Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, December 26, 2014 I was off work on Friday also so I slept in and relaxed most of the day. Temps started off under clear, calm skies just below freezing, but rose quickly through the 30s and 40s into the low 50s by mid-afternoon under mostly sunny skies. Under clear skies this evening the temps have dropped back down just as quickly, and are now just below freezing early on this Saturday morning. We should reach the upper 20s by sunrise. Saturday will be sunny for the most part once again, with highs in the low 50s, then clouding up on Saturday night and not as cold, with lows only in the upper 30s to around 40. Sunday will be cloudy with highs in the low 50s and a 70 POP for rain, continuing into the evening/overnight hours, becoming more showery late. Monday should be cooling off a bit but remain cloudy with a 40 POP for continued rain showers. Clearing off Monday night, then the rest of next week should be sunny to partly cloudy with high temps mostly in the mid-upper 30s to around 40. Lows most days somewhere in the 20s. No further chances for rain after Monday as it looks now while finishing up the 2014 year. I think as we get further in January we will see it generally become colder, though without any spectacular cold snaps such as we had in January 2014 on a few selected days. Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, January 5, 2015 Sunday was sunny, breezy and gradually colder all day, temps basically falling all day. Temps are now in the low 20s under an increasing cloud cover. Snow is due here in a few hours, before sunrise, and accumulating 1-2 inches as it looks now. It should be over by mid-day, but the morning rush hour is going to be a problem most likely. Temps holding well below freezing and the snow will be sticking to the roads. Gradually we should clear up during the afternoon, and turn colder. We should reach the upper teens by Tuesday overnight, then 20s for highs on both Wednesday and Thursday under mostly sunny skies and windy on Wednesday with wind chills down around 0. Thursday will actually be a bit colder with low 20s for highs, but the winds should slacken so there is a trade off on the apparent temperature. Lows will be in the low teens, our coldest weather of the season, and since last winter. We should see a moderating trend starting on Wednesday, with high temps getting above freezing but not by much (mid 30s).The weather underground link to my station data is:http://www.wunderground.com/personal-weather-station/dashboard?ID=K...My CWOP link (CWOP ID DW4566 - one web address to see my real-time data there is:http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/wxpage.cgi?call=DW4566&last=24&...)My data can also be found at: http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusmanWeatherbug is picking up my Bennington weather station data now. Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, January 21, 2015 Wednesday was cloudy, cold, and snowy during the mid-day. I stayed home sick and slept all morning, saw the snow mid-day coming down pretty good for a few hours from about 1100-1600. Temps maxed out in the mid 30s late morning, then during the snow fell a bit to 32-33. Snow wound down by late afternoon, and this evening the temps have held right around the freezing mark. Icing is a problem over night as forecasted lows by sunrise are in the upper 20s. Lots of standing water around from the snow melting a bit after it stopped, and ice has already formed as I experienced on the way to my rain gauge in the backyard at midnight observation. A winter weather advisory is out overnight for light freezing fog, light freezing drizzle, and possibly a bit of light snow. If the clouds hang around all night, then the temps won't drop very much overnight. Thursday should eventually become sunny with temps up in the mid 40s,lows Thursday night back down into the 20s but lots of snow should melt during the day on Thursday. Friday should be mild and sunny at first, with highs back up in the low-mid 40s, but then cloud over towards evening with our next storm coming. Late Friday night precipitation should start falling, with temps in the 30s, probably starting off as rain but then changing over to snow on Saturday morning and we may get a few inches out of this storm - stay tuned for updates. Sunday is the calm between the storms, then we have another possible snowstorm on Monday. Wait a few days for further details on that storm's possibilities here in my region. Then next week thereafter is should be clear and cold, with high temps in the low-mid 30s and lows in the low 20s. Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, January 22, 2015 Thursday was mostly sunny and milder, high temps up in the mid 40s. Snow from yesterday was wiped out in the sunny, mild conditions. Just a few man-made piles left around. It was cloudy overnight with light freezing drizzle and light to moderate freezing fog, something we don't get around here very often. Tonight is drier, clear, with temps down around the freezing mark. But nothing really left to freeze for the morning commute. Friday should start out sunny and chilly early, then increasing clouds in the afternoon with high temps in the upper 30s - rain and snow looks to be coming in earlier now, in the mid-late afternoon (50 POP). Then a combination of rain, sleet and snow Friday night into Saturday, temps in the 30s, maybe an inch or two of accumulation. Saturday night should clear off with low temps in the 20s,then partly cloudy on Sunday with high temps in the upper 30s. Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, January 23, 2015 Friday dawned cold and clear with lows in the mid 20s, but clouds increased during the day quickly as the storm to our South moved on in. Late afternoon it started as a "warm light snow" that I observed on the way home from work just after 4 PM. Light snow kept up for a few hours, then began to mix with sleet and rain, then by mid-evening it was all rain, and fell moderately at times through obs and into the early Saturday morning hours. A turn to snow should happen sometime later this morning as we get onto the backside of the storm. The snow/ice combination turned sour for me, as I slipped and fell out front of my house, banging up my knees, hands and elbows, scraping them a bit. I had a hard time getting up, one of the reasons I have a real fear of falling. I will survive, just one of those battle scars one must suffer through at times while observing and recording the weather. Luckily when I went to read my rain gauge at midnight obs, the rain had washed away most of the iciness, at least off the backyard cement slab, which lacks any tricky steps like out in the front yard. We are still under a winter weather advisory till noon on Saturday. Temps started out in the upper 30s when precipitation began as snow, then cooled down into just above freezing around 33 later on when it was raining. Still 33 early this Saturday with light rain continuing to fall. On Saturday we eventually should clear off and the sun might come out by sometime in the afternoon with high temps in the upper 30s to low 40s. Lows Saturday night into the 20s. Sunday should cloud up ahead of the next storm we are due for, with highs in the upper 30s. Rain or snow should start Sunday night, lows in the 20s changing over to snow overnight and continuing most all day Monday, with an 80 POP for snow overnight, 60 POP for snow Monday, and 50 POP Monday evening, and turning colder with temps dropping well down into the teens as clearing develops late. Definitely Monday' storm will be much more of a snow producer for our area. Tuesday should see a sunny and cold day with highs in the low 20s and lows in the teens Tuesday night. Wednesday sunny and not quite as cold, but still below freezing with a high around 30. Cloudy and not as cold Wednesday night with a low around 20. Then cloudy on Thursday with highs in the upper 30s, lows in the 20s. Friday partly cloudy with highs in the mid 30s. Kevin Shaw
Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, January 24, 2015 Early Saturday continued cloudy and cool, just above freezing, with light rain continuing from late Friday evening. I slept a lot to recover from my icefall injuries on Friday evening, but I don't think we got anything but rain overnight and also in occasional rain during the day on Saturday. Temperatures remained in the 30s, and clouds persisted most all day. Tonight temps have continued in the 30s with cloudy skies. Sunday will be partly cloudy in teh AM but cloud up in the PM, with a 20 POP for showers possible. Sunday night temps will be in the 20s with snow starting to fall during the evening hours, perhaps mixed with rain at first. We have a WINTER STORM WATCH posted for a possible 4-6 inches of snow from late Sunday night through 6 PM Monday night. Heaviest snow is expected to fall between Midnight Sunday through late Monday morning. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing most of the time, upper 20s to low 30s. Colder Monday night with temps falling into the mid 20s, with snow continuing. Tuesday should be cold and cloudy with continued snow, more in the form of snow showers. Roads should become quite snow covered and slippery on Monday during morning rush hour. Delays and cancellations expected. The rest of the week will be partly to mostly sunny and cold, high temps around the freezing mark or perhaps a bit below, with low temps in the teens and 20s. Possibly colder at night if we get the anticipated 4-6 inches of snow and get clear and calm one or more of the evenings. Over the past few years, we don't seem to get those conditions, with clouds that keep the temps from dropping with the snow pack. A 40 POP for snow showers on Thursday night, otherwise it should be cold and dry the rest of the week.
