonight to reflect this. Temps once again ranged from the upper 30s to the mid 50s in the afternoon. The wind was quite tranquil again today. Early on this Saturday morning, temps have not dropped much under partly cloudy skies, only in the lower 40s around 3:30 AM. with the dew point temps in the upper 30s. Mostly Cloudy skies with temps dropping little, perhaps around 40° at best till sunrise. The weekend looks to be partly to mostly sunny with high temps around 50° to the low 50s, lows in the low-mid 30s. After a partly cloudy day on Monday with highs in the low or mid 50s, Tuesday and Wednesday look to be rainy/showery - we need the rain badly - to close out this very dry month of November atypically with wet weather that should temper the record setting dry totals for the month.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, November 26, 2016

  •

Saturday was a variably cloudy day, colder and quite breezy at times during the day. Winds have calmed down in the overnight now and it is a less cloudy but a bit damp out there now - I actually can see my breath out in my backyard. Early on this Sunday morning, temps have dropped to just above the freezing mark under partly cloudy skies around 3 AM with the dew point temps in the upper 20s. Partly Cloudy skies with temps dropping to the freezing mark by sunrise. Sunday looks to be sunny with high temps around 50°, lows in the low 30s. After a partly cloudy day on Monday with highs in the low 50s, Tuesday and Wednesday look to be showery - we need the rain badly - 70 POP during the day, 50 POP at night, with highs in the mid 60s and lows in the 40s. Thursday should cool off into the upper 50s for highs and 30s for lows, still a 40 POP for showers but ending sometime during the day as we enter the new month of December. So we should be closing out this very dry month of November atypically with wet weather that should temper the record-setting dry totals for the month.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, November 27 , 2016

  •

Sunday was a partly cloudy day, a tad warmer in the afternoon but frosty in the early AM - also less windy than Saturday. Early on this Monday morning, temps have dropped to just under the freezing mark under partly cloudy skies around 1:30 AM with the dew point temps in the upper 20s. Clear to partly Cloudy skies with temps dropping into the mid-upper 20s by sunrise. After a partly to mostly cloudy day on Monday with highs in the low 50s, Monday night into Tuesday and Wednesday look to be rainy/showery - we need the rain badly - 70-80 POP during the days and Monday and Wednesday night, 30 POP on Tuesday night, with highs in the mid 60s and lows in the 40s - low 50s. Thursday should cool off into the upper 50s for highs and 30s for lows, with sunny to partly sunny skies and an end to the rain as we enter the new month of December. Sunny on Friday with highs around 50°, lows in the mid 30s. So we should be closing out this very dry month of November atypically with wet weather that should temper the record-setting dry totals for the month.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, November 29 2016

  •

Tuesday was a cloudy, mild day with occasional rain most of the day, no rain evident in the evening, but dense fog developed as air temperature met up with the dew point temperature at about the 55° level. Early on this Wednesday morning, temps have stayed mild, in the mid-50s, under cloudy skies obscured by dense fog around 2:30 AM with the dew point temps in the mid 50s. Dense fog and temps holding in the mid 50s should dominate the scene the rest of the overnight till sunrise. A dense fog advisory has been issued by NWS effective currently and expiring at 7 AM. Wednesday should start out with dense fog, with showers developing, possibly a thundershower in the afternoon and warm, with high temps in the upper 60s and a near 100 POP for the rain falling , a near 100 POP of rain showers and isolated thundershowers continuing through Wednesday evening before midnight, then partly cloudy after midnight with low temps dropping into the upper 40s. Thursday should cool off into the mid 50s for highs and mid 30s for lows, with mostly sunny/clear skies and an end to the rain as we enter the new month of December. Sunny on Friday with highs in the upper 40s, lows in the mid 30s. So we are closing out what had been looking like a record dry month of November atypically with wet weather that will result in no extreme records for November dryness.
