Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, September 28, 2014
  •
Sunday was sunny and warm, but not quite as warm as Saturday as we only reached the upper 70s today.  The morning low was about a degree warmer than Saturday's min.  Tonight the temps have dropped into the low 60s and probably will only drop to the upper 50s by sunrise. Cloudy skies overnight will also hinder the temperature from dropping as much as it has the past few days. Monday should be cloudy with highs in the upper 70s, then cloudy again Monday night with lows around 60.  Tuesday partly cloudy with highs in the upper 70s and then Tuesday night after midnight there is a 30 POP for showers as we get a weak frontal passage. Wednesday and Thursday should see partly to mostly sunny skies with highs in the low 70s and lows in the low 50s.  Friday sees a bit of a warm up and increasing chances for showers, about a 30 POP, with clouds and a 50 POP for showers on Saturday, clearing off on Sunday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, September 29, 2014

Monday was mostly cloudy and not as warm with really light winds, a bit muggy with light showers in the area in the evening but mostly all to my south and east with nothing measureable here at my station. Temps are holding in the mid 60s so far this evening/early Tuesday morning, with low 60s about as good as we are going to get by sunrise. Tuesday should be sunny and warm, with highs in the upper 70s to finish out September on a tranquil note. Actually though there is a 30 POP for showers Tuesday night, so we might get to add a bit to my below normal precip total for the month before it ends at midnight.  Then a bit cooler and partly cloudy on Wednesday and Thursday with highs in the low 70s and lows in the low to mid 50s. By Friday another front will be coming through, a bit stronger this time, with a 50 POP for showers and even possibly a thundershower, and a 60 POP for showers on Saturday with temps cooling off late into the 50s. Sunday should be sunny and cooler, with highs in the upper 60s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, September 30, 2014
  •
Tuesday was partly cloudy and warmer than Monday with light winds once again till the mid-evening hour, when I got hit with a semi-surprise thunderstorm between about 2130 and 2200. My VP2 gauge must be partially blocked, as the rain is still dripping through slowly and still accumulating, even though the rain has been over for several hours now.  Temps reached the mid 70s on this last day of September, after a mild AM low of 63.6°. My low for the day was a rain-cooled value of 62.0 at midnight.  Probably won't get lower than about 60° by sunrise, with fog possibly forming. Partly cloudy, a 20 POP for an isolated shower in the morning, on Wednesday with high temps in the mid 70s. Similar temps on Thursday with partly cloudy skies but no chance of rain. Lows in the 50s. Friday and Friday night should see a 60-70 POP for showers as a stronger cold front approaches the area, highs again in the mid 70s.  Over the weekend it should be nice and fall-like, sunny with highs in the low 60s on Saturday, upper 60s on Sunday and Monday. Lows will be in the mid 40s on Saturday and Sunday night, then 50s thereafter. Temps should slowly moderate into the low 70s early next week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, October 1, 2014
  •
Wednesday was cloudy and a bit foggy early, then partly cloudy and mild in the afternoon, a bit muggy though with dew points mostly in the low 60s. Tonight the temps have fallen through the 60s into the upper 50s early this Thursday morning. Areas of fog very probable overnight, temps dropping into the mid 50s. Thursday should be sunny after the early morning fog/clouds burn off, with high temps around 70.  Lows Thursday night under clouds in the 50s. Patchy drizzle possible on Friday with high temps under partly cloudy skies in the 70s. Showers likely Friday night with the passage of a strong Midwest cold front, a 70 POP.  Over the weekend clear nights and sunny days, with highs in the upper 60s on Saturday and low 60s on Sunday, lows in the 40s both nights, possibly dropping into the upper 30s on Sunday morning, depending on how well we clear out - really clear skies radiate the heat better and give us cooler/colder nights. We don't seem to get them as often these days compared to many years ago. One of the side affects of our Global Warming trends.

Thursday was partly cloudy and still a bit muggy, but at least not too warm. Temps this evening/early morning Friday have been slow to drop, still in the low 60s. An 80 POP for showers (and maybe even a thundershower) on Friday evening/overnight. Showers winding down on Saturday, highs in the upper 60s as cooler air filters in. Clear and cool Saturday night, lows in the low-mid 40s. Sunny and cooler Sunday, with a high temperature predicted to be no more than about 60°. Monday should be sunny with high temps in the upper 60s. Upper 60s to lower 70s should be the rule for most of the rest of the week, some chance (30-40 POP) for showers mid-week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, October 3, 2014
  •
Friday was cloudy, damp and cool, as temps remained stuck in the 60s all day. Brief light rain showers fell mid-evening. More out there, scattered and light. Temps early this Saturday morning in the mid 60s.  There is a 70 POP for numerous showers overnight, but looking at the radar these showers have moved off to my north and east, and continue on that path so I don't think we are going to get any more rain out of this frontal passage. Partly Cloudy skies on Saturday morning should yield to sunny skies in the afternoon, with high temps in the upper 60s.  Cooling off nicely Saturday night under clear skies, lows overnight should drop to around 40. That would be the coldest night of the season so far, it remains to be seen if we will get that low or not. Sunday should be sunny and cool, with high temps in the low 60s. Sunday night should be clear and cool, lows in the low 40s. Monday should be sunny and a tad warmer, highs in the upper 60s. Lows Monday night in the 40s, some clouds, then on Tuesday partly to mostly cloudy skies and a 30 POP for showers by the afternoon.

Saturday was sunny and cooler after some early morning clouds and left-over humidity and mild temps. Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, October 5, 2014
  •
Sunday was sunny and cooler, our coolest day of the fall season (so far), esp with our first morning minimum temperature in the 30s. Might have had frost, not sure, I was sleeping. Stayed cool all day and barely got over 60 by mid-afternoon. Already back down in the 40s after spending the earlier evening hours in the 50s under clear skies. We might make it into the 30s by sunrise, but I think we may only reach around 40°. Warmer southerly breezes on Monday should get out temps about 10° warmer than Sunday up around 70 or in the low 70s under partly cloudy skies. Milder Monday evening with more clouds, lows in the low 50s. Tuesday temps once again up around 70 but with mostly cloudy conditions, and a 40 POP for showers, mostly in the PM hours. In the evening a 50 POP for showers, lows in the 50s. Sunny and nice on Wednesday and Thursday with high temps in the mid-upper 60s and lows in the 40s. A 40-50 POP for showers on Friday and Saturday, with high temps in the upper 60s. Sunny and seasonable on Sunday, highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, October 6, 2014
  •
Monday was sunny and milder after one more cool morning, temps maxed out just over the 70 mark. Clouds have come in, showers are in the area, and this week looks like alternate periods of clouds and showers, sun and dry conditions. Temps will be moderate, mostly around 70 by day and 50s by night early in the week, cooling off at the end of the week with highs in the low 60s, lows in the 40s. A 40 POP for showers on Tuesday, then sunny on Wednesday and Thursday, then more showers (40-50 POP) on Friday and into the weekend.

I made an error in my precipitation amount last Friday. I had just cleaned my VP2 gauge before the rain hit on Friday night, so I got lazy and just took the VP2 amount from that night. I didn't go out and empty the cocorahs gauge till tonight, and found the VP2 gauge had gotten clogged again (lots more leaf litter this time of year) and there was some water backed up in it. The 4 inch cocorahs gauge had 0.18" in it, which is actually more inline with many of the area cocorahs stations in Montgomery County so I am changing the 0.06" amount from last Friday to 0.18". Data below reflects this new amount. Sorry about that.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, October 8, 2014
  •
Wednesday was mostly sunny, milder as temps rose into the 70s. Still clear tonight, temps have fallen into the mid 50s early Thursday morning. Temps are predicted to lower to the mid 40s sunrise. Another sunny, mild day on Thursday with temps once again reaching up into the 70s, probably low 70s but with increasing clouds in the afternoon and clouds predominating Thursday evening with a 30 POP for showers late, probably after midnight. Friday should be cloudy and cooler, with max temps in the 60s, and a 50 POP for showers developing.  The weekend through Sunday looks continued cloudy and cool, with highs in the low 60s and lows in the low-mid 50s, and a 50-60 POP for continued showers, off and on, not a total washout by any means. And Columbus Day Monday should be partly to mostly sunny, warming up into the 70s once again. Just a one day rain-free window however, as showers are expected to return on Tuesday and continue into Wednesday at least. Definitely a damp pattern, one we haven't seen in a while as a stalled frontal boundary with pulses of LOW pressure running along it keep us generally wet and cool for the next several days.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, October 9, 2014
  •
Thursday was partly cloudy to cloudy, a bit cooler than yesterday with high temps in the upper 60s after lows in the upper 40s. Tonight we have dropped into the mid 50s. Rain chances are variable but they exist most of the next several days. A stalled front with LOWS travelling along it will keep us in an unsettled pattern through most of next week with only minor breaks. Possibility exists of a more major storm developing on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week - will see how that develops. There is an 80 POP for afternoon rain developing on Friday, a 100 POP for light rain Friday night, then a 50 POP for mostly morning showers on Saturday. Temps will mostly be in the 60s, lows in the 50s. Might be rain-free on Columbus Day Monday but still mostly cloudy.  Right now the rain looks to return Tuesday and not clear out and up till Thursday with mostly 50 POPs for showers on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, October 10, 2014
  •
Friday was cloudy, damp and cooler than yesterday with high temps in the low 60s after lows in the mid 50s. Spotty drizzle/sprinkles occasionally fell during the day that was not measurable. Tonight clouds persist and showers are in the forecast for the overnight but right now the radar is showing it falling elsewhere.  This weekend is quite variable in its outlook, with the threat of rain coming and going.  Milder temps should be coming in by Sunday or Columbus Day Monday, then more definitive rain chances as we start the new work week on Tuesday.  I am very busy and must get to bed early tonight as I must arise early Sat to work at a festival in nearby Bethesda as a weather observer (measuring any rain that falls).  More details on that and the rest of the 3 day weekend weather will be coming with tomorrow's report.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, October 11, 2014
  •

Saturday was cloudy, damp and cool with morning rain. I had to take rainfall readings at the Taste of Bethesda outdoor festival from 7 AM to the end of the festival at 4 PM. I somehow managed to get up early enough to get onto location by 0653. It was raining at the time. I measured 0.13" from 7 AM - 4 PM - well under the threshold of 0.33" so no insurance coverages were enacted. I rested in my car after setting up the rain gauge at 7 AM till the festival opened up around 11 AM, around the time when the rain stopped. Plenty of interesting food vendors, several stages of musical entertainment of all varieties, but I watched the Wisconsin Badger game at the Rockbottom brewpub restaurant right in the middle of the festival. Just remained cloudy for the rest of the festival. It was cool, with temperature holding around 50 in the morning rain, and raising into the mid-upper 50s for the rest of the day. This evening a gradual improvement as clouds lifted and thinned out, with temps falling back through the 50s into the upper 40s now in the early morning hours of Sunday. Sunday should be cloudy early then become partly cloudy in the afternoon with high temps in the low 60s. Columbus Day Monday should be cloudy with a 40-50 POP for showers during the day and in the evening. Warmer temps on Tuesday with partly cloudy skies, highs up in the 70s. Lows in the 50s. Wednesday rain chances increase (60 POP) with even a chance for thunderstorms, highs once again in the 70s. Sunny, seasonable weather should follow for the rest of the week, with high temps in the 60s and lows in the 40s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, October 14, 2014
  •
Tuesday started out cool and very foggy, as we were under a dense fog advisory till 10 AM. The fog lifted before that, in fact before I started my drive in to the office around 0830. Clouds gradually lifted, winds started to increase from the Southerly direction (whether S or SW or SE), and temps climbed into the upper 70s with dew points into the upper 60s under partly cloudy skies during the afternoon. Clouds have come back in the evening, some showers around but nothing falling at the station that was measurable. Temps have remained warm, holding in the low 70s early this Wednesday morning.  Numerous showers to my west will gradually make their way in here, but are currently moving south to north and will take a while to get to our area. Wednesday will see numerous showers (near 100 POP) with scattered thunderstorms also possible from late morning through the afternoon into the evening. Temps will hold in the low 70s despite the extensive cloud cover. Flood advisories may be posted for possible heavy downpours ponding water in key locations that may lead to flooding conditions in some areas. Showers may continue Wednesday evening into the overnight, temps gradually cooling off a bit into the 60s, then a few scattered showers possible Thursday under partly cloudy skies and high temps in the upper 60s.  Friday mostly sunny skies should be returning, highs in the upper 60s, lows mostly in the 50s. Over the weekend a gradual cooldown will progress both Saturday and Sunday, high temps mid 60s on Saturday then low 60s to possibly upper 50s on Sunday and then progressing along into Monday. Lows should finally getting back down into the more seasonable 40s by Sunday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, October 15, 2014
  •
Wednesday started out warm and muggy, with occasional showers overnight that became more numerous during the morning through mid-afternoon hours. Severe weather was around the region, with flood watches/warnings, severe thunderstorm warnings, and even a few tornado warnings posted at times. I observed none of that at my station, at least during waking hours.  By late afternoon the precipitation had moved on to the east, but it remained cloudy through obs tonight and into the early morning hours of Thursday at the present time. Temperatures are cooling off a bit, and dew points are slowly dropping off also, into the 50s. Low 50s may be reached by sunrise, possibly areas of fog. Mostly cloudy, 30 POP for showers, highs in the upper 60s for Thursday. Clearing off on Friday, highs again in the upper 60s. Lows mostly in the 50s. Saturday starting to cool off, under sunny skies, with highs in the mid 60s.  Saturday night temps start to really drop off, into the 40s.  Then the cool air really arrives, with highs on Sunday only in the mid 50s, lows in the upper 30s. Monday through Wednesday should see a continuance of this cooler temperature pattern with high temps holding in the mid 50s and lows in the upper 30s to low 40s, under sunny to partly cloudy skies.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, October 22, 2014

Wednesday was cloudy, cool, and wet with mostly AM steady, light rain.  With the stable conditions of a coastal LOW pumping in steady rain with persistent easterly flow, the temps did not vary more than a few degrees, the barometer pressure did not fluctuate a lot during the day, and dew points remained pretty constant around 50°. Temps early on this Thursday morning are around 50 and probably won't go down much under cloudy skies by sunrise, maybe in the upper 40s. Clouds should persist on Thursday during the daytime hours, with highs into the low 60s, with good breezes at times. Clearing out on Thursday evening and during the overnight, with lows in the 40s.  Friday through the weekend and into early next week, we should see mostly sunny skies each day, with temps in the low 60s on Friday, gradually rising to the upper 60s by early next week.  Lows should mostly be in the 40s. So we should be headed for a significant dry spell.
