Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, January 29, 2015 Thursday was increasingly cloudy and cold, after a clear, very cold overnight. We also had a brief mixed precipitation shower blow through in the mid-late afternoon. I am not sure what precipitation types I had, but heard there was possibly sleet, freezing rain, rain and snow in the mix. Tonight it is still cloudy with temps remaining in the 30s. We have a wind advisory out for our area overnight heading into Friday. I found my Yaktrax overshoe traction cleats, so I was able to safely venture out to the rain gauge at midnight observation time and swap out my gauge so I could measure the catch for the day in the warmth of the inside of the house at my leisure. It will continue cold over the next several days, with highs mostly in the upper 20s to mid 30s and lows mostly in the teens and twenties. Our next chance for a winter storm is later on Sunday into Monday, with possibly significant snow during that period. Stay tuned for updates on that system over the next few days. Next week looks to clear out and remain cold. Kevin Shaw
I had a power outage in my neighborhood last night (4/16) and could not post my daily wx update. I am trying to post a very brief one here just to let you know. Power was out for about 3-4 hours overnight (not weather-related) Brief highlights for Thursday - a basically partly to mostly cloudy day - cloudy particularly in the evening with some light showers just prior to obs but while I was out of power. Luckily my VP2 battery backup was working. Data showing below was obtained from my display - normally I get it through my computer connections. High temp 71.3 @ 1443 Low temp 44.3 @ 0710 Peak wind gust 12 MPH @ 1201 ESE High pressure 30.43" @ 0119 Low pressure 30.23" @ 2349 Max RH 82% @ 2354 Min RH 26% @ 1445 Dew pt range today: 53° to 32° Precip: 0.01" Midnight readings: Temp 58.5 RH 82%, Dew pt 53 Pressure steady at 30.23" Wind calm. Light rain had been falling but I don't think was right at midnight. That is about all I have time for right now. Kevin
Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, April 17, 2015 I posted a brief report during the day on Friday for Thursday's weather due to a power outage in my neighborhood late Thursday/early Friday that kept me from posting my usual report here at the usual time. Friday was mostly cloudy overnight with light rain, then clearing off and a pretty nice day during daylight hours with warm temps - only mid 50s for lows, upper 70s for high temps. Friday evening into early Saturday morning found temps sliding down some, through the 60s into the mid 50s now during these early Saturday morning hours. Saturday should be a repeat of Friday, perhaps a few degrees warmer as we may reach 80 for the daily high temperature. Mild Saturday night with lows in the 50s, then cooler on Sunday with highs in the mid-upper 60s, partly cloudy but turning cloudy by evening, with rain, possibly heavy, after midnight early Monday morning (100 POP). A 70 POP for more rain (possibly even a thunderstorm) during the day on Monday, highs in the 60s, lows in the 50s. Monday night still a 50 POP for showers, cooling off into the upper 40s. Partly to mostly sunny from Tuesday through the rest of the workweek, with temps in the upper 60s on Tuesday sliding down gradually to highs in the upper 50s by Friday as a cooling trend takes hold. Lows mostly in the 40s. Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, April 21, 2015 Tuesday featured very light overnight rain , kind of leftover from Monday's much more significant output. Clouds overnight gave way to mostly to partly cloudy skies during the day, breezy at times, and cooler, with high temps in the mid 60s. Tonight the temperatures have dropped off nicely, and early this Wednesday morning are in the mid 40s. We probably will be in the low 40s by sunrise, unless cloud cover comes in and puts a ceiling over us and the sinking temperatures. During the day clouds will for sure come in ahead of a midwestern Cold Frontal system, with a 70 POP for showers and even thunderstorms on Wednesday afternoon into the early evening. Slowly clearing off on Wednesday night and turning colder, with lows by morning in the upper 30s. Highs on Thursday and Friday under partly cloudy skies should be in the upper 50s. Lows in the upper 30s on Thursday night and mid 30s with scattered areas of frost possible on Friday night. Saturday should see a return of some clouds, with highs in the lower 60s, and a 40 POP for possible rain. Sunday should clear off once again and feature high temps back again in the lower 60s. Roller coaster ride a bit on the temps, par for the course for this time of year. Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather report for Thursday, February 11, 2016 On Thursday we had clear skies with colder temperatures, particularly in the evening. Snow showers went elsewhere, and all we got were plummeting temperatures and wind chills. Cold winds kept up most all day, and temperatures held well below the freezing mark, particularly this evening with teen values showing up prior to midnight observation. I figure we will be in the low teens by sunrise on Friday. During the day on Friday becoming partly to mostly cloudy as yet another strong cold front enters the region, with highs in the low 30s and scattered snow showers starting to fall in the afternoon, stronger in the evening (50 POP), possibly an inch of accumulation under strong NW winds, with lows Friday night in the upper teens. Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, February 12, 2016 On Friday we had mostly to partly sunny skies and not quite as cold as yesterday early, but in the evening temps returned into the 20s with snow showers as an arctic front moved through the area. We are now set up with our coldest weekend of the season. Snow did not amount to much of anything, but it was pretty as it fell dry and flew around a bit. Winds were relatively light today, but should pick up overnight with below zero wind chills also coming in this weekend. Snow showers are showing up on the radar to my north and west, so we still have a chance for some more. A winter weather advisory for snow was posted for the period prior to midnight, and now a wind advisory and a wind chill advisory have kicked in for most all of Saturday. Winds of 20-30 MPH with possible gusts to 45 MPH in some locations (not mine) in the region. Wind chills may go below zero at times. Sunny and very cold with low 20s for highs over the weekend, lows around 8° Saturday night (still strong winds at times, keeping the temps from going lower, but wind chills will probably be around if not below zero). Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, February 16, 2016 On Tuesday we had the warmer part of the storm, with freezing rain for the first few hours of the day, then near sunrise got above the freezing mark and had just plain rain, moderate-heavy at times through the rest of the morning. Temps kept rising through the 30s to around 40 by mid-day, then mid 40s by mid-afternoon with the sun coming out nicely and starting to dry us out, especially with stronger westerly breezes. The warmer rain really put a dent on the snow/ice cover, and with the afternoon sun my snow and ice are pretty much gone this evening. Temps are dropping under clear skies and at 2 AM are just over the freezing mark at 32.5°. I forgot to mention last night that I was fairly easily able to get out to swap out my frozen rain gauge on the fence in the backyard by putting on a pair of YakTrax, studded overshoes that kept me from slipping on the ice. There still was a tiny bit of ice tonight, but I didn't put the YakTrax on tonight and was fine. We should remain clear overnight with temps lowering a bit more down to around 30 or upper 20s perhaps. Wednesday and Thursday partly sunny to mostly sunny, highs in the mid 40s Wednesday and in the upper 30s on Thursday, lows in the mid-upper 20s. Sunny with highs in the mid 40s on Friday, then a warm up over the weekend with highs in the upper 50s on Saturday and mid 50s on Sunday, with lows well above freezing around the upper 30s to lower 40s. Cooling back down early next week with a possible winter storm around Tuesday or Wednesday that we will have to see how it develops for our region. Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, February 24, 2016 Wednesday was quite a day. Cloudy and mild, then warm in the afternoon with the temps reaching the low 60s. Occasional rain, drizzle, fog in the AM gave way to more showery rain in the PM, but of particular note was the thunderstorm that blew in about 1745 EST. I registered my high temp for the day (61.8°) just a few minutes before the storm hit. Brief heavy rain, recorded a PWG of 24 MPH from the south at 1746, but judging from the whole trees in motion I would say my unobstructed peak wind gust was more like 40-50 MPH. There was a report of a 70 MPH gust at Weatherbug Headquarters in nearby Germantown. I had a decent 7.48" max rain rate recorded at 1748, with 0.21" of rain falling during the 5 minute period between 1745 and 1750. Many people reported rainbows/double rainbows on the backside of the storm as it was exiting. There were flood watches and warnings posted for the day, and for these storms tornado watches and even some areas got tornado warnings, plus numerous severe thunderstorm warnings. The humidity stayed up to almost 100% all day, and with the rounding conventions used, the max dew point temperature today was 62° while the max air temp was only 61.8° !! Luckily I did not lose power during the storm, but later on I lost my internet connection and phone for a while - what a time for Verizon to be doing maintenance on the system! But they warned that they would be working on it till 10 AM, but service has already been restored thankfully just before 3 AM today! Mostly Cloudy on Thursday with a 20 POP for an isolated rain shower, highs in the upper 40s, lows around 30° as we finally start to clear out. Mostly sunny with seasonable temperatures on Friday, highs in the upper 30s and lows in the mid 20s. Continued sunny skies with moderating temperatures (highs in the low 40s Saturday, upper 50s Sunday - lows in the low 30s Saturday night but in the mid 40s Sunday night) as we finish up February with a sunny and mild day (upper 50s again) on Leap Year Monday.
