Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, August 29, 2014

Friday was another cooler, drier day - very pleasant.  Looks like the last nice one in a while. Dew pts stayed in the 50s most of the day. They will be going up along with the air temperature as we get into the Labor Day weekend. Temps are staying a bit elevated this evening/early Sat morning in the mid 60s, low 60s by sunrise is the best we can hope for, but odds are favoring mid 60s actually with patchy fog possible - haven't observed any yet however. Saturday should see increasing temps into the mid 80s with rising dew points. Lows mostly in the 60s to around 70 for the foreseeable future. At least it should be sunny on Saturday - perhaps a few clouds scattered around.  Sunday sees more clouds than sun, very warm though from the little sun we do get, up into the upper 80s, a 50 POP for showers/storms. Sunday night gives us the best chance for rain with a 70 POP for showers/storms. Monday there still is a 50 POP for showers/storms with high temps once again in the upper 80s. Tuesday should still see a 40 POP for showers, partly cloudy skies with high temps in the low 90s. Might now be the hottest day of the period. The rest of the week looks to be mostly to partly sunny, with high temps in the upper 80s as we head well into September.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, August 30, 2014

Saturday was a bit warmer, more humid as the day progressed, and cloudier, mostly of the high variety. Temps are holding this evening/early Sunday morning in the 70s, and by sunrise we probably won't drop below 70. Clouds and dampness should predominate on Sunday with a 50 POP for showers/ storms with highs in the upper 80s.. Showers likely Sunday night (70 POP) and mild, temps holding in the low 70s, then a 40 POP for showers/storms on Labor Day Monday, with high temps once again in the upper 80s - shower possibilities continue Monday evening(40 POP) with lows around 70. Tuesday looks to be sunny and hot, and very well may be our hottest day of the week and over the past month or so - highs may reach the low 90s. Assuming we hold below 90 on Sunday I will go through a second straight August with no max temps of 90 or more.  If it hits 90 or greater on Tuesday that would be the first day with a max temp of 90 or greater since 91 was reached back on July 23.  But I digressed there, the rest of the upcoming week should see sunny skies with max temps in the mid 80s, lows in the 60s. It should be quite pleasant most of the upcoming week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, August 31, 2014
  •

Sunday dawned sunny and quite warm, as I had my warmest min temp of the month at 72.7° (73 when rounded). Forecasted high temps on Sunday morning for the afternoon were into the low 90s, so I thought my streak of no 90+ days during all of August was in serious jeopardy. It hit 90 at National Airport by noontime, but I was still at 83 at the time. But I was climbing and hit 88.3° twice during the afternoon, around 1530 then again around 1630. But a saving line of showers and storms with a nice cloud deck ahead of it put a lid on the rising temps and I started to cool off, down into the mid 70s by early evening along with light rain showers around 1815. I did not hear any thunder, but severe storms struck elsewhere in the region with power outages, flooding rains, and lightning strikes.  Temps have remained in the 70s through the evening/early Monday morning hours as we head into the new month of September.  Monday should be hot and humid with a 30 POP for showers/ storms but it might stay in the upper 80s and once again not make that 90 mark. Continued muggy conditions through Monday evening/overnight into Tuesday with lows in the 70s and a continued 30 POP for showers. Tuesday looks to be the hottest day of the week, with highs in the low 90s, and a 40 POP for showers/storms scattered about the region. Lows Tuesday night in the low 70s. The rest of the week looks sunny to partly cloudy, with high temps in the upper 80s, lows in the upper 60s. Saturday should see a 40 POP for showers/ storms as a cold front finally makes its way through the area, highs in the upper 80s. Sunday should be clearing and cooling off with high temps in the mid-upper 70s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, September 1, 2014
  •

Monday started out the new month of September with Labor Day heat and humidity, though at least still no 90 max temperature! Might very well come tomorrow. We had some clouds at times today, and in the mid-afternoon a few random rolls of thunder that got my dog Flash a bit upset and wanting some protection from his Daddy.  We also had a brief rain interlude around 1330, but with my Davis VP2 not functioning well and shutting down randomly on occasion, I am losing some data on the display that I mostly can get back from the data logger.  Temps once again have held above 70 this evening/early morning Tuesday. Probably will have another 70+ min on Tuesday to go along with a probable 90+ max in the hot sun. A 40 POP for showers/storms Tuesday evening, as a front passes through, which will cool us slightly the rest of the week, but mostly lower the dew point temps. Highs on Wednesday into the weekend should be in the upper 80s, with sun and drier conditions. Lows should be in the 60s after our gross 70s mins tonight and tomorrow night. On Saturday there is a 50 POP for showers/storms ahead of a stronger front, then a 40 POP for showers on Sunday and noticeably cooler with highs in the 70s and lows down into the 50s. Monday even cooler with highs in the lower 70s - ah a taste of fall coming hopefully!

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, September 2, 2014
  •

Tuesday was back to work, and back to another day of heat and humidity- and I finally broke my streak as I hit a high temp of 89.5 which rounds to 90° - as you may recall the last time I hit 90 was a 90.9 reading back on July 23. Sun dominated early, but the clouds built up in the increasingly unstable air and we got our first thunderstorm just after 4 PM when I had my most intense rain for the day (see below for details). Another storm hit as I was heading home, with flooding rains in the usual spots that flood, and an interesting ride home, where I was on the edge of the heavier rain but could look to the west and see the sun through the rain clouds and rain shafts. Also observed many spectacular cloud to ground lightning strikes on the ride home, also in Gaithersburg about a mile south of home, behind me was a nice rainbow in the rapidly departing thundershower. It has remained muggy and warm, with temps hovering in the low-mid 70s this evening/early Wednesday morning. A front of sorts is passing through, and tomorrow should be a tad drier and cooler, with little chances for any rain. Temps in the upper 80s, lows in the upper 60s Wednesday overnight.  Highs on Thursday and Friday should be in the upper 80s to around 90, lows in the upper 60s, with plenty of sun in clear to partly cloudy skies, somewhat more moderate dew point values. Storm chances increase over the weekend, and there is some promise of cooler weather on the horizon, around Sunday into early next week, highs hoped for in the 70s, lows in the 50s. Having some issues with my VP2 display right now so if some of my data looks funny, it probably is. So bear with me and I hope to work it out soon.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, September 5, 2014
  •

Friday was quite warm and humid once again, reaching into the upper 80s for highs after an overnight that only dropped into the low 70s. Tonight it is muggy and warm, temps holding in the mid 70s through the early morning hours of Saturday.  Temps will remain hot through Saturday, with highs of 90 and but lows Saturday night dropping well down into the 60s.  There is a good chance for showers/storms on Saturday afternoon and evening (70 POP) as a more powerful cold front pushes through the area.  Cooling off from then on, highs around 80 on Sunday, then mostly upper 70s to low 80s for highs next week, with a lot of clouds around, and a 30-40 POP for showers most every day starting on Sunday and running through the whole week. Actually rain chances look to increase to a 50 POP Thursday and Friday. So next week could potentially be a wet one, but the showers look to be scattered about, and it certainly won't be raining all the time, in fact some days I probably will miss all the action and be dry for the day. But at least the temps will be moderate and not so hot.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, September 6, 2014
  •

Saturday was quite warm and humid once again, reaching 90 (rounding up the actual 89.6 reading) for the second time this week.. It doesn't look like we will be getting any more 90 max temps for a while, the upcoming week looks to be cooler, with temps only reaching the mid 80s tops. Anyway, Saturday was sunny and hot through early afternoon, then clouds increased as a strong cold front approached our area from the NW. A building line of showers and storms moved into the area, but somehow I missed the flooding, heavy rains (NWS had issued a flash flood warning in addition to a severe thunderstorm warning) and severe storms that other parts of the county and region received.  Radar seemed to indicate a "can't miss situation" but somehow it veered away from my immediate location at the last minute and hit the areas just a few miles to the south of me. We did get to drop the temps in the late afternoon and early evening, from the mid 80s to the mid 70s.  Temperatures has since dropped through the rest of the 70s and down into the mid 60s at the present time, early on Sunday morning.  Still remaining cloudy as best I can tell. Should reach down into the low 60s by sunrise in a few hours. Partly cloudy on Sunday, not too bad a day, highs in the upper 70s, a noticeable cooldown from Saturday. The week ahead will be partly to mostly cloudy, temps starting out in the upper 70s for highs, warming gradually up to mid 80s for highs on Thursday, then cooling down into the 70s by Friday and Saturday once again. Lows will be around 60 on Monday to the upper 60s by Thursday. There will be chances of showers/storms all week, increasing with time, from about a 30 POP on Tuesday to a 50 POP by Thursday when another cold front should finally pass through the area. High temps by Saturday may only be in the low 70s, hints of our impending fall coming soon.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, September 9, 2014
  •

Tuesday remained cool and mostly cloudy for the better part of the day, but clouds thinned and by sunset the sun was finding its way to our area at least a little bit. Dew point temps are slowly rising, as temps hold in the upper 60s as we head into the early hours of Wednesday. More sun than clouds tomorrow and should warm up a bit more to around the 80 mark after a sunrise temp in the low 60s. Milder on Wednesday night as winds shift from E to S, and then on Thursday rise even more into the upper 80s, with some hot spots in the region topping the 90 mark. But it depends on how much clouds come in ahead of a strong cold front coming from the Midwest, along with a 60 POP for showers and possible strong storms on Thursday afternoon and a 70 POP for showers/storms on Thursday evening. Partly sunny skies and cooler temps on Friday with highs in the low 70s, lows in the 50s overnight. On Saturday 70s temps continue, but through mostly cloudy skies and a 50 POP for showers. Sunday through Tuesday should be sunny to partly cloudy, high temps in the low-mid 70s, lows overnight into the low 50s, possibly upper 40s. Should be a nice second half to the coming early fall weekend.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, September 10, 2014

Wednesday warmed up a bit from Tuesday, but still stayed below 80 and for that I was grateful. Clouds predominated for most of the day, though they definitely thinned out in the PM, and some faint sun came through at times. Temps this evening have been dropping slowly through the 70s and probably will make the upper 60s by sunrise.  Thursday is supposed to be our hottest day of the week, and hottest day by far for a while, as cooler air rushes in behind this cold front passing through our area on Thursday. It should be up around 90° on Thursday afternoon, with a 60 POP for storms/showers during the day, and a 40 POP in the evening, then clearing off and drying out overnight, with lows dropping into the low 60s. Friday should be partly cloudy and cooler, with highs in the mid to upper 70s, lows in the upper 50s. Saturday looks to be in the low 70s with clouds and a 50 POP for showers. Thereafter we should be in the low-mid 70s by day, low-mid 50s by night, under partly to mostly sunny skies and a bit of a hint of fall in the air.  That should extend well into next week. Perhaps a slight chance (30 POP) of a shower on Monday as a reinforcing cold front moves on through to keep us comfortably cool into the midweek.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, September 11, 2014
  •

Thursday warmed up quite a bit from Wednesday, with the dew point climbing also. Mostly cloudy, threatening towards evening but rain showers fell elsewhere in the region. Temps reached the muggy mid 80s, dew points into the mid 70s. That should be the last day like that for a while, hopefully for the rest of the year but that remains to be seen.  Temps have dropped into the upper 60s so far early this Friday morning, and should be in the low 60s by morning as we start to dry out. Temps over the next several days will be in the 70s at first, starting tomorrow with mid 70s, then even 60s for highs over a showery (50 POP) Saturday, and low 70s on Sunday and into early next week. We may have another 50 POP showery day early next week, either on Monday or Tuesday.  Lows will mostly be in the 50s after tonight (Thursday night) with possibly some 40s on Sunday night and/or early next week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, September 13, 2014

Saturday was a cool, cloudy day with light early afternoon rain. Sun came out a bit eventually by late afternoon and we had a mostly clear evening. Temps held in the upper 50s to lower 60s through most of the day, but in the clear skies of the evening and dropping dew points, temps started falling through the 50s and now early on this Sunday morning the temps are in the low 50s. Saturday was our coolest day for several months, going back to sometime in May. We should drop down to around 50° by sunrise.  A pleasant Sunday of sun, low dew points with temps in the low 70s should work well with the usual football and hopefully a cookout in the backyard in the early evening. Temps should drop down to around 50 on Sunday overnight. Monday should see a bit of a warm up, into the upper 70s under partly cloudy skies but with increasing clouds late in the afternoon. Monday evening should see a 60 POP for showers as a reinforcing cold front should be passing through.  We should clear out late and have a sunny, cool, pleasant week thereafter. Temps should mostly be around 70 for highs and 50 for lows all week under sunny to partly cloudy skies with low dew point temperatures.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, September 15, 2014

Monday was another beautiful day, another cool morning in the upper 40s but then a bit milder in the afternoon (low 70s) and esp. this evening as we slowly drop through the 60s and the dew point creeps up to around the 60 mark.  Cloudy now, we have a 30 POP for showers overnight and on the Tuesday forenoon, but radar right now shows most all of the action well to my west and north and not heading this way in particular. Tuesday should see our warmest day of the week with high temps in the upper 70s and partly cloudy skies by afternoon. The rest of the week looks to be turning cooler, under sunny to partly cloudy skies, with highs in the low 70s to around 70 and lows in the low 50s to upper 40s. I saw one model run for a week from today that has our area in the 50s for high temps that will really be bringing in the first day of fall in fine style if it pans out.  Except for the slight chance for rain overnight and on Tuesday morning, the next week looks pretty dry.

  •
Thursday was another nice day, a bit warmer morning down to the mid 50s, then temps maxed out in the mid 70s once again under partly cloudy skies with the dew point temperature in the upper 50s to very low 60s.  There was a short wave passing through the area according to my friend Ray, and some spots in the region saw some light showers, but not here. Tonight temps have fallen through the 60s into the 50s once again, it should bottom out in the low 50s by sunrise Friday.  Friday will be partly cloudy and a bit cooler, with highs in the low 70s, lows in the low 50s. Over the weekend a warmup, upper 70s on Saturday, low 80s on Sunday with a small chance of an isolated shower on Sunday afternoon but just a 20-30 POP on that and the showers should be quite widely scattered. Cooling off with the new week a bit, low 70s Monday, upper 60s on Tuesday and Wednesday (at least) with lows in the upper 40s, but with no sign of much needed rain for the foreseeable future.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, September 20, 2014

Saturday was a sunny, warmer day as high temps approached the 80 mark. Tomorrow we should go over that mark unfortunately. Temps this evening/early Sunday morning have dropped through the 60s and are now in the damp upper 50s with dew points just below that a bit.   Sunday will be even warmer, high temps reaching as high as the mid 80s, with a 30 POP for showers/           storms as a cold front approaches from the midwest. The evening should still have that 30 POP for showers/storms, temps slowly sliding off into the 50s by morning.  The upcoming week should see sunny skies, more fall-like weather, with high temps in the low 70s most of the week, lows in the upper 40s on Monday night, then low-mid 50s the rest of the week. It still looks to remain dry as all of the action will be either well south of our area or well north.

Temps this evening have fallen through the 50s into the low 50s; we should be in the upper 40s by sunrise on Wednesday. A 70 POP for showers on Wednesday night and Thursday, then a 50 POP for showers on Thursday night. Temps will be in the 50s by night, around 70 tops by day. It looks like more rain may fall the closer to the coast you get.  Friday should clear out with highs up in the mid 70s, then over the weekend we may be in the upper 70s to around 80, with lows in the mid-upper 50s . We should cool off a bit early next week, but remain dry for the most part.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, September 24, 2014
  •
Wednesday was cool and cloudy, increasingly so as the day wore on, after another early morning in the 40s. A transition day as we prepared for a bit of much needed rain - this evening's meager total (so far) was our first measureable rainfall since September 13. Barometric pressure remained high all day, keeping the storm from making much headway into my immediate area.  Temps early on this Thursday morning are just now lowering into the upper 50s, and should remain fairly constant overnight under some steady NE breezes off the ocean from the storm. We have an areal flood watch out but as dry as it has been I doubt we will see much if any flooding. The rain should continue overnight off and on into most of the daylight morning hours, ending sometime in the middle of the day as it looks now. Temps should remain in the 60s on Thursday, we may see some sun by mid to late afternoon.  Sunny skies should be returning in full force by Friday, highs in the low 70s, lows in the 50s Friday night, then mid-upper 70s over the weekend on both Saturday and Sunday under continued sunny skies with lows in the 50s. A warm and dry first fall weekend as it appears now. Our next chance for rain appears now to be around Tuesday, as we near the end of the month of September.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, September 25, 2014

Thursday was a cool, damp, rainy day, particularly in the morning hours between 5 am and 9 am when most of the day's rain fell. A pretty, steady light rain with temps in the upper 50s/lower 60s with light winds here. We had gone almost 2 weeks since our last measurable rain (back on September 13).  Most of the afternoon and evening remained cloudy with spotty drizzle at times as the coastal storm moved slowly away from us to the northeast. Slow clearing over night, temps holding in the upper 50s now, probably won't cool off much by sunrise on Friday. Clearing out on Friday with sunny skies by afternoon and warmer temps in the low-mid 70s. Lows Friday night in the 50s, high temps under sunny skies over the weekend into the upper 70s to around 80, lows in the 50s to around 60. Remaining dry into the new week, gradually cooling off by midweek with a slight chance of a shower by Wednesday. I believe we will finish out September without much if any more rain to add to our meager totals for the month.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, September 27 2014
  •
Saturday was sunny and warm, reaching up to the 80 mark after an overnight down in the low 50s. Love those greater diurnal ranges we get this time of the year with dropping dew points but still warm sun! Saturday evening/early Sunday morning and we are into the mid 50s headed for low 50s again by sunrise. Sunday should see another sunny and warm day, with highs around 80 or perhaps the low 80s. Clouding up over late Sunday through Tuesday, with a 40 POP for showers as a front approaches the area. Temps will be in the 70s by day and 50s by night.  I don't think it will be a lot of rain if the showers do find my rain gauge at all, so we stand to have a below normal September for rainfall at my location. October begins on Wednesday with sunny skies and a bit cooler temps, with highs in the low 70s and lows in the low 50s. That pattern should maintain the rest of the week through Friday, with a threat of rain on Saturday/over the weekend and further cooling probable.
