Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station for Memorial Day Monday, May 30, 2016
  •

Memorial Day Monday was mostly cloudy but with some sun breaks, remaining warm and humid, but cooler (only up into the low 80s) with more clouds. We didn't have any showers, as they once again elected to stay closer to the coast and other parts to the S and E. Tonight the sky is cloudy, with the temperatures falling less than last night on very light to no winds, temps around 70° now around 3:00 AM. The temperature should stay in the upper 60s by sunrise on Tuesday, with just a 20 POP for isolated showers overnight. Tuesday through Thursday should be partly sunny with highs in the mid 80s on Tuesday (20 POP for isolated showers) then partly cloudy with lower 80s on Wednesday and upper 70s on Thursday with lows in the 60° to 65° range. On Friday mostly cloudy with a 50 POP for showers/storms, highs in the upper 70s, lows in the lower 60s. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, May 31, 2016
  •
  • Tuesday wrapped up the wet month of May with no rain, which fell measurably on 18 of the 31 days of the month. It was my 10th wettest May on record - we have had some pretty wet Mays!!! The cool start we had was greatly tempered by our recent hot spell of 80s to 90 for highs and lows in the 60s but I did manage to come in a bit below normal for May average max and average temperature. Tuesday was another very warm one with high temps in the upper 80s and lows in the upper 60s. Some clouds around but showers were confined to coastal areas well to my east. Tonight temperatures are holding in the mid 60s at 3:30 AM, though we did have a bit of dry air sneak in late this past afternoon with dew point temperatures falling into the upper 50s for a while. The temperature should drop into the low 60s by sunrise on Wednesday. Wednesday and Thursday should be partly sunny with highs in the lower 80s on Wednesday and upper 70s on Thursday with lows in the 60° to 65° range. On Friday mostly cloudy with a 50 POP for showers/storms, highs in the upper 70s, lows in the lower 60s both Friday and Saturday nights. Partly cloudy and dry on Saturday with highs in the low-mid 80s, then a chance of showers/storms (50 POP) returns on Sunday with highs in the upper 70s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, June 3, 2016
  •

Friday was partly cloudy, warm and humid, about the same for high temps but warmer on the mins with higher dew points. The big difference on Friday was an afternoon thunderstorm that hit between 1600 and 1700, with moderate thunder and lightning but brief heavy rain that gave me my highest rain rate in quite a while, at 14.05"/hour at 1612. The 5 minute period at the outset of the rain yielded 0.35". No more action the rest of the day after that , just muggy - 10 degrees cooler after the storm, and held that way through the evening as air and dew point temperature were essentially the same. The temperature at 3:15 AM is around 70° and should stay there till sunrise on Saturday. Mostly cloudy on Saturday with highs in the lower 80s and a 50 POP for showers/storms, then cloudy with a likely chance of showers/storms (80 POP) Saturday night with lows in the upper 60s, then an 80 POP likelihood for showers/storms on Sunday with highs in the mid 80s. Storms could possibly get heavy and/or severe as we are in an enhanced risk for severe activity by the Severe Storm Center out in Oklahoma. An 80 POP for showers/storms Sunday evening with lows in the mid 60s, then partly cloudy and dry after midnight. Drying out for the new week with highs on Monday and Tuesday under sunny skies we should have highs in the low 80s, then 70s for highs on Wednesday and Thursday, then back up into the low 80s and sunny on Friday, with lows in the low-mid 60s through Tuesday then maybe upper 50s on Wednesday then back into the lower 60s the rest of the week.

Saturday was cloudy, warm and humid, about the same for temps as Friday. No rain on Saturday, even though it looked like we were going to get some on radar. There is a 90 POP likelihood for showers/storms on Sunday afternoon with a 70 POP for Sunday evening, with highs in the low 80s and lows in the upper 60s. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, June 5, 2016
  •

Sunday was a partly to mostly cloudy, warm and humid day, a bit warmer than Saturday, then with a brief downpour in the late afternoon that wet things down nicely. My VP2 gauge only read 0.13" for the day but it must be blocked as precipitation keeps very slowly piling up even after it has stopped raining. My cocorahs gauge showed a lot more at 0.57". The temps dropped down from the low 80s into the 70s during the rain, then into the upper 60s, with dew points about the same. Now early on Monday morning the temperature is in the mid 60s as is the dew point. The skies have cleared off mostly, just a few scattered clouds around now. Temperatures might drop into the low 60s if drier air can work in and lower the dew point a bit. Sunny with highs on Monday in the mid 80s, lows in the 60s, then low 80s on Tuesday with mostly sunny skies, then on Tuesday night starting to cool off with lows in the upper 50s. Then low 70s for highs on Wednesday, mid 70s on Thursday, then the upper 70s and sunny on Friday, with lows in the mid 50s on Wednesday night and upper 50s on Thursday night, warming to the low 60s on Friday night. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, June 9, 2016
  •

Thursday was mostly sunny, dry, cool in the early AM but only hitting 50°, failing to get into the upper 40s as predicted here at my station, then warming in the afternoon up to just above 80° by very late in the afternoon. (This time of year I seem to register my high temperature for the day between 1800 and 1830, I believe I am getting some late sun in the backyard and my sensor is getting some unintentional solar influences to cause too great a rise in the temperature than I should.) Winds were still fresh most of the day, but not as much as yesterday. Tonight temperatures have fallen into the low 60s early this Friday morning, winds are keeping up from a northerly component at times but should be veering over to a more southwesterly direction as they did during the day. By morning we may fall into the upper 50s under partly cloudy skies overnight but probably will be around the 60° mark. Sunny and less breezy on Friday with upper 70s to around 80° for highs then lows in the low 60s Friday night under partly cloudy skies. Partly cloudy on Saturday and much warmer with highs in the low 90s and a 30 POP for showers/storms both during the day and in the evening, with lows in the lower 70s. It should be mostly sunny on Sunday, with highs around 90°, then lows in the low 60s Sunday night under partly cloudy skies. Mostly sunny Monday and Tuesday, highs in the lower 80s, lows in the low-mid 60s, then partly cloudy on Wednesday and Thursday with a 30 POP for showers/storms, highs in the low 80s, lows in the low-mid 60s.

Friday was mostly sunny, dry, relatively cool in the early AM but milder than Thursday as we just got down into the mid 50s but still comfortable. It will be our last comfortable overnight for a few days. The heat and humidity are on their way, just in time for the weekend! Temperatures topped off in the low 80s with still comfortable dew points in the 50s to around 60° in the evening. (Once again, I registered my daily high temperature between 1800 and 1830 - I believe I am getting some late sun in the backyard where my temperature sensor is and it is getting some unintentional solar influences, causing too great a rise in the temperature than it should be.) This evening temperatures have dropped off into the low-mid 60s early on this Saturday morning around 2:15 AM. We won't get much lower than the low 60s by sunrise on Saturday. Mostly sunny on Saturday and much warmer and more humid with highs in the low 90s with a 30 POP for showers/storms both during the afternoon and in the partly cloudy evening, with lows in the lower 70s. Saturday turned our corner into summer, with terrible hot and humid weather, after a reasonably pleasant early AM with lows of 60°. We hit our hottest day of the year so far unfortunately, with a high temperature of 93.6° that did not break the 99° daily record for the date set back in 2000. The 30 POP for rain didn't materialize any sort of action Saturday afternoon or evening but fresh breezes at times helped to mitigate the heat somewhat. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, June 16, 2016
  •

Thursday was a threatening day, with big storms coming through in the later parts of the day. High temperatures were held down due to cloudiness, but about the same as the previous few days in the low mid 80s. Dew points were naturally high today with plenty of moisture from the Gulf and the Atlantic feeding into the system coming down from the West for the big storms. Low temperatures in the early AM were only down into the high mid 60s, limited by the high dew point temperature. Storms struck in the late afternoon and early evening in the region, and in some places earlier in the day. At my location I missed the big blockbuster storms that gave other parts of the Metro area high winds, hail, a few tornadoes, and heavy rain. I just got evening light thundershowers with light-moderate rain, light winds like I usually get, light thunder and lightning not really that close to the station, as the big storm track took the heavy action just south and east of my location. Tonight the temps fell some, through the 70s and now at 3 AM in the mid 60s with clouds and more light rain showers just to the west. Numerous showers predicted the rest of the evening, with lows in the low 60s by sunrise on Friday. Mostly cloudy Friday morning with a 70 POP for showers, then partly cloudy in the afternoon with high temps in the mid 70s with the showers becoming more scattered and less numerous. Friday evening will be mostly clear with temperatures falling into the upper 50s. Mostly Sunny on both Saturday and Father's Day Sunday with highs in the upper 70s on Friday and lower 80s on Sunday, lows in the upper 50s to lower 60s. .Looks like we kick off the new week a bit warmer, with highs reaching the mid 80s on Monday and upper 80s on Tuesday, with rain chances increasing on Tuesday afternoon and evening (40 POP). Wednesday should clear out and cool down a bit with highs in the low 80s. Lows mostly in the mid-upper 60s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Father's Day Sunday, June 19, 2016

  • Father's Day Sunday was a very warm, sunny, dry day that hit 90° when you round the actual high temp in tenths (89.6°) to the nearest whole number. I do this because most of my records are only to the nearest degree, from pre-digital days before November 2009. The early AM low was in the pleasant upper 50s. Temperatures around 2 AM early on Monday morning are in the mid 60s, dew points around the 60° mark. Temperatures should drop only into the low 60s by sunrise Monday. Looks like we kick off the new week a bit hotter, with highs reaching about 90° on Monday under sunny skies becoming partly cloudy Monday night, with a 30 POP for showers/storms after midnight and a low temperature only around 70°. Then high temperatures in the upper 80s on Tuesday under partly to mostly cloudy skies, with rain chances and dew point temperatures increasing on Tuesday afternoon and evening to a 40 POP, with temps lowering into the mid 60s overnight and showers finishing out before midnight. Wednesday should be mostly sunny with highs in the mid 80s, lows in the 60s, then on Thursday partly cloudy with highs in the low 80s and a 50 POP for showers/storms, extending into a mostly cloudy evening with lows in the mid 60s. Friday should be sunny and cooler, with high temperatures in the upper 70s, lows around 60°. Then the weekend looks pretty nice, with sunny skies and highs in the low 80s on Saturday and mid 80s on Sunday, lows mostly in the low-mid 60s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, June 20, 2016
  •

Summer arrived at 1834 EDT today, as the sun crossed the equator at that time. Depressing to me as I hate the heat and humidity of most of our summer days, but I can take small solace that from now on the daylight will be gradually getting shorter and cooling will eventually be on its way to relieve us from the oppressive heat and humidity.

Monday was another very warm, sunny, day that just missed hitting 90° max temp but had an increase in the dew point unfortunately also causing warm temps to persist this evening into early Tuesday morning as the temperature at 3:30 AM is still in the mid 70s under mostly cloudy skies. We should not get any lower than the low 70s by sunrise Tuesday. The Monday early AM low was once again in the pleasant very upper 50s. Then partly to mostly cloudy skies with high temperatures in the upper 80s on Tuesday with rain chances and dew point temperatures increasing on Tuesday afternoon to a 50 POP for showers/storms with temps lowering into the mid 60s overnight and a 50 POP for showers finishing out before midnight. Wednesday should be mostly sunny with highs in the mid 80s, lows in the upper 60s, then on Thursday mostly cloudy with highs in the mid 80s and a 50 POP for showers/storms, extending into a mostly cloudy evening with lows in the mid 60s and a continued 50 POP for showers, clearing after midnight. Friday should be sunny and a bit cooler with high temperatures in the mid 80s, lows in the mid 60s. Then the weekend looks pretty nice, with sunny skies and highs in the mid 80s on Saturday and Sunday, lows mostly in the mid-upper 60s under mostly clear skies.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, June 21, 2016
  •
  •
  • Yesterday I made reference to summer's arrival. I misstated that the sun was crossing the equator at that time to start summer. Actually the event was the sun hit the tropic of cancer, the line that marks the furthest north that the sun gets to on the earth. I think I have that correct now. Thanks to my friend Jack K up in the Buffalo area for pointing this error out to me. Always good to hear from my audience to show that my reports are being read and thought about.

Tuesday was a cloudy, stormy day with plenty of action. In the region high winds, hail, flooding rains and a few tornadoes were reported at some point during the day. I had some heavy rain at times (Max rain rate a not too shabby 9.93"/hour recorded by my VP2 at 1446.) and some decent thunder and lightning (I lost power for a few seconds right at the onset of the storms during the highest winds of the day - messed up my internet connection for a while till I figured it all out.) Warm high temps in the mid 80s were reached in the early afternoon before the storms arrived and cooled us down. Dew points reached up into the low 70s, adding to the discomfort. There were still storms around in the early evening, but didn't add much to my daily total. Temperatures gradually have fallen off through the 70s and into the mid 60s early on this Wednesday morning around 3:30 AM. We should probably get into the low 60s by morning, under partly cloudy skies the rest of the night. The Monday early AM low barely dropped below the 70° mark at 69.6° but the daily low temp was reached just prior to midnight with a reading of 68.2°. Wednesday should be mostly sunny with highs in the mid 80s, lows in the upper 60s with a 70 POP for showers/storms late, then on Thursday mostly cloudy with highs in the mid 80s and a 70 POP for showers/storms, extending into a mostly cloudy evening with lows in the mid 60s and a continued 70 POP for showers. Friday should be sunny and a bit cooler with high temperatures around 80° and lows in the mid 60s. Then the weekend looks pretty nice, with sunny skies and highs in the mid 80s on Saturday and Sunday, lows mostly in the mid-upper 60s under mostly clear skies.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, June 23, 2016
  •

Thursday was supposed to be another wild stormy day, and it was in other areas of the region, particularly out in much of West Virginia which had tremendous flooding in about 80% of the counties in the state, but other than a brief thundershower in the early AM, it was just a cloudy, humid day here where I didn't even reach 80° for a high temperature. The radar looked really impressive coming out of OH, western PA and WV just prior to going to bed, and I really thought we were going to get a lot of rain (at least). At 0602 I was awakened by a long, rolling loud clap of thunder. But that was all the thunder I heard all day! We had light rain between that point and about 0800, with a modest 0.40" max rain rate recorded about an hour later at 0706. And an hour later around 0800 when the rain was winding down, I had a brief rapid pressure drop of about 0.10" in less than a half an hour, but by 0900 the pressure was back to what it was before the storm. Temperatures have very gradually fallen off through the 70s to right around the 70° mark at 3 AM. under muggy, cloudy skies. We should not drop much if at all the rest of the night till sunrise on Friday. There is a 50 POP for showers/storms the rest of the night but radar is not showing much out there to give us much if anything within the next few hours till sunrise. Friday should remain mostly cloudy and muggy, with a 40 POP for possible showers/storms, extending into the evening with high temperatures in the lower 80s with lows in the mid 60s. Then the weekend looks pretty nice, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the low-mid 80s on Saturday and Sunday, lows at night mostly in the low-mid 60s under mostly clear skies. Rain chances appear to be returning somewhat on Monday (50 POP - mid 80s for highs) and Tuesday (40 POP - upper 80s for highs). Wednesday and Thursday look to be returning to seasonably warm, sunny and dry, with highs in the low 80s and lows in the low 60s both days.

I followed my VP2 guidance yesterday that had 0.00" precipitation but it under-reported a light shower I noticed in the early evening but forgot about. I checked my Lake Region tonight and I found 0.03" in there from yesterday's light shower. Thanks to my friends Rick H and Josh H for mentioning the likelihood that I got rain on Friday. My records below have been revised to include this amount. Sorry about this error.

There are some weird echoes in southern VA that I cannot determine exactly what I am seeing right now. I don't think they are anything, but it doesn't look like the usual ground clutter, and is not centered around a radar location.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, June 28, 2016
  •

Tuesday was partly cloudy, warmer (highs in the upper 80s), and humid (dew points mostly in the 70s all day) after a muggy overnight with lows only dropping into the low 70s. A line of showers/storms developed and passed through in the late afternoon, but I missed all of the rainfall action that other areas got (over towards Baltimore and over in parts of suburban Virginia - and also southern Maryland). Temperatures early this Wednesday morning have finally dropped into the mid 60s around 3 AM, with dew points also in the slightly drier mid 60s. We probably will drop only a bit more to the low 60s by sunrise on Wednesday under partly cloudy skies. Mostly sunny on both Wednesday and Thursday with highs in the low 80s and lows in the low 60s on Wednesday night and upper 60s on Thursday night with skies becoming cloudy. A 40 POP chance for showers/ storms appears to be coming back for Friday during the day with highs in the mid 80s under partly cloudy skies, lows in the upper 60s. Mostly sunny on Saturday and Sunday, highs in the low-mid 80s, lows in the mid 60s with a 30 POP for showers/storms during the day on Saturday.
