Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, August 12, 2016 Friday was mostly sunny early in the day, hot and very humid, but became partly cloudy in the afternoon as I just missed a shower to my south in the mid-afternoon. Then around 5 PM I got a spike in my dew point (up to 82.2° to be more precise about it, according to my VP2 datalogger), raising it from the upper 70s into the low 80s, which held at 80° or more for over an hour. Temperatures were headed for the mid 90s again but the cloudiness tempered that and temps were around 90° when I hit the dew point spike. My max heat index temperature was 112° recorded at 1714. Dew points remained high all day, ranging from the mid 70s to the low 80s. I could only find one other instance of dew point temps at or above 80° over the past 3 1/2 years. I reached a dew point temp of 81° on July 18, 2013. My daily AM min was in the muggy upper 70s, setting a new daily high min record, which I actually have done now the past 3 days. Temperatures early this Saturday morning once again have not dropped much, still around the 80° mark around 3:00 AM under partly cloudy skies. Minimum temperatures will only drop into the mid 70s by sunrise in a few hours with the dew point temperature holding in the mid 70s. There is an excessive heat warning out for the area from 10 AM Saturday through to 8 PM Saturday. Saturday should be partly cloudy, hot and humid with highs in the mid 90s with a 20 POP for isolated showers/storms during the day and carrying into Saturday evening. Lows Saturday and Sunday night in the mid 70s. On Sunday, it will be partly sunny, hot and humid with high temps in the low 90s and a 40 POP for showers/storms at times, lowering to a 30 POP on Sunday evening. Partly cloudy and still humid at the beginning of the new workweek, but cooling off slightly with highs in the upper 80s, lows in the lower 70s with a 50 POP for showers/storms on Tuesday and a 40 POP for showers/storms on both Wednesday and Thursday. We may have high temps on Thursday only in the mid 80s but I will believe it when I see it. Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, August 13, 2016 Saturday was partly to mostly sunny, hot and very humid, tying 2002 with a daily max temp record, and setting a new daily high min temp record. Courtesy of my friend Rick H, I found that I didn't quite miss that shower yesterday as there actually was 0.02" in my dirty gauge that I failed to see yesterday. My records below reflect this small amount, which this month so far turns out as my only measurable rainfall for the month. Dew point temperatures were once again very sultry today, as I once again hit the 80° mark with the low value for the day a still too high 75°. My daily AM min was in the muggy upper 70s, once again setting a new daily high min record, which I actually have done now the past 4 days. I recorded a high heat index temp value of 118° at 1625, Temperatures early this Sunday morning once again have not dropped much, still above the 80° mark around 3:30 AM under clear skies. Minimum temperatures will only drop into the upper 70s by sunrise in a few hours with the dew point temperature holding in the mid 70s. There is an excessive heat warning out for the area from Noon Sunday through 8 PM Sunday. On Sunday, it will be mostly to partly sunny, hot and humid with high temps in the mid 90s and a 50 POP for showers/storms at times, lowering to a 30 POP on Sunday evening with lows in the mid 70s. Partly cloudy but still hot and humid at the beginning of the new workweek, with highs in the low 90s on Monday and Tuesday, with increasing chances for showers/storms, 30 POP during the day on Monday, a 40 POP Monday evening and a 50 POP all day Tuesday as a weak front tries to push through the area. Mostly sunny on Wednesday with high temps around 90°, lows nightly from Wednesday through Friday in the low 70s. Thursday and Friday should be partly to mostly sunny with high temps in the upper 80s. Radar is showing rain showers over parts of New England, particularly in Maine and adjoining New Brunswick and over Eastern Massachusetts, along with scattered showers and possibly some storms over southern IL, SE Missouri, encroaching into a bit of Indiana and Ohioa at this time. All activity appears to be moving E-NE, not heading this way unfortunately any time real soon. My radar doesn't extend into the deep south, so not sure how much action there is in the flooded areas of LA and MS right now, along with no coverage in Florida and other areas of the deep south. Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday,August 14, 2016 Sunday was partly to mostly cloudy (evening), hot and very humid, setting once again a new daily high min temp record but registered right before midnight as our light thunderstorm (drove to a restaurant in Germantown while the storm was hitting - hit there (just to my north) a lot harder with higher winds and brief downpours) cooled us off into the 70s in the evening. I noticed a significant brief rise in my peak wind speed during the storm, and also about a 0.08" pressure rise just ahead and during the storm over a half hour period (approx 1930 to 2000) Dew point temperatures were once again sultry today, but at least I didn't reach the 80° mark (but only barely with a 79° max). My max temp of 97° just missed setting a record (98° in 1988 and 2002) My AM min was 77.6° but was surpassed late in the evening after our light thundershower as discussed earlier. Temperatures early this Monday morning around 3:30 AM have dropped off into the upper low 70s, at least a bit cooler than last night's 80° temps at this time last night. Minimum temperatures will drop into the low 70s by sunrise in a few hours with the dew point temperature holding in the low 70s. Partly cloudy but still hot and humid at the beginning of the new workweek, with highs in the low 90s on Monday and Wednesday and mid 90s on Tuesday, with a 30 POP all 3 days, a 40 POP Monday and Wednesday evening and a 30 POP Tuesday evening with lows in the low-mid 70s as a weak front tries to push through the area. Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, August 15, 2016 Monday was partly to mostly cloudy (evening), hot and very humid, no temperature records set, but a decent thunderstorm for once yielded over an inch of rain (1.31") and set a new daily precipitation record, easily surpassing the old record of 0.75" set back in 1981. Once again the storm cooled us off down into the low-mid 70s during the evening. Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, August 21, 2016 Sunday was mostly cloudy, warm and humid most of the day. Temps rose through the 70s in the early AM and hit the mid 80s by mid-afternoon, just prior to the first of two rounds of light showers that fell today. Despite the warnings of heavy rain and wind with the frontal passage during the afternoon, my location only had light rain and winds. Other places in the region did receive heavier amounts of rain I believe, but I have not seen any specific reports for rainfall amounts or PWG. The dew point temperature ranged from the mid 70s in the afternoon to the mid 60s by late evening. My min temp for the day of 70.3° was reached just before midnight tonight. Clouds dominated the skies through the early evening hours, then cleared out the rest of the day. Temperatures early this Monday morning around 2:30 AM are in the mid 60s while dew point temperatures have dropped into the low 60s - pleasant out there under clear skies. Minimum temperatures should drop to the low to mid 60s by sunrise in a few hours with the dew point temperature dropping into the upper 50s most likely as our significant cold front has passed through the area and is east of the Metro region now, along with the associated showers and storms. It should stay clear the rest of the night. Monday should start off a week with mostly sunny skies, less humid and more pleasant temperatures with highs in the low 80s on both Monday and Tuesday, lows in the low 60s on Monday and mid 60s on Tuesday, then on Wednesday mostly sunny with high temps in the mid 80s, warming to the upper 80s on Thursday under still mostly sunny skies, lows in the mid 60s on Wednesday and around 70° on Thursday. Continued sunny on Friday and warmer, with high temps in the lower 90s. Lows Friday night once again around 70° under partly cloudy skies. Over the weekend it should remain sunny and quite warm, with highs in the upper 80s and lows in the upper 60s on both Saturday and Sunday.
