Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, October 1, 2016

  •

Saturday was cloudy and cool once again with occasional light rain (mostly in the morning) with drizzle/mist at times also. I had to get up early (6 AM) so I could set up my rain gauge by 7 AM at the Taste of Bethesda all day. Insurance pays for losses if documented rainfall occurs to prove it. Only got 0.08" at the festival all day - they had a pretty good crowd and the weather most of the time was not bad and it never rained any more than lightly. I had more rain at home as shown below. We stayed in the low 60s at home all day with only a 3° spread (63°-60°) all day while dew point temps ranged similarly. Temperatures early this Sunday morning around 4:00 AM are in the low 60s with dew points also in the low 60s so with just about saturation occurring fog has broken out in the area in favorable fog locations. It is still misting/drizzling at times with this continued easterly flow. Minimum temperatures look to maybe drop to around 60° or possibly the upper 50s under continued cloudy/drizzly/foggy (20 POP) skies till sunrise in a few hours along with dew point temperatures holding around 60°. Mostly cloudy on Sunday with patchy drizzle and areas of fog, particularly in the morning hours, with lessening chances in the afternoon with highs in the low 70s. Mostly cloudy Sunday night early but partly cloudy later with lows in the mid 50s and still a 20 POP for an isolated shower early but hopefully an end to the rain, then finally on Monday and Tuesday mostly sunny with highs in the low 70s, lows in the upper 50s. I wound up with 2.90" of rain for the month of September, 1.30" below normal. Also wound up with the warmest September mean temperature (71.9°) ever (38 year period of record) and the warmest September average minimum temperature (63.4°). The average September max temperature of 80.4° was not a record, but tied with 2010 as the 5th warmest ever. More statistics will be forthcoming over the next several days.

Sunday was cloudy and cool with a bit of spotty drizzle in the early AM, but by mid-morning we broke out into at least partial sun, and by the afternoon pretty much full sun. This evening we have some spotty fog around and isolated bands or areas of showers have developed in the region late this evening (only a 20 POP in the forecast). We rose into the low 70s by the afternoon while dew point temps remained in the low-mid 60s. Temperatures early this Monday morning around 4:00 AM are in the low 60s with dew points around 60°. Monday and Tuesday it should be mostly sunny with highs in the low 70s, lows in the mid 50s. Hurricane Matthew could be a player in our forecast in the future, but not till next weekend if at all. Much too early to predict its exact track.

Temperatures early this Wednesday morning around 4:15 AM are in the mid 50s with dew points around the same value once again. I see a few light shower activity entering WI from Iowa at this time, and I saw a report earlier that snow has been falling through parts of Iowa over the past several hours. Also noted a few showers moving north out of Florida towards the Carolina coast area, mostly offshore. This activity is not related to Hurricane Matthew as far as I know.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, October 8, 2016

  •

Saturday was a mostly cloudy, cool day with little range in the high and low temperature. From early AM with 63.0° we only rose up to 66.2° by mid afternoon. Clouds from the outermost/northernmost bands from Hurricane Matthew were the culprit, with the rain bands from the storm lying to my SE all day over southern Maryland and points further south over VA and NC and barely getting up here with a small renegade shower at some point during the day that only gave me 0.06" for the day. Dew point temps remained in the low to mid 60s. Temperatures early this Sunday morning around 5 AM have dropped into the upper mid-50s with dew point temps around 50° under still cloudy skies with at times brisk northerly component winds. Minimum temperatures may drop into the mid 50s along with the dew point temperatures in the upper 40s under mostly cloudy skies with the brisk N winds continuing and a 20 POP for rain. Sunday will be cloudy early with high temps in the low 60s under brisk northerly winds and a 20 POP for rain in the morning, then clearing skies in the afternoon and evening. Mostly sunny skies through most of the coming week, with highs of around 60° on Monday rising slowly up to around 70° by Thursday with lows mostly in the 40s to low 50s by later in the week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, October 9, 2016

  •

Sunday was cloudy very early, but generally was mostly clear/sunny for most of the day, with good winds and temperatures from the mid 60s to the mid 50s. The winds peaked out at 25 MPH in the early morning hours, the windiest value since 26 MPH was recorded back on April 5. And now early on Monday October 10 I am down in the 40s, which is the first time I have been in the 40s since back on May 20 when I had 47.5°. Temperatures early this Monday morning around 3:45 AM have dropped into the upper 40s with dew point temps down in the low 40s under clear skies and dying winds. Minimum temperatures should drop into the mid 40s along with dew point temperatures in the upper 30s possibly under clear skies. Partly to mostly sunny skies through most of the coming week, with highs in the low 60s early in the week rising to the upper 60s by Thursday, cooling off again into the low 60s on Friday and Saturday. Lows in the upper 30s Monday night rising to the upper 40s to low 50s by the end of the week. Perhaps a bit of cloudiness at the end of the week, but for right now no appreciable rainfall looks likely.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Columbus Day Monday, October 10, 2016

  •

Monday was mostly sunny and cooler, coolest day of the season so far, with winds slowly abating. I made a remark about yesterday's winds in my previous report, saying that the daily PWG was 25 MPH reached in the early morning hours. Actually the 25 MPH PWG was reached in the afternoon at 1603. I had reached a 24 MPH gust in the early morning hours actually. Thanks to John W for letting me know about that. And now to recap records set on October 10, I wanted to mention my earliest measurable snowfall I ever recorded at my location was 2.0 inches on October 10, 1979. Early on Tuesday morning as of 3:30 AM my temperature is now down in the low 40s with dew point temps down in the upper 30s under clear skies and light winds. Minimum temperatures should drop into the upper 30s along with dew point temperatures in the mid 30s under clear skies with patchy frost possible. Partly to mostly sunny skies through most of the coming week, with highs in the mid 60s on Tuesday warming to the low 70s by Thursday, cooling off again into the low 60s on Friday and Saturday but with no rain, just a bit of clouds later in the week, mostly overnight when the front looks to pass on through. Lows in the upper 30s Monday night rising to the upper 40s to low 50s by the end of the week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, October 11, 2016

Tuesday was clear/sunny and seasonably cool in the afternoon, and relatively cold in the early AM hours as our coldest temperature of the season so far was recorded as 38.4° just after sunrise. Since I am not up at that time, I don't know if I had any frost. It is possible that I did have some, as others I know in the area with slightly lower temps had some, but I am not sure. Winds have become light, which allows for good radiational cooling at night under the clear, starlit sky. Early on Wednesday morning as of 3:00 AM my temperature is down in the mid 40s with dew point temps in the low 40s under clear skies and light winds. Minimum temperatures might drop into the low 40s by sunrise with a slight drop in the dew point temperature possible. Patchy frost is not likely tonight in the immediate area. Partly to mostly sunny skies through most of the coming week and weekend, with highs in the upper 60s on Wednesday warming to the low 70s on Thursday, cooling off again into the low 60s on Friday and Saturday but with no rain. Lows in the low 40s Tuesday night rising to the upper 40s to low 50s on Thursday, then dropping off to the low-mid 40s by Friday and over the first part of the weekend before a warming pattern starts to set up on Sunday and into the coming new week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, October 12, 2016

Wednesday was partly cloudy but with plenty of sun that gave us a slightly milder day over Tuesday. No frost today as the minimum temperature held above the 40° mark early this AM. Temperatures rose up to the mid 60s in the afternoon. Early on Thursday morning as of 1:30 AM my temperature has just gone down below the 50° mark with dew point temps in the upper 40s under partly cloudy skies and light winds. Minimum temperatures won't drop much more than the upper 40s by sunrise with a slight drop in the dew point temperature into the mid 40s possible. Partly to mostly sunny skies on Thursday with highs in the upper 60s and a 20 POP for an isolated shower during the afternoon. We should be cooling off again into the low 60s on Friday then a gradual warmup over the weekend and into next week (up to the upper 70s by Tuesday) but with no further rain chances except for a 30 POP for showers possibly on Saturday night. Lows in upper 40s to low 50s on Thursday, then dropping off to the low-mid 40s by Friday and over the first part of the weekend before the warming trend sets up thereafter with lows in the 50s early next week. It looks like no more "frost on the pumpkin" chances for our area for the foreseeable future.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday October 13, 2016

Thursday was partly to mostly cloudy with a bit of sun at times which all told gave us a slightly milder day than Wednesday. Temperatures rose up to the upper 60s in the afternoon after early morning lows in the upper mid-40s. Early on Friday morning as of 4:00 AM my temperature is in the upper mid-40s with dew point temps in the lower 40s under clear skies and light winds. Minimum temperatures won't drop much more than the mid 40s by sunrise with a slight drop in the dew point temperature possibly. We should be cooling off with highs only in the low 60s on Friday under sunny skies then a gradual warmup over the weekend and into next week (up to the upper 70s by Tuesday and Wednesday) but with no further rain chances. Lows dropping off to the low 40s by Friday then lows warming up to lows around 60° by Tuesday and Wednesday. There should be a gradual cooling off period after that, with increased rain chances finally at the end of the week with the cooler temperatures. Kevin the walrus of Gaithersburg signing off early on Thursday morning. I am having problems with my electric bill (PEPCO) and I may lose electric service in the next few days, possibly not till early next week (at least I am hoping at least as much). If I do lose electric service, my daily wx post may go on a brief hiatus, or in a shortened version as I may only have email access through my phone. And my weather station may not be operating in full mode, with only precipitation data completely reliable. Stay tuned for updates on this if I can make them,  and understand if you don't hear from me soon or in an abbreviated form the electric service is the reason why.

Thursday was a partly sunny day and not quite as warm as yesterday, but still over the 80° mark but not a daily max record, but definitely a record high min record with my early AM min of 65.6°. Early on Friday morning as of 3:45 AM my temperature is just under the 70° mark with dew point temps in the mid 60s under cloudy skies with a bit of wind out there again tonight. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, October 21, 2016

  •

Friday was a mostly cloudy day and not as warm as yesterday, and later in the day a lot cooler than yesterday. No records set today. We had a cold front come through in the early afternoon, with brief showers of moderate to heavy intensity (6.94" max rain rate according to the VP2, recorded at 1332) then a rapid drop of temperature and rise in the wind speed and change in the wind direction. Early on Saturday morning as of 3:15 AM my temperature is in the low 50s with dew point temps in the mid 40s under mostly cloudy skies and spotty drizzle with some gusty winds at times. Minimum temperatures will only drop a bit more, no lower than the upper 40s by sunrise with dew point temperatures holding in the mid 40s, perhaps low 40s possibly with breezes keeping up overnight. Partly sunny on Saturday with a 40 POP for light showers with high temps in the upper 50s and winds gusting up to 40 MPH (at other more exposed spots, not at my protected location). Sunday should be mostly sunny and a tad milder, with highs in the mid 60s and breezes lessening a bit but still around - maybe 25 MPH tops. Overnight lows under clear skies in the low 40s on Saturday and low 50s on Sunday. Monday should be sunny with highs once again in the mid 60s, then sunny on Tuesday and Wednesday, cooler with highs in the upper 50s and lows in the upper 30s on Tuesday and mid 40s on Wednesday.

My data can also be found at: http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman

Friday precipitation: 0.26" (LR) 0.32" (VP2) 6.94" max rain rate @ 1332
October total precipitation: 0.72"
2016 YTD precipitation: 34.84"

Other data for Friday as follows:
High temp 75.1° (1234)
Low temp 55.7° (2353)
Obs temp 55.7°
Peak wind gust 17 E (2315)
Relative Humidity ranged from a max of 95% (1525) to a low of 73% (1222)
Dew point temperatures ranged from 67° to 50° (Turned A/C off earlier tonight)
Barometric pressure values ranged from 29.89" (0000) to 29.60" (1519)

At midnight obs - Mostly Cloudy, temperature 55.7°, Winds 11 WSW, Pressure at 29.63" and steady, relative humidity 81%, dew point of 50°.

Current observations at 0416 EDT - Mostly Cloudy , temperature 51.2°, winds 12 N, barometric pressure at 29.64" and steady, relative humidity 81%, dew point 46°. PWG 21 MPH from the NNW @ 0251 since midnight.

Radar is showing scattered very light rain showers in the mountains of PA, Western NY, and WV, possibly snow showers but not sure on that. Also some in Ohio coming right off Lake Erie. During the day on Friday the highest elevations of the Great Smoky Mtns of TN and NC had measurable snow in snow squalls with lots of wind. Temps dropped to freezing or a bit below. Winter is on its way! Also right now rain showers, moving S to N can be found over most of Maine right now- and I checked Mt Washington an hour or so ago and they were still in the 40s there with rain showers and lighter winds than you might have thought, but over the weekend they will be getting back into winter with measurable snow on Sunday (forecasts I saw said 4-6 inches possible) and winds getting over 100 MPH in gusts.

Sunrise: 0726 (EDT) Sunset 1821 (EDT) Moonphase: Last Quarter

Kevin the walrus of Gaithersburg signing off early on Saturday morning. I am somewhat happier tonight as the electric bill (PEPCO) has been resolved for the time being, and I won't be losing power anytime in the foreseeable future. It is a bit disheartening that precious few people responded at all to my dire news earlier this week about this problem. I think it may show that readership of this post is less than I think, and those that did glossed over it mostly. Perhaps no one knows what to say. I don't know. But I said I would update you on this item, and I have done so for now.

This report is very delayed due to computer problems that didn't allow me to send it out from my desktop Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning. Wednesday was mostly sunny most of the day but with clouds increasing this evening as a frontal system approaches our area from the N and W. We probably will just get clouds from it overnight and through Thursday morning. We had a frosty morning on Wednesday early AM, but failed to actually reach the freezing mark. We were cooler in the afternoon compared with Tuesday with high temps in the mid 50s. Early on Thursday morning at 3:45 AM my temperature is in the upper 40s with dew point temps around 40° under mostly cloudy skies. Mostly cloudy on Thursday with highs in the low 60s and a 50 POP for scattered showers, most likely in the afternoon. Thursday night there is a 60 POP for showers in the evening and still cloudy, but turning partly cloudy late with lows in the mid 40s. Friday should be mostly sunny once again with high temps in the upper 50s, lows in the mid 40s. Mostly sunny on Monday with cooler high temperatures in the upper 50s with lows in the mid 40s, then partly cloudy on Tuesday with highs in the low 60s, lows around 50°.
