Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, July 9, 2016
  •

Saturday was a hot, initially very humid day, again with fair weather cumulus clouds in the early afternoon that marked the passage of a weak front that didn't drop the temperature but dropped the dew points into the mid 60s. Actually with the drier air the clouds went away in the late afternoon somewhat and the temps shot up into the low 90s. I still had a muggy, warm start to the day with early AM temps remaining in the low 70s overnight. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, July 18, 2016

  •

Monday was a mostly sunny, hot and humid day (highs hitting in the low 90s - lows in the early AM in the low 70s) till the mid-afternoon when a severe thunderstorm warning was posted for storms coming in on a jagged NE/SW line from the NW into my area. The storms were much more impressive in other parts of the region/state than at my location. I had a bit of lightning, several minor thunder rumblings and one loud one, relatively light winds and mostly light rain for an hour or so. Temperatures dropped from the low 90s to the low 70s in about an hour during the storm's approach and existence over our immediate area. Dew points were mostly in the low-mid 70s all day. Temperatures early this Tuesday morning have dropped into the 70° range at 4:00 AM, and will probably no lower than the upper 60s before sunrise in a few hours. On Tuesday, highs in the upper 80s under mostly sunny skies with a 20 POP for an isolated shower/storm. Tuesday night partly cloudy in the evening with a continued 20 POP for an isolated shower/storm, lows in the mid 60s. Then on Wednesday a return to sunny skies and slightly cooler and drier, with highs in the mid 80s, then warming up to around 90° on Thursday and low 90s on Friday under sunny skies. Clear overnight on Wednesday with lows in the upper 60s. Warming up to the lower 70s on Thursday night and into the mid 70s on Friday night but remaining clear to partly cloudy and dry. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, July 19, 2016

  •

Tuesday was a mostly sunny, hot and humid day (highs hitting in the low 90s - lows in the early AM around 70°) till the evening when surprise storms developed quickly - one cell developed right over me here in the Gaithersburg area. I was following it on radar, where it first showed as a very small cell. But it really blossomed quickly over me, then moved SE into the rest of the Metro area and really expanded in size and strength. It precipitated severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings all along its route south and east of me. My tipping bucket VP2 rain gauge unfortunately must be clogged so I did not catch any rain therein, so I don't know exact timing nor do I know the intensity of the rain (max rain rate). But judging from the wind log, the storm must have dropped most if not all of its rain between about 2130 and 2200. Needless to say just as it was yesterday the storms were much more impressive in other parts of the region/state than at my location. I had more lightning and thunder than yesterday, stronger winds (briefly) and brief heavy rain for about a half an hour or so. Temperatures did not drop as much as yesterday as temps started out in the dark and had already naturally dropped off some - from about 79° at 2100 to 71° at 2230. Dew points were varied through the day, mostly in the low 70s in the evening before the storm but in the 60s most of the rest of the day. Temperatures early this Wednesday morning have dropped into mid 60s at 3:30 AM, and will probably not lower much more than that before sunrise in a few hours. During the day on Wednesday there will be a return to sunny skies and slightly cooler and drier conditions, with highs in the mid 80s, then warming up to the upper 80s on Thursday and the hot mid 90s on Friday under sunny skies. Partly cloudy overnight on Wednesday with lows in the upper 60s. Warming up to the lower 70s on Thursday night under clear skies then into the mid 70s on Friday night under partly cloudy skies and a 30 POP for showers/storms. Sunny and hot on Saturday with highs in the mid 90s, lows in the mid 70s. Even hotter on Sunday unfortunately with upper 90s for high temps in the blistering hot sunny sky with lows Sunday night in the muggy, very warm partly cloudy skies with lows in the upper 70s. More infernal sunny heat on Monday with upper 90s once again, but at least with a 30 POP for a relieving shower/storm possible.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, July 20, 2016

  •

Wednesday was a mostly sunny, warm (but not hot) and slightly drier day (highs hitting in the mid 80s - lows in the early AM in the more comfortable mid 60s). No surprise storms today! Dew points were a bit more pleasant through the day, in the low - mid 60s most of the day. Temperatures early this Thursday morning have dropped into mid 60s at 3:00 AM, and will probably lower no more than the low 60s before sunrise in a few hours. During the day on Thursday sunny skies with high temps around the 90° mark. Clear overnight on Thursday with lows around 70°. Warming up to the mid 70s on Friday and Saturday night, with a 30 POP for showers/storms Friday night under partly cloudy skies and clear skies Saturday night. Sunny and hot on Friday through the weekend and into Monday with highs in the mid 90s, lows in the mid 70s Saturday night and upper 70s on Sunday night. There are some forecasters calling for highs around the 100° mark over the weekend. Hope not! Mid 90s is plenty hot enough for me. Monday during the day will be partly cloudy with a 40 POP for showers/storms as a weak front tries to come through the area. Monday night mostly cloudy and still very warm, with lows in the upper 70s. On Tuesday and Wednesday skies will be mostly sunny and not quite as hot, with highs in the low 90s on Tuesday and around 90° on Wednesday, lows in the mid 70s Tuesday night.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, July 30, 2016

  •

Saturday featured more clouds and rain, at times quite heavy especially in the early evening, which once again set a daily record for the date. Today's rainfall yielded a record setting 1.51" amount for July 30, surpassing the old record of 1.18" set back in 1996. Most of the daylight hours featured mostly cloudy skies, warm and humid (highs in the mid 80s - lows in the early AM in the muggy low 70s) with a light shower in the early PM. Dew points ranged from 70° to 77°. Lots of flooding in parts of the metro area, particularly over in the Ellicott City/Columbia area and also sections of Baltimore. Interesting enough the maximum barometric pressure value for Saturday (see below for value) coincided with the time of my max rain rate for the day (a rather impressive value of 11.52" I must say). There wasn't a particularly significant spike noted at the time, but not sure of the significance of the two different maxs for the day being set at the same time. Temperatures early this Sunday morning have dropped to around 70° at 3:30 AM, and will probably drop into the upper 60s by sunrise in a few hours. Sunday will feature partly cloudy skies with highs in the upper 80s, with only a 30 POP for showers/storms and a 40 POP Sunday night, lows in the low 70s. Partly cloudy on Monday with a 30 POP for showers/storms with highs in the upper 80s, lows in the upper 60s Monday night still with a 30 POP for showers/storms under partly cloudy skies. Tuesday and Wednesday starting to dry out with mostly sunny skies and highs in the more comfortable mid 80s and lows in the upper 60s to around 70°. Mostly sunny with highs in the mid 80s on Thursday and upper 80s on Friday, partly cloudy overnights with lows in the lower 70s.
