Thanksgiving Thursday featured considerable clouds, thin most of the time with sun filtering through, and seasonably chilly temps in the 30s in the early AM and low 40s by afternoon. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, November 28, 2014

Black Friday featured mostly clouds in the morning with scattered snow flurries that weren't measurable at my location and cold temps around freezing, then partial clearing in the afternoon and evening, with continued cold as temps never made it higher than the mid 30s. This evening/early Saturday morning has found temps in the 20s with clouds and scattered flurries in the area. It should be cloudy with highs around 45 on Saturday, then warming into the 50s on Sunday and near 60 on Monday. Rain showers can be expected by Tuesday next week, with temps fluctuating up and down a bit day by day.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, November 29, 2014

Saturday had left over clouds and cold in the early am with a few scattered snow flurries that moved on by mid-morning. The afternoon had milder temperatures in the mid 40s with partly to mostly cloudy skies. Milder temps have held forth in the evening into the early morning hours of Sunday, rising slowly from the low 40s to mid 40s on steady southerly component winds. Sunday should be milder still, as we reach into the mid 50s under partly cloudy skies. Temps should hold again on Monday (upper 50s) with a 30 POP for showers by the afternoon. Colder on Monday night through Tuesday with highs on Tuesday only in the mid 30s, with a 30-40 POP for rain or snow showers through the evening. Milder temps with occasional chances at rain showers can be expected the rest of the week as we plunge into the wintry month of December. No big arctic outbreaks of really cold weather looks to be coming any time soon, anytime during the upcoming week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, November 30, 2014
  •

Sunday was mild all day with lots of clouds around, particularly in the AM and in the evening - some sun in the afternoon when the temps reached into the 60s. Tonight we remain mild, holding in the mid 50s through to the early Monday morning hours I am in now. It should be mild and partly sunny on Monday, highs in the 60s once again. Cooler weather coming in Monday night, then cold enough on Tuesday that we are expecting a mix of a variety of frozen precipitation possible - freezing rain, sleet and snow - but probably won't accumulate a lot (70 POP). Temps should be in the 30s to low 40s on Tuesday afternoon, then down into the 20s on Tuesday night with freezing rain possible. Wednesday through Friday should be cloudy and chilly, with a 30-40 POP for rain showers mostly, possibly mixed in with snow showers on Wednesday afternoon. High temps in the upper 30s to low 40s, with lows in the upper 20s to low 30s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, December 1, 2014
  •

Monday was a very mild day in the morning and into the mid-afternoon with partly sunny skies, temps topped off right around the 70 mark. That 70 max was not a daily record, that still stands at 74 from back in 1980. Clouds came in mid afternoon with a frontal passage that has stalled out, temps have been dropping ever since, through the 60s and 50s and most of the 40s at this point early on Tuesday morning. We had some light evening rain but have had a dry spell for a while now. As sunrise approaches in a few hours, we should start seeing precipitation (70 POP) - perhaps some snow, sleet and/or freezing rain mixed in at times, particularly in the morning hours. Nothing really piling up, amounts should be light. Temps should remain in the mid to upper 30s. There is an 80 POP for precip during the day on Tuesday, a 50 POP in the evening. Rain should be falling off by late evening, and turn just cloudy overnight. Cloudy on Wednesday with high temps in the upper 40s to around 50. Cooler temps with light to moderate rain chances the rest of the week, with highs in the low 40s and lows in the 20s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, December 2, 2014
  •

Well the ominous sounding forecast for Tuesday of mixed precipitation and icy roads didn't pan out in most of Montgomery County, esp. where I was driving. We had a little light rain over night as temps dropped through the 40s into the 30s, but above freezing so had no icy roads on the way into work. Classic overrunning pattern over a strong high pressure - 30.62" high pressure today may be the high reading for the month. Remained cloudy and cold, with temps remaining in the 30s during the day, we had mid 30s in the evening with more significant rains but still not freezing. Clouds will remain overnight with temps holding, then clouds and milder temps on Wednesday with highs reaching into the 50s. Turning partly cloudy then clear with cooler temps on Thursday, then clouding over again on Friday and on Saturday with a 30-40 POP for rain showers and seasonable temps in the low to mid 40s. Sunday should clear again with temps around 50. Low temps most nights in the 30s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, December 4, 2014

Thursday was a bit of a cooler day than Wednesday with a bit of light drizzle early this evening. It was the first time we hit the freezing mark on our daily min temperature so far in December. Nothing impressive though with a 31.5° min temp in early December! A cool, damp start to the month for sure! Should be mostly cloudy through Saturday, with significant rains on Saturday. Seasonable temps, mostly in the 40s by day, 30s by night. We should see a bit of sun for a time on Friday, and definitely partly cloudy skies on Sunday once that rain area moves off.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, December 5, 2014

Friday was a cloudy, damp day with a very small temperature range for the entire 24 hour observation period. Officially a 3.1° spread, about as low as I normally can go at this time of the year. Occasional spits of light rain and drizzle also only produced a small amount of precipitation for the day. Temps should change little the rest of the overnight, and with clouds and rain all day on Saturday there won't be a lot of temperature variation once again. Temps over the weekend should be in the 40s by day, 30s by night. Sunday should become partly cloudy with some sun, drying us out. Monday clouds return as another storm might develop late and threaten us with more precipitation late in the day and into Tuesday morning, with temps still remaining in the seasonable 40s and lows continuing in the 30s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, December 6, 2014
  •

Saturday was a cloudy, damp day with only a little greater temperature range than on Friday. Light rain fell off and on under light winds all day, pressure bottomed out in the late afternoon, then the storm started moving off and my winds really picked up the rest of the day. Still cloudy most of the evening, but clearing off now and on Sunday we should have a partly cloudy day with temps in the 40s. Lows in the 30s. The week ahead looks to have high temps in the 40s and lows in the 30s, cloudy Monday, rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, showers ending Thursday then sunny hopefully on Friday. Temps continue on a seasonably cool pattern with highs in the 40s and lows in the 30s. Low 40s during the rainy days, upper 40s by Friday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, December 7, 2014
  •

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, December 8, 2014
  •

Monday dawned cloudy and cold, with a few snow flurries blowing around, which you may or may not have seen in the video from the plane crash that made the national news - probably about 4 miles from my house, less than 1 mile from the Montgomery County Airpark where the ill-fated jet was headed for landing. Remaining cloudy all day, temps never got any higher than the mid 30s all day. Tonight temps have dropped just below the freezing mark, and a bit of light freezing drizzle has been falling off and on for the past few hours. We are under a winter weather advisory till at least 8 AM Tuesday for this freezing rain/drizzle, possibly some sleet also. Temps will be holding around or just below the freezing mark overnight, but should start to warm in the later morning hours, changing the freezing rain/drizzle over to just plain rain. It might take a while for the frozen patches of pavement to unfreeze, and leave me with very unsure footing that might keep me from going into work for a time in the morning. We shall see. Rain should be falling on Tuesday and Tuesday night, then become more showery on Wednesday with temps rising slowly, into the low 40s by Wednesday. Thursday will be partly cloudy with high temps in the low 40s, lows in the 30s. Friday through Sunday should be partly to mostly sunny, with high temps slowly raising into the upper 40s by Sunday, drying things out. Lows mostly in the 30s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, December 9, 2014

Tuesday began with a bit of iciness, some overnight freezing rain/drizzle that amounted only to a trace. Gradual warmingn changed the frozen precipitation to unfrozen precipitation, with rain wiping out the iciness by mid-late morning as temps rose through the 30s into the low 40s by the evening. The rain mostly fell during the morning hours. Clouds remained, though they did lift somewhat by evening. Clouds will stay around as a complex coastal low with a few centers of concentrated energy continue to effect our area most of this week. Temperatures will be moderate, mostly in the 40s, with lows in the 30s, and a threat of more rain, and possibly even snow showers on Thursday morning on the wraparound action from the second LOW that has yet to pass our area from the south. Mostly sunny skies with highs in the low-mid 40s and lows in the upper 20s to mid 30s should take hold on Friday and then through the upcoming weekend.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, December 11, 2014

Thursday was blustery and cold, with a bit of a surprise - snow flurries, mostly during the middle of the day. Nothing measurable, merely conversational with no stickage in this area, but elsewhere a bit of a different story. Gradually these conditions will be lessening, tomorrow is our last day with possible flurries, still breezy, but slowly backing off. Temps will be up around 40 with mostly cloudy skies but some sun, and increasing sun each day through the weekend. By the weekend we should see high temps in the mid 40s, with lows mostly in the 20s. The weekend should be mostly sunny, with lighter winds.

Saturday was a bit less blustery and cold, as temperatures rose into the mid 40s after a brief time in the early AM below freezing. Sun was out most of the day. Temps have been slow to drop this evening/early this Sunday morning, only in the mid 30s right now. Probably will lower to just above freezing by the time sunrise comes on the scene in a few hours. Sunday and Monday should be sunny and a bit milder, highs in the upper 40s on Sunday, around 50 on Monday, lows mostly in the upper 20s or lower 30s. Tuesday should be a bit more cloudy, similar temps, with a 30 POP for showers during the day as a weak frontal system passes on through. The rest of the week through Friday should be sunny-partly cloudy with highs in the mid-upper 40s and lows in the low 30s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, December 14, 2014
  •

Sunday was a mostly cloudy, milder day that has persisted late into the evening and early this Monday morning as temperatures are still falling through the 40s.. Probably will only hit the mid 30s by sunrise. Should have the sun return on Monday, with highs in the upper 40s. Clouding up a bit Monday night, lows in the 30s, then a 60 POP for showers on Tuesday with highs in the mid 40s. Wednesday through Friday should be partly to mostly sunny, with high temps in the 40s on Wednesday then cooling off to the upper 30s/low 40s the rest of the week, lows in the 30s on Tuesday then down into the 20s the rest of the week. The weekend looks to be turning cloudy and possibly stormy, seasonably cold with a chance of rain or snow - still a bit iffy on that forecast this far out.

  •

Monday was a partly cloudy, even milder day than yesterday that has however cooled off more than last night, as temps have dropped through the upper 30s and headed for the low or mid 30s by sunrise under partly cloudy then cloudy skies. A cold front will be approaching from the west on Tuesday with resultant clouds and a 70 POP for showers in the afternoon, 40 POP in the evening. High temps will be in the upper 40s, lows dropping into the 30s overnight after the showers pass on by. The weekend looks like we have some chances for snow, temps in the 20s and 30s, we shall see how that develops in the next few days. Too far out right now to tell for sure.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, December 17, 2014

Wednesday was cloudy early with a bit of drizzle and fog overnight, then the sun came back and temps rose into the low 50s. Tonight with the mostly clear skies the temps have dropped into the mid 30s, and should be around or slightly below freezing by sunrise. Thursday and Friday should be cooler with partly cloudy skies and high temps in the low 40s, lows in the upper 20s. The weekend looks like a bit of rain under cloudy skies on Saturday with temps in the upper 30s to low 40s, then Saturday night a 60 POP for a bit of snow, lows in the 30s. Sunday just cloudy with high temps in the low 40s, then sunny to partly cloudy for the early week period of Christmas week, highs in the 40s, lows mostly in the 30s. A first glance at the weather for Christmas looks to be warm on Christmas Eve into Christmas Day with a possible drenching rainstorm, then sharply colder right after Christmas into the weekend. Very uncertain this far out, that is the first take at a possible holiday scenario for our area.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, December 18, 2014

Thursday was mostly cloudy and cold, as temps were around the freezing mark to start and only rose into the upper 30s by mid-afternoon. Temps late this evening/early this Friday morning have once again dropped to very near the freezing mark, and should be in the upper 20s by sunrise Friday. Mostly sunny skies on Friday and through the weekend, with highs in the seasonably chilly low 40s, lows in the upper 20s. It looks like a rainy pre-Christmas week from Monday through Wednesday Christmas Eve, with high temps in the 40s on Monday and Tuesday and upper 40s on Wednesday. A 40 POP for rain on Monday increases to a 60 POP for rain by Wednesday. Christmas Day looks to be sunny, however, with high temps in the 40s and lows in the upper 20s. I think it will also be dry and seasonable on Friday also. Not much of a chance for a White Christmas this year.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, December 21, 2014

Sunday was partly cloudy and seasonable for most of the day. Temps maxed out in the low 40s. This evening temps have dropped thru the 30s, and into the upper 20s early this Monday morning. We might drop off a bit but clouds are streaming north from a storm in the SE US that will give us rain on Monday, with possibly some sleet and/or freezing rain mixed in. The precipitation should not start till late morning/mid day, but last the rest of the day. Temps will probably hold in the upper 30s. Rain will become intermittent on Tuesday with high temps in the mid 40s, then get heavier on Christmas Eve with warming temps into the 50s, with some rumbles of thunder possible. Winds should be on the increase also. Clearing skies for Christmas Day with highs in the 40s, and it should persist with sunny, seasonable weather into Friday. So it doesn't look like a White Christmas this year.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Christmas Eve Wednesday, December 24, 2014
  •

Christmas Eve Wednesday was a cloudy, damp, foggy, rainy day, particularly in the morning. Temps started out in the 40s in the morning hours but rose into the 50s by the afternoon and evening. I had to go to work for most of the day, but with light traffic I had an easy morning commute despite a steady light to moderate rain with considerable road spray. Only a few hundredths inches of rain fell after the noon hour, though fog kept up under light winds most of the PM hours till late evening when the winds picked up as the cold front finally drew near. Some intense showers and even some thundershowers were found out to my west in the mountains of western VA and West Virginia this evening, but so far they have either broken up or gone elsewhere. A bit of light rain out there about an hour ago, but nothing significant. Christmas Day should turn sunny after early morning clouds, with high temps in the low 50s. Thursday night should be clear and colder, with lows in the 30s. Friday and Saturday should be mostly sunny and still mild, with high temps around 50, lows in the 30s. Perhaps another round of rain may start to come in on Sunday, and linger into the first part of next week just prior to the New Year coming. I have heard a colder pattern will be coming in with the new year later next week, with high temps holding in the 30s and lows down in the 20s. We shall see!
