Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, March 4, 2016
  •

Friday featured early AM light snow which ended well before I got up, which melted completely by the time I arose in the early afternoon. Temps were in the 30s and it remained cloudy, but solar radiation comes through the clouds and is getting quite strong as we approach springtime. So melting of the light snow was fast and complete. The snow held onto its pattern of accumulation from Thursday late evening, only sticking to grass, tree branches and car tops, and remaining off roadways and sidewalks. Saturday should be cloudy with highs in the mid 40s, lows in the 30s Saturday night with a 70 POP for rain or snow showers before midnight and numerous snow showers after midnight but with little or no accumulation with a low in the low 30s. Sunday should turn mostly sunny after a cloudy beginning with highs in the upper 40s, lows in the 30s. High temps climb from there, upper 50s on Monday, upper 60s on Tuesday, and low 70s on Wednesday with mostly sunny skies. Lows in the 30s early rising up to the low 50s by Wednesday. Showers possible on Thursday but remaining mild with high temps in the upper 60s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, March 5, 2016

  • Saturday featured mostly cloudy skies with temps in the 30s in the early AM (above freezing), reaching the mid 40s by mid-afternoon. Temps have dropped off some, but at 2:35 AM are still above freezing in the mid 30s. Snow is falling above according to radar and has just started to fall very lightly. The area of snow is pretty small, covering just a few counties around me and moving east. We have a 50 POP for snow showers overnight with lows in the low 30s. Little to no accumulation expected. Sunday morning after sunrise we might still have a few snow showers around but doubtful it will last much past 8 AM. Eventually it will clear up and give us a sunny afternoon with high temps in the upper 40s. Lows Sunday night under clear skies in the low 30s. High temps climb from there, upper 50s on Monday, near 70° on Tuesday, and low 70s on Wednesday with mostly sunny skies. Lows in the 30s early rising up to the low 50s by Wednesday. Showers possible on Thursday and Friday, remaining mild with high temps in the mid 60s on Thursday and upper 50s on Friday, lows in the 40s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, March 6, 2016
  •

Sunday featured cloudy skies overnight with light snow falling around 3 AM and lasting a few hours. Temps were above freezing in the mid 30s, so the snow only stuck to car tops (barely) with just a trace amount. It remained pretty cloudy most of the day, but with some sun at times, with temps rising into the upper 40s by mid-afternoon. Temps have dropped off some, but at 3:35 AM are just at the freezing mark. We might make it into the upper 20s by sunrise. During the day on Monday mostly sunny skies should help rise the temperatures up into the low 60s, lows in the lower 40s. Then upper 60s on Tuesday, lows in the upper 40s, then lower 70s on Wednesday, all with mostly sunny skies, and lows Wednesday night around 50°. Slightly cooler the rest of the week, but still hitting high temps somewhere in the 60s with lows still in the 40s. Showers look like a probability as we head into the weekend.

Monday featured partly cloudy skies most of the day and a significant warmup after one more chilly, subfreezing night which we won't have for a while heading forward, as high temps reached the mid 60s by mid-afternoon. Wednesday featured mostly sunny skies and more soaring temperatures, setting a personal daily record for the date at 81° and a significant 40° temperature range for the day with the early morning minimum temperature of 41°. So now March 9 is the warmest day of the year so far. Tomorrow's high temp is going to be very similar, and may tie or break today's mark, and will probably set another daily max temp record. Temps have dropped off this evening/overnight some, but not nearly as much as last night, as it has just gone below the 60° mark just before 3 AM. Probably won't drop off much more than the mid 50s till sunrise. Thursday should be mostly cloudy and warm with high temps around 80°, lows in the 50s with late showers (50 POP) with a cold frontal passage. Clearing skies and cooler temps on Friday, with highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s. On Saturday mostly sunny with highs in the 60s. Clouding up Saturday night into Sunday, with a 40 POP for showers late Sunday. Tonight we have had some showers after midnight as temps have dropped a bit into the mid 40s. But the showers appear to have moved off to my NE and I don't think we will get any more overnight. Showers are the rule rather than the exception the next few days through Wednesday, with a gradual warmup by Wednesday into the low 70s after 50s and 60s on Monday and Tuesday for high temps. Lows mostly in the 40s. Some nicer days at the end of the week with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s, then probably more showers next weekend. All times in today's report are in Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

  • Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for St Patrick's Day Thursday, March 17, 2016
  •

St. Patrick's Day Thursday was a partly cloudy day, a bit cooler than yesterday but still pretty nice, but with dew points dropping from yesterday into the low 40s then 30s later on in the day. After low air temps in the low 40s in the early AM, temps rose into the mid 60s by mid-afternoon. Temps this evening have dropped off into the mid 40s now at almost 3 AM under clear skies. We might sneak into the upper 30s by sunrise on Friday. Friday should be mostly sunny with highs in the mid 60s with lows in the mid 30s. Saturday should be sunny early with highs in the 50s, but clouding up in the afternoon with a 50 POP for rain by late in the day. On Saturday night with colder temps in the 30s, rain may change to wet snow, continuing on Sunday with a 90 POP and a high temp of around 40° and a 60 POP Sunday night with continued rain or snow. Right now the snow/rain line is not exactly determined, but should be right around our area. But if it turns out to be snow, the ground has warmed and the air temps will still be above freezing, so stickage will be limited to grassy areas and car tops most likely if at all. On Monday, sunny and chilly, with highs in the 40s and lows in the 30s. Thereafter the rest of the week should be warming up to having high temps in the upper 60s to around 70° by mid-week and beyond to the end of the week (at least) Lows will also migrate upwards, from the low 30s on Monday to the 40s by mid-week and thereafter.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, March 19, 2016

  • Saturday was cloudy and colder, with the max temp reached at the very beginning of the day at midnight, then dropping into the 30s most of the day with light rain coming in mid-day, then changing to snow in the later PM hours, with a very brief period of nicely falling snow with big flakes, then quickly lessening to very light snow. All was wet snow, and there was a brief period of accumulation on some surfaces, mostly the grass and car tops, but nothing on the roads. And with temps remaining above freezing through the evening, this little bit of snow melted off from all surfaces. At 3 AM early this Sunday morning temp is at 36.5° and has been rising slowly over the past few hours. Precipitation has also quit falling over that same time period roughly. There is still a chance overnight for more snow or rain, but radar doesn't seem to be indicating that as much of a possibility. Temps should remain steady overnight. On Sunday, cloudy with a 50 POP for light snow in the morning, then rain showers in the afternoon, with high temps in the low 40s. A 60 POP for snow or rain showers on Sunday night, with a low temp around 30°. Any snow that does fall will maintain the stickage pattern of just on car tops and grass through Sunday evening. a On Monday, sunny and chilly, with highs in the upper 40s and lows around 30°. Thereafter the rest of the week should be mostly sunny and warming up each successive day from highs of mid 50s on Monday to having high temps in the low 70s by Thursday. Lows will also migrate upwards, from the low 30s on Monday to the 40s by mid-week and 50s by Thursday. •

Wednesday was mostly sunny and warmer. There was a high cloud overcast at times in the afternoon, but that didn't keep temps to soar into the mid 70s after a mild start in the early AM with lows only in the low 50s. Cherry blossoms are out in the downtown Tidal Basin, and many were out walking around admiring them into the early evening, helped by Daylight Savings Time sunsets now at almost 7:30 PM. We have a red flag warning for a fire weather watch during most of Thursday with sunny skies and dry conditions, temps once again topping out in the mid 70s. Lows will also remain mild, with lows in the upper 40s on Wednesday night and upper 50s on Thursday night. A 90 POP for showers Thursday night as a cold front passes through, with a continued 90 POP for showers Friday morning, and a chance of showers in the afternoon as well, but less of a chance. It should still be warm on Friday, with highs in the low 70s as the cooler air takes a while to work its way into the area, especially with the clouds and showers hanging around. Friday night we should clear out and cool off, with lows in the upper 30s. Over the weekend continued relatively cool, but still pleasant and mostly sunny both days, with highs in the upper 50s on Saturday and mid 60s for Easter Sunday. Lows Saturday night around 40°. Sunday night becoming cloudy with showers possible (50 POP) lows in the upper 40s, then on Monday temps in the lower 60s for highs with a 60 POP for more showers then lower 40s for lows on Monday night. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for April Fools Day, Friday, April 1, 2016
  •

Friday was partly to mostly cloudy and much warmer, with the high temperature of 82.5° the warmest temperature of the year so far, and warmest since I had 85.6° back on September 19, 2015. Rounding this value up to 83° this ties the daily record for April 1, set back in 1986. Dew points climbed into the 60s, and the morning min temperature of 64.2° easily eclipsed the old daily high min temp record of 56° set back in 1998. I hope this is not foreshadowing a hot summer! But alas the next few days we will have a major cool down and actually get back below normal with our temperatures. Tonight the temperatures at 3 AM just dropped below 60° and should be in the 50s by sunrise on Saturday. There is a 60 POP for showers overnight and on Saturday, but right now the showers are elsewhere and don't seem to be headed our way anytime within the next few hours. I had a brief shower in the late afternoon on Friday, with thunderstorms also in the area, but I didn't hear any thunder. High temps on Saturday will be cooler, in the low 60s, with clouds in the morning and more widespread showers giving way to partly cloudy skies and more scattered, light showers in the afternoon. The lows on Saturday night will be in the mid 30s with partly cloudy skies and a 50 POP for more showers, particularly after midnight with possibly a few snow flakes mixed in under increasingly more unstable cold flow from the NW. We have a high wind watch for our area till Sunday morning. Even cooler on Sunday with more sunny skies, highs only in the upper 40s with winds gusting as high as 45 MPH. Sunday night we will have lows in the mid 30s. A 60 POP for showers possible on Monday and Monday night ahead of yet another cold front with highs in the upper 60s and lows in the upper 30s, then clearing on Tuesday and cooler once again, highs in the mid 40s, lows in the upper 20s with widespead freezing temperatures in the region.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, April 2, 2016
  •

Saturday was partly to mostly cloudy at times and gradually cooler, with early AM light showers and late evening light showers, with increasing winds this evening. Temps rose to the mid 60s by mid-afternoon, then dropped down in the evening into the low 40s by midnight obs. We are under a high wind warning overnight, with a freeze warning also. Snow has been falling in the mountains to the west, and look like we might get a flake overnight, but I would have to be quite lucky to see any fall here. We also have a lot of tree blossoms starting to come down, especially with our high winds, and it can fool you at first thinking it is snow. The lows by sunrise Sunday morning should be in the low to mid 30s. The wind is really howling! Cooler on Sunday with more sunny skies, highs only in the upper 40s with winds gusting as high as 50 MPH. Sunday night we will have lows in the upper 30s, with clouds coming in late. A 70 POP for showers possible on Monday and Monday night ahead of yet another cold front with highs in the mid 60s and lows in the upper 20s, then clearing on Tuesday and cooler once again, highs in the mid 40s, lows around 30°. Milder with more showers on Wednesday and Thursday, then clearing and cooling off once again on Friday. Roller coaster ups and downs, typical for early spring around here!
