What's the Weather Where You are?

Both my desktop and laptop crashed out on me yesterday, so I was not able to send out Monday's report till now (late Tuesday morning) from my office computer. Report will be necessarily shorter than usual, due to time and resource limitations.  So sorry for the delay, my computer guru (Nick) was over last night trying to fix the problems but as of this moment the problems have not been solved. I have a startup repair to solve. Nick will be working with the backup system disk to try and restore things back before this problem started. Nick built my current home desktop system.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, June 30, 2014 (brief and delayed)

Monday was mostly sunny, quite warm, and increasingly more humid as dew points moved up through the 60s into the low 70s. Temperatures through the evening fell slowly through the 80s into the 70s. Tuesday will be much of the same, only hotter, as we probably will hit or exceed the 90 mark. Showers and storm possibilities will be slight and isolated. Wednesday and Thursday look to be quite warm, actually hot, into the low to mid 90s with storm/ shower chances increasing, particularly on Thursday. Friday we may be brushed with the tropical system now off the coast of Florida, which if it becomes a tropical storm will be named Arthur. Still not sure on that, it may go out to sea and give us a sunny, warm and dry day for Independence Day.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, July 1, 2014
  •
Got my computer back and running tonight. I didn't have any rain on Monday, so I finished out the month of June at 3.25".

Tuesday started out July mostly sunny, hot and humid. It was the hottest day of the year (so far). The 91.8 high temp today eclipsed (barely) my previous high temperature for the year of 91.7 on June 18. Dew points were mostly in the 70s all day. Tonight the temperature is really slow to drop; well after midnight and I am still over 80. I probably will only drop into the mid or upper 70s by sunrise. Wednesday and Thursday will be hot and humid once again, under partly cloudy skies with increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms, as a cold front tries to move our way from the midwest. There will be a 60 POP on Wednesday during the day, and a 70 POP for Wednesday night through Thursday night. Highs in the low 90s on Wednesday, upper 80s on Thursday with more clouds. A 50 POP for showers on Friday as tropical storm Arthur passes by our region to the S and E off the Ocean City Maryland coast.  It should yield a beautiful weekend, with highs of 80 on Saturday and low-mid 80s on Sunday under sunny skies and lower dew points, with lows in the upper 50s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, July 2, 2014
  •

Wednesday had a lot of heat, humidity and general unpleasantness with late evening light showers finally working its way into my backyard to chill us down a bit finally. I had the hottest temperature of the year (so far) hitting 94.2 just before 4 pm. Then storms moved into the area a bit later, and I missed the rainfall action, but I did get some cooling breezes dropping the temps down into the low 80s. Finally during the last hour of today, light rain started and has continued past midnight and into the early Thursday morning hour. We should get a bit more rain over the next few hours, but should be dry and muggy (again) by sunrise, with temps somewhere in the 70s. Thursday should be humid and quite warm again, but depending on how much clouds work in during the afternoon, I may top off below 90 for the daily high temperature. Rain showers and storms should be more powerful, rain-wise, with 1-2 inch amounts possible and being hoped for. An 80 POP for showers/storms on Thursday and Thursday evening. Arthur brushes by us late Thursday or Friday morning, with some coastal breezes and rain, heavier towards the  shore to my east. We should clear out by late Friday, and have a great night with lows in the upper 50s. The rest of the holiday weekend looks beautiful, with high temps around 80 on Saturday and in the 80s on Sunday with relatively low humidity. Lows should be in the upper 50s on Saturday night.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, July 3, 2014
  •
I am still struggling with my home computer setup. The hard drive in my desktop is a goner, it is in the process of being replaced with a new 2 TB hard drive, I hope to get it back sometime this weekend. I am on my wife's laptop typing this from the web-based verizon application, where I have some addresses saved but no where near the amount I have stored in my desktop. So I will be missing many of you right now, eventually I hope to forward this on to those I am missing on this first go-around. Nice to have a day off for the Fourth of July, and having the ability to stay up late tonight to watch the Weather Channel and see Hurricane Arthur come ashore in coastal Carolina.

Thursday was not as hot as days earlier this week as I failed to hit a 90 max, but still quite warm and very humid. Had some light showers right after obs last night, but nothing more till some evening light showers fell that were quite inconsequential. Storms hit hard elsewhere, like when I was leaving the office in Silver Spring around 4:30 PM with heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning for my first few miles of the trip home. As I approached Gaithersburg, the rain diminished greatly, and we mostly missed all the heavy action all day.   There are some showers still showing on radar, but unfortunately I am up in the bedroom and my VP2 weather display is not easily accessible to me to look at. I took down all the data for Thursday into my daily journal, but have no data since midnight to report on. Temps have been in the muggy 70s, with dew points in the 70s this evening and continues early this Fourth of July Friday morning.  More showers are predicted for much of Friday morning as Arthur moves north but will be way too far east off the coast to really have much of an effect as it passes by our latitude here in central Maryland. Friday should be clearing out by the afternoon, with highs in the low 80s and drying out, with Friday night clear skies and lows in the low 60s. The weekend looks sunny, with highs in the mid 80s on Saturday and near 90 on Sunday. Lows should mostly be in the 60s. Next week looks very warm to hot, with 90 or greater expected all week, lows in the upper 60s early then 70s later on in the week for daily mins. Sunny to partly cloudy skies, isolated chances at storms/showers in the early part of the week, then scattered chances later on in the week.

The weather underground link to my station data is:

However, with my desktop down right now, I am currently offline and no data will be showing up online. Stay tuned on when my real-time data will be back online.

Thursday's precipitation: 0.10" (LR) 0.08" (VP2) 0.09" Max Rain Rate (MRR) @ 0010

Other data for Thursday is as follows:

High temp 88.3° (1440)
Low temp  70.8° (0538)
Obs temp  72.3°
Peak wind gust 8 NW (1248)
Relative Humidity ranged from a max of 97% (0701) to a low of 65% (1402)
Dew point temperatures ranged from 76° to 70°
Barometric pressure values ranged from 29.98" (2357) to 29.89" (1611)

At midnight obs the temp was 72.3°, Cldy/very light rain, Winds Calm, Pressure at 29.98" and steady, humidity 96%, dew point of 71°.

Currently (0425) I don't have access to my data, but I am sure it is still cloudy, with temps and dew points still in the low 70s, with humidity in the mid 90s, winds calm. pressure probably still around the 29.98" reading from my last obs at midnight.

Radar is showing light, scattered showers moving from the SSW of me in Virginia heading NNE over me and then moving further up the coast. Rain bands from Arthur are still well to my south/southeast in coastal Virginia near Norfolk.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station reports for Independence Day Friday, July 4, 2014

I am still struggling with my home computer setup. Now the theory is that the motherboard and CPU need to be replaced, and my computer expert Nick got those parts on Friday and will be installing them on Saturday. So I hope to be coming to you from my desktop late on Saturday. But tonight I am once again on my wife's laptop typing this.

Friday saw Hurricane Arthur pass well offshore of the Maryland Atlantic beaches, too far away to really exert much significant influence on our weather here in Central Maryland. Breezes kept up for a while on Friday, about the only thing from Arthur that was measurable. Light overnight rain showers gave way to clearing skies, with lowering dew points and very nice temperatures, as high temps remained in the 70s all during the day on Friday, making for a great Fourth! Tonight the temps have dropped through the 60s - probably around 60 right now early on this Saturday morning. Clear skies, dew points in the low 50s should result in a low temp around sunrise on Saturday morning in the mid 50s. Sunny conditions should be the norm for the next several days, with high temps over the weekend in the mid 80s, lows Sat and Sun night in the 60s. e mid-upper 80s, lows in the 60s on Sat and Sun night. Into the new workweek the temps should warm into the 90s for highs, 70 or so for lows. By Wednesday we should see an increased chance for afternoon/ evening showers and thundershowers (40 POP). with highs around 90 under partly to mostly cloudy skies.

Friday's precipitation: 0.18" (LR) 0.18" (VP2) 0.62" Max Rain Rate (MRR) @ 0449

July total precipitation 0.35"
Annual 2014 YTD precipitation total: 31.99"

Other data for Friday is as follows:

High temp 77.0° (1538)
Low temp  63.8° (2358)

Obs temp. 63.8°

Peak wind gust 21 N (1830)

Relative Humidity ranged from a max of 96% (0000) to a low of 43% (1828)
Dew point temperatures ranged from 71° to 51°

Barometric pressure values ranged from 30.18" (2357) to 29.97" (0322)
At midnight obs the temp was 63.8°, Clear, Winds Calm, Pressure at 30.18" and rising, humidity 68%, dew point of 53°.

Currently (0412) I don't have access to my data, but I am sure it is still clear, temps around 60 with dew points in the upper 40s to low 50s.  Relative humidity is probably in the low 70s, winds calm. pressure probably around 30.20" , based on a rising reading from my last obs at midnight.

Radar is probably clear in the region right now. No rain is expected till the middle of the new week upcoming.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, July 5, 2014

I am still struggling with my home computer setup. At least I got it back tonight. But I lost all my files and programs from my old hard drive. So we are rebuilding the new one from scratch.  The biggest thing here is that I have to rebuild my email address book, so I will be missing some of you out there for a while.

Saturday was a beautiful day, sunny skies, continued low dew points, with lows in the 50s in the early morning hours and highs just above the 80° mark recorded late Saturday afternoon. Tonight it is clear, temps have dropped through the 60s and will be once again in the 50s by sunrise, probably around 57 or 58. Sunday should be sunny and warmer, as temps will be approaching 90. Sunny and hot conditions with increasing humidity early in the coming week on Monday and Tuesday, with highs in the 90s and lows around 70.  Thereafter shower/storm chances increase in the warm, muggy SW flow we will be under with probably an approaching cold front into the area by the end of the week.  I am missing my weatherbug program right now, so I am a bit hedgy on the longer range forecast, and also any sort of radar summary for my area.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, July 6, 2014

I am starting to make progress with my home desktop computer setup. Building up this email address book. Filing msgs in newly created folders, etc.  Still need to add more people to this daily wx email. Even got my master data spreadsheet from my friend Lowell earlier on Sunday and have half of June now inputted into it. I have weatherbug re-installed, but a different version that will take some getting used to.

Sunday started out comfortable, with early morning temps in the upper 50s. But it sure warmed up today, well into the 80s, and this evening/early Monday morning has temps still in the mid 70s with dew points creeping up through the 60s. Partly cloudy, hot and humid on Monday and Tuesday, highs of 90 or a bit above, lows around 70 or low 70s, a 30 POP for showers/storms on Tuesday, and then on Wednesday cloudy with a better chance of showers/storms as a front struggles to get through our area. Temps should remain in the 80s on Wed with the greater amounts of cloudiness.  Thursday and Friday should be sunny, drier and more pleasant, with high temps in the 80s, lows in the 60s. Over the weekend humidity comes back as it looks now, with increasing chances for showers and storms once again.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, July 7, 2014

Slow progress today with my home desktop computer setup. Slow building up this email address book. Filing msgs in newly created folders, etc.  Still need to add more people to this daily wx email. I have weatherbug re-installed, but a different version that will take some getting used to. Plus I still need to download and install version 6, as it is the only version that will accept the plus activation code, which allows me to use the plus features, like ad-free windows and historical data retrieval.

Monday started the new work-week out with a hot, more humid day that foreshadows more heat and humidity the next few days. We went over the 90 mark on our max temp for the first time since July 2.  Tonight the temperatures remain elevated, as we just went under the 80 mark a few minutes ago, after midnight early on this Tuesday morning.  We probably will only reach down to the low or mid 70s for our low temps for the overnight around sunrise.  Tomorrow we will be sunny and hot with widely scattered showers/storms possible (40 POP) with high temps up in the mid 90s. Tuesday night will be warm and muggy with lows in the 70s once again. Wednesday will not be quite as hot, highs around 90, with a 50 POP for showers/ storms and the best shot for us to get rain this week. Lows Wednesday night will be in the mid-upper 60s as slightly drier and cooler air moves into the area. Thursday and Friday should be sunny and dry, with high temps in the mid-upper 80s, lows in the 60s. The weekend looks unsettled, with increasing chances for showers/storms, particularly on Sunday, and warmer and more humid conditions returning.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, July 8, 2014
  •
Slow progress today with my home desktop computer setup. Got a new version of Adobe downloaded and running.  Computer speakers now the problem, can't get them to give me anything but a hissing sound. Working with Nick on that. Got a lot more of my June 2014 data finished. A ho-hum month, above normal temps, below normal precipitation. Meanwhile I was exhausted this morning and called in sick - slept all morning, feeling better later.

Tuesday was an even hotter and more humid day than Monday, with temps soaring into the low 90s once again after a high launching pad with the early morning minimum in the 70s. We had a thunderstorm around 1830-1900 this evening, a widespread severe storm outbreak. I fared better than a lot as my power did not go out with only a modest amount of rain and wind. Tonight the rain-cooled atmosphere stayed about the same. temp-wise, in the upper 60s with dew points about the same. Overnight I doubt the temperature will change much. Currently mostly cloudy out there with a broken strato-cu sky. Wednesday we do it all again, and may hit over 90 again with a 40-50 POP for showers/storms, quite possibly another severe storm outbreak again. Slowly improving conditions Wednesday night, lows dipping into the 60s under clearing skies.  On Thursday and Friday we should see sunny and less humid skies, with highs in the mid-upper 80s, lows in the 60s.  Not quite sure about the weekend yet, stay tuned for updates on that later in the week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, July 9, 2014
  •

Wednesday was a busy day as I returned to the office and started a new project.  Partly cloudy, still humid, not quite as hot as I only topped out in the mid 80s.  Sprinkles in clouds in the AM on the way to work, and then some more sprinkles in the evening while other areas in the region were getting severe type storms, mostly well to my south.  Temps have fallen slowly into the 70s early this Thursday morning, with tranquil skies. We should probably drop into the upper 60s by sunrise. Tomorrow the front finally drags through the area, but not without another 50 POP for showers/storms in the afternoon, with high temps in the mid 80s. On Friday and Saturday we should be sunny and warm, with highs in the mid 80s, lows in the mid 60s. Sunday should see a return to a shower/storm threat, only a 40 POP this time, with temps once again in the mid 80s and lows around 70.  More unsettled weather next week, with perhaps a cool down by mid-week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, July 10, 2014
  •

Thursday got interesting in the afternoon with numerous thunderstorms and intense showers in the region. Not much steering currents for these cells, so they stayed in place and dumped a lot of rain in many locations. The storms missed my home station till the evening around 8 PM. Intense rain fell but winds were moderate. Lots of great clouds around today that is for sure. High temps reached the mid 80s about the same as yesterday. The evening storm really brought the temperature down, as it dropped into the 60s and has stayed there ever since. In fact the low temperature for the day was reached in the late evening just a bit before obs.  We probably will hold in the mid 60s overnight, perhaps some fog, as the air temperature and dew point temperature are just about the same value right now. Friday should be partly cloudy with highs in the mid 80s once again, with a 40 POP for showers/storms. Lows in the mid 60s once again. Saturday should be sunny with high temps in the mid 80s. Lows Saturday night in the upper 60s, then a partly to mostly cloudy Sunday and a 40 POP for showers/storms. Monday and Tuesday look to be partly to mostly cloudy with high temps in the upper 80s, and a 50-60 POP for showers/storms - a possibility for some severe weather to break out on Tuesday with a good burst of cool air coming down from Alaska into the midwest and then advancing towards our area as a strong cold front and lots of energy for the possible severe weather.  Wednesday through Friday should be sunny to partly cloudy and cooler, with high temps in the upper 70s to around 80 and lows in the low 60s. A nice break, quite a nice cool pool of air with a weather map looking more like late last winter rather than the summer. May it keep this pattern the rest of the summer, as far as I am concerned!!

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, July 11, 2014
  •

Friday hit about the same temps as the previous few days, highs in the mid 80s, lows in the mid 60s. Partly cloudy skies, still humid but only moderately so as dew point temps held in the 60s most of the day. There were some pop-up showers around in the late afternoon and early evening, but nothing measurable here.  Temps tonight have slowly dropped through the 70s and only very recently dropped into the upper 60s. We should only drop down to about 67  by sunrise, which also coincides with the current dew point temperature. Saturday should be sunny and quite warm, with highs in the upper 80s, lows in the upper 60s. Sunday should feature more clouds than sun, but still with highs up around or a bit above 90, with a 40 POP for showers/storms.  Monday should be up in the low 90s, with a 60 POP for showers/storms, chance for severe storms on both Monday and Tuesday as a strong cold front pushes through by late Tuesday. Highs on Tuesday in the mid to upper 80s with more clouds than sun, and a 50 POP for showers/ storms. Lows Sunday through Tuesday night should be in the upper 60s to lower 70s. Wednesday through Friday should see partly to mostly sunny skies, high temps around 80 and lows around 60 with lower dew point temps (in the 50s or possibly 40s most likely). Should be a nice break from the heat for a few days. Big weather party on Saturday, should be an interesting post tomorrow night highlighting the happenings at the party.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, July 12, 2014
  •

Saturday was warm and humid, with a few hit or miss showers around in the afternoon but nothing at the station. I was traveling about 45 miles to my NNE to a weather party at Herb Close's in Manchester in the mid afternoon, and I observed a lot of towering cu, and a shower did hit at Herb's house before I got there. Good party, lots of great food and great weather talk.  I got a birthday cake (not actually my birthday till much later this month) that I shared with Marty B and Bobby M who also have birthdays coming up. Temps have been slow to drop in the early Sunday morning hours, as values continue to run in the 70s, and probably won't hit any lower than 70 by sunrise in a few hours. Sunday should be a bit warmer, up around 90 and humid with partly cloudy skies and a 40 POP for showers/storms. Lows Sunday night around a muggy 70, then up around 90 again on Monday with increasing chances for showers/storms, possibly strong/severe, at a 60 POP. Monday night lows in the muggy 70s with more showers/storms possible, then on Tuesday more showers and storms at a 60 POP, mostly cloudy skies, highs in the upper 80s. A strong cold front moving through slowly should finally take hold overnight Tuesday or on Wednesday, with partly to mostly sunny skies and highs up around 80, lows around 60-65. Thursday and Friday should see similar conditions.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, July 13, 2014
  •

Sunday was very warm and humid once again, with temps reaching the upper 80s, and dew points mostly in the very muggy 70s, and increasing clouds in the afternoon as storm clouds started to brew. Our storm today came in right about 2100, and continued for most of the rest of the day.  My new battery backup kept my computer going, as I took two brief power hits during the storm, but it beeped, kicked in, then when the power came back on in a few seconds, resumed normal operations. However, my VP2 station display went down and I had a bit of a problem getting it completely restored. A helpful call to my friend Dan H in Massachuesetts helped me get it back the first time, but then I had to do it myself when it went down briefly a second time later.  Thank goodness I have a second display, which for some reason didn't go down and I had all the data for the day still stored in there.  It should remain warm and humid overnight, with temps holding right where they are now around 70 with showers coming and going all night as it appears now from radar, though weakening.  Monday and Tuesday should see a repeat performance, with numerous showers and storms, particularly mid-late afternoon and evening. High temps around 90 on Monday and upper 80s on Tuesday - there will be about a 70 POP for these showers/storms both days, perhaps increasing to an 80 POP on Monday evening.  Wednesday and Thursday should see the cold front through our area, with sunny skies, lower dew points and high temps in the upper 70s to around 80, lows around 60.  Friday temps will warm a bit, still mostly sunny, but a 30 POP for showers as it stands now.  Next weekend looks unsettled, with increasing chances of showers/storms, highs in the mid 80s, lows in the mid-upper 60s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, July 14, 2014
  •

After some overnight rain in the first hours of the day, Monday was very warm and humid once again, with temps reaching the upper 80s, and dew points in the very muggy 70s, and increasing clouds in the afternoon as storm clouds started to brew. Our afternoon storm today came around 4 PM, which moved E NE towards Baltimore thereafter and got really severe, with tornado warnings posted N and NE of Baltimore, high winds and heavy rains. The evening was cloudy and muggy but generally rain-free, temps moving down slowly through the 70s and are still there early this Tuesday morning. We probably will reach about 70 by sunrise. Yet another round of storms probable on Tuesday, with very warm and humid conditions continuing, highs in the mid-upper 80s.  A 70 POP for showers/storms during the day and a 60 POP in the evening, then clearing and gradually cooler overnight Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday should be sunny, dry, and cooler, with high temps around 80 and lows around 60. Clouds should return on Friday with a 30 POP for showers and highs in the low-mid 80s.  The weekend still looks unsettled, with temps holding in the mid 80s and lows in the mid-upper 60s and a 40-50 POP for showers/storms.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, July 15, 2014
  •
Tuesday was mostly cloudy and muggy, with the usual showers/storms breaking out in the afternoon and extending into the evening. Patterns were such that most of today's rain missed my station, as I was just on the edge of much heavier rain just to my SE over Rockville and at my office in Silver Spring. I drove through some very heavy rain on the way home from the office in the early evening. The "cold" front has passed through, but you would never know it from the current conditions. Temps are still in the low 70s and dew point temp is just about the same at 70. Overnight we should slide into the 60s as the clearing and drying air slowly works in from the west. Wednesday and Thursday should see mostly sunny skies, lower dew points in the 50s, and high temps in the low 80s with lows in the upper 50s or lower 60s (Wednesday night mostly).  Clouds and showers, and the return of the muggies should be coming back on Friday and especially over the weekend, but at least without a heat wave, as high temps should be in the low-mid 80s. Plenty of clouds around at times, and about a 40-50 POP for showers/storms.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, July 16, 2014

Wednesday turned out nice - mostly sunny, drier with lower dew points, and cooler as we failed to top the 80 mark for the high temperature for the day. It was still cloudy and a bit foggy overnight, but cleared off by sunrise. Temperatures this evening have been falling through the 60s with dew points in the 50s, and should be in the upper 50s by sunrise Thursday morning.  Thursday should see even more sun/less clouds then Wednesday, with continued relatively low dew points and high temperatures around 80. Partly cloudy, a tad warmer Thursday night with lows around 60, then on Friday the dew points start creeping up into the low 60s, but with temps still moderate in the low 80s at most. Somewhat cloudier over the weekend but still with some sun, moderate humidity and high temps both on Saturday and Sunday around 80. Next week looks like a slow warmup through the 80s by day, 60s for lows, with slowly increasing chances at showers/storms at a 30 POP on Monday growing to a 50 POP by Wednesday. No major warmup in the cards right now, temps should stay in the seasonable mid 80s for the foreseeable future for the most part. Upper 80s on Wednesday should be the warmest day of next week.

This link has not been re-established as yet, so no data is available on it at the current time. Stay tuned for hopefully getting re-established soon.  I got the Weatherlink IP on Thursday and attempted installation. Got the hardware hooked up - cable and data logger hooked into the VP2 display and the router as instructed, but the software installation and hookup through the weatherlink website did not work out unfortunately. So more waiting for getting my station back online.

  • Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, July 18, 2014
  •
Friday once again turned out fairly nice - a bit more clouds, nice cool upper 50s early morning, still relatively low dew points. More clouds this evening, and the temperature has been slower to drop off, still in the upper 60s right now early on this Saturday morning. There are also some showers around, particularly to the west and north. Probably won't drop any lower than the mid 60s by sunrise in a few hours. Cloudy both Saturday and Sunday wth high temps in the low 80s on light easterly component winds. Lows should be in the upper 60s with continued cloudiness. Monday and Tuesday should be partly cloudy with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the upper 60s as humidity tries to return to the area. Wednesday partly cloudy with high temps in the upper 80s and lows in the upper 60s. A 30 POP for showers/storms Wednesday night and then a 50 POP for showers/storms on Thursday with highs around 90.  Fairly seasonable weather should start to kick in on Friday extending into the weekend.

This link was re-established on Friday evening, I am happy to report. My computer guy Nick, my friend Marty B on the phone from his vacation spot in Montana, and email guidance from Dan H got me pointed in the right direction and also to do the setup correctly. I don't think I had the plug set well last night in the back of the VP2 display as the internet setup form was not finding my device last night but did tonight. It took a while but finally the signal found its way to weather underground, but so far the CWOP connection has not been successful.  Now my biggest hassle is that the data logger isn't auto downloading into my weatherlink software browse data log - I have to manually kick off a download. We will work it out eventually I am sure.   But at least now I can say that I am online.   My data can also be found at:  http://www.weatherlink.com/user/walrusman

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, July 19, 2014
  •

Saturday was quite pleasant for me, with mostly cloudy skies keeping things relatively cool, topping out at 80 - there were a few brief sunny periods in the afternoon (maybe the morning too, but I was asleep). We also had a bit of drizzle/very light rain in the evening around 1930-2000, but nothing measureable. Heavier showers fell to my west and north, but mostly missed my station as they headed NE. Temps tonight fell slowly through the 70s into the 60s, mid 60s early this Sunday morning with cloudy skies holding forth. It should be in the mid 60s by sunrise in a few hours. Sunday should be mostly cloudy once again, with highs in the low 80s but with little chance of any rain. Lows in the 60s Sunday night, then partly cloudy skies on Monday with highs in the mid 80s, lows in the upper 60s. Upper 80s on Tuesday with partly cloudy skies, lows around 70. Wednesday should be partly cloudy and our warmest day of the week, with highs around 90, with a 30 POP for showers/storms in the evening/overnight and low temps around 70. Thursday looks to have temps in the mid-upper 80s with a 50 POP for showers/storms as a frontal system finally makes its way through the region slowly by the evening with temps falling back down into the 60s during the overnight. Thursday and Friday should see sunny, warm and less humid conditions, with highs in the mid 80s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, July 20, 2014
  •
Sunday was another quite pleasant summer day for me, with mostly cloudy skies keeping things relatively cool, topping out around 80 once again - there were a few brief sunny periods in the afternoon (maybe the morning too, but I was asleep). No drizzle observed today, showers around but very widely scattered and light.  Temps have been slow to drop off as dew points are rising up to near the 70 mark.  Temps are still in the low 70s early this Monday morning.  Probably won't get much below 70 by sunrise. A general warming trend this week, with increasing humidity, as temps rise into the mid 80s on Monday, slight chance of a shower, then lows around 70 Monday night, then in the upper 80s on Tuesday, very warm and humid. Temps rise again into the upper 80s on Wednesday and mid 80s with quite a bit of clouds on Thursday, lows around 70, with increasing chances up to a 60 POP on Thursday for showers/storms from an approaching cold front from the west on these midweek days.  Somewhat cooler and drier air should be coming in on Friday, with highs in the mid 80s and lows in the 60s that should carry us through Saturday. Chances of showers/storms returns with a 30 POP on Sunday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, July 22, 2014
  •

Tuesday was a sunnier, warmer, and more humid than it has been as high temps rose into the mid 80s and dew points rose into the low 70s. There were some scattered cumulus at times in the afternoon, some towering cumulus even as there were some isolated small showers in the region, but nothing here at my station. Tonight temps have remained warm, currently in the mid 70s, with dew points still at 70. Probably will not drop below 70 tonight by sunrise.  Wednesday should be the hottest day of the week, with partly cloudy skies and highs in the low to possibly mid 90s. There is a 50 POP for showers/storms by the mid-late afternoon, continuing into the evening and the overnight. Lows Wednesday night will probably be around 70. Thursday should see rain showers/possible storms (still a 50 POP) in the morning and possibly the early afternoon, but I think it will be clearing off by mid-afternoon if not sooner with high temps in the low 80s, and dew point temps dropping through the 60s. Clear by evening, with lows dropping to around 60 by morning. Friday should see high temps in the low-mid 80s with light winds and dew points in the 50s. Lows on Friday night in the low 60s, then another nice day on Saturday with highs in the low to mid 80s, and relatively low dew points and light winds. Sunday should see a return of clouds and rain showers/storms (50 POP) with high temps in the mid 80s and dew points creeping back up into the 60s.  A 40 POP for rain showers on Monday with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, July 23, 2014
  •
Wednesday was our hottest day in a while, since I hit 91.2° on July 8, and was only the 5th day this July with a maximum temperature of 90° or greater. The max occurred a bit earlier than usual as clouds moved in with associated showers and storms that once again hit elsewhere, as I only got a few drops, some dark cumulus congestus and fractostratus, and a few flashes of lightning. According to radar, the storm just missed me to the east/southeast if I got my bearings correct. Tonight the temps are holding in the 70s under cloudy, humid skies, with numerous light showers out to my west that indeed might make it in here before sunrise or perhaps also later in the morning. A 40 POP tonight, a 50 POP on Thursday and cooler, with cloudy skies and clearing late, high temps around 80. Clear Thursday night with lows around 60. Then on Friday a nice day with highs in the low-mid 80s and lows in the low-mid 60s. Saturday warming up again and more humid, with high temps in the upper 80s. Saturday night through Monday should see a 50-60 POP for showers/storms, high temps in the upper 80s and lows in the upper 60s.  After that a nice period of weather with sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s and lows in the upper 50s to lower 60s to finish out the month of July, believe it or not.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, July 24, 2014
  •

Thursday was our transition day from the heat of yesterday to the relative cool of the next two days (Thursday and Friday). I did have some light occasional showers during the overnight hours, but by the time I was up and on my way to work the showers had moved off to the south and east. Gradually decreasing clouds during the day on Thursday with cooler temps in the mid 70s for highs was quite pleasant, as the dew point also gradually decreased.  The temperature this evening is dropping off nicely, currently in the low 60s, and should make it into the middle or upper 50s by sunrise Friday. During the day on Friday sky conditions should be mostly sunny, dry, with high temps in the low-mid 80s. Low 60s for Friday overnight minimums, then a warm up on Saturday with highs in the upper 80s, lows in the 60s and increasing dew point values and the slightest chance for a shower/storm. Sunday might be a tad warmer, though right now forecasted highs are once again in the upper 80s, but some forecasters are calling for highs in the low 90s. That will also depend on how much cloud buildup we have and if storms/showers develop to put a cap on the rising temps at the critical part of the day for maximum heating.  There is a 60 POP for showers/storms on Sunday afternoon, and a 50 POP on Sunday evening/overnight. On Monday this 50 POP continues, but should be diminishing as the day moves on and the front gets through the area. The rest of the week looks nice, with sunny to partly cloudy skies and high temps in the upper 70s to low 80s, lows in the upper 50s to lower 60s as we bridge from July to August at the end of the week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, July 25, 2014
  •
Friday was our one nice day of the week, but it got a bit warmer than I expected, reaching the mid 80s by the late afternoon. Sunny skies, relatively low dew points mostly in the 50s, and light winds were the dominating conditions on this workweek ending day. Tonight temps are dropping through the 60s, but probably will only reach 60 for a low by sunrise on Saturday.  I was working on my July records today at the office and was using my daily weather journal.  For some reason I forgot to put the journal in my bag to bring home with me, so I am a bit lost tonight without it. Saturday should be warmer and more humid, with highs in the upper 80s, and just a slight chance (20  POP) for late afternoon showers.  I will be at an all day/evening weather conference near BWI airport tomorrow. Showers may persist, at least as possibility on Saturday evening with lows getting into a more muggy 60s by sunrise on Sunday morning.  Sunday looks to potentially have the chance of having severe weather, including a possible MCS forming out in the eastern Midwest and heading eventually into our area- sometimes these will also be possible derechos associated with these storm complexes. One of our weather conference speakers will be talking about our 6/29/12 derecho that ravaged our area on that fateful day. Temps should once again be around 90 on Sunday. More showers/storms possible on Monday (50 POP) with highs in the low-mid 80s.  Then on my 64th birthday on Tuesday, and thereafter the rest of the week, we should have sunny skies, relatively low dew point temperatures, with high temps around 80, lows in the upper 50s to lower 60s.

Now the display agrees with the data on the data logger record browsing sheet. Thanks to Stan for his valuable input in this, still have to work out a final operation to tweak the data into correct values.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, July 26, 2014
  •

Saturday was a busy day elsewhere, as I attended the AmericanWX.com conference at the BWI Hilton near BWI Airport. It was a full, busy day with lots of great presentations and lots of weather talk among some 40-50 weather enthusiasts from all around the country.  The day started out cloudy, with a few light rain showers around the region, but not at my station. Skies cleared out mid-day, and was sunny and quite warm in the afternoon, with scattered cumulus dotting the sky. As evening came, clouds increased as areas of scattered showers re-entered the region, with a few sprinkles noted at my station as I came home from the conference around 2230. Temps are still quite mild, holding in the mid 70s, with the dew point rising to around 70.  Presently a fairly large, substantial area of rain showers with a few embedded thunderstorms is about to come in to my immediate area from the WNW (Pennsylvania). So numerous rain showers will be falling most of the rest of the overnight hours. (officially a 50 POP) Temps will only drop to around 70 by sunrise. Partly cloudy skies on Sunday with scattered showers and storms around, mostly developing in the afternoon and evening (50 POP) with high temps in the 80s. A real good shot of showers and storms are due Sunday night, with an 80 POP and possible heavy, flooding rains and severe storms. Lows should be around 70. A diminished chance of showers and storms with partly cloudy skies on Monday (down to a 30 POP), highs in the low 80s and lows Monday night dropping down into the upper 50s. Sunny, beautiful skies start on Tuesday and should hold all of the work week, with high temps in the upper 70s through Wednesday and low 80s through Friday, with lows Tuesday and Wednesday night in the upper 50s and lows Thursday and Friday night in the low 60s. Looks like a really nice day for my 64th birthday on Tuesday.  Next weekend looks to be changeable, with more clouds than sun but more details on that in the coming days.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, July 27, 2014

Sunday was a restful day after all the activity on Saturday. Clouds were pretty dominant most of the day, but with some sun poking through at times. Still warm as temps maxed out in the mid 80s.  Chances for showers/storms increased as the day went on, but nothing really developed till late evening, and even then somehow I missed all but a few drops of rain late just a bit before observation. Temps have dropped into the low 70s early this Monday morning, and showers are still around, showing on radar, but very easily could miss my station overnight. It should get down into the upper 60s by sunrise Monday. Monday looks to be partly cloudy with high temps in the low 80s and a 30 POP for showers during the day and in the evening. Overnight Monday should start cooling off, with lows around 60. Tuesday and Wednesday should be sunny and pleasant, with highs in the upper 70s and lows in the upper 50s. Thursday and Friday should warm up a bit but still remain dry as we transition into August. Highs should be in the low 80s and lows in the low 60s. Similar temps as we head into the weekend, but clouds on the increase and a 30 POP for showers/storms by Sunday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, July 28, 2014

Monday was one of those transitional days, days we have been having fairly frequently this July. Cooler, gradually drier a bit, sunny but with plenty of stratocumulus clouds at times as the air was quite well mixed today. Some isolated light showers around but nothing at my station. I had my greatest PWG since July 13 when I had a 23 MPH gust. A very invigorating day at times! Tonight temps are dropping slowly through the 60s. We should be around 60 by sunrise on Tuesday. The rest of the week should be quite pleasant generally, with high temps in the upper 70s on Tuesday then low 80s the rest of the workweek. Lows Tuesday night should be in the upper 50s, then low 60s the rest of the week. There is a slight chance (30 POP) for a shower or storm on Friday, and the weekend looks to be a bit cloudy but with low 80s/low-mid 60s temperature pattern holding.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for my 64th birthday, Tuesday, July 29, 2014
  •

Tuesday was my 64th birthday. I took the day off to further enjoy it. And I did. And I had one of the best days weatherwise of the summer.  The high temperature only reached 72.9°, not a daily record low max (68 in 2001 is still the record) but a beautifully pleasant day nonetheless. We had some stratocumulus clouds at times, some breezes at times, but it was simply wonderful and the rest of our summer days should be like it was on Tuesday IMHO. Temperatures this evening have really been dropping off, and were under 60 prior to midnight obs, which gave me my 6th day with mins in teh 50s this July and Wednesday already is known as the 7th day. I don't have the averages for that statistic handy, but that has to be an above normal amount. The low temperature by sunrise on Wednesday looks to be in the low 50s. The record low was 56 on Tuesday so we ran close on that one, but the record low on Wednesday is 51 and I don't think we will quite reach that but we could- stay tuned! Temps on a sunny Wednesday should reach the low 80s, with lows dropping into the 50s once more. Thursday and Friday should see highs in the low-mid 80s, with lows in the low 60s. By Friday we have a slight (30 POP) chance for showers, but over the weekend the chances increase to a 50-60 POP with temps holding in the low-mid 80s and lows in the 60s under mostly cloudy skies.
