Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, January 2, 2014

Thursday featured our first snow of 2014, and our biggest snow of the 2013-2014 winter season so far. Snow fell between about 1430 and 2130, but on the wraparound with increasing NW winds and colder temps we got a bit more of snow the past hour or so but will be counted in on Friday's total. Temp was 36 (our high for the day) when the snow started but gradually fell to 32 by the time it ended mid-evening. Now early this Friday morning temps have dropped down to 22 with the morning low around sunrise expected to be around 17-18. There is a 50 POP on this overnight snow shower activity. Wind advisory up till noon, also wind chill advisory during most of the morning hours. Friday during the day we could have winds 20-30 MPH with wind chills below zero - air temps will struggle to make the low 20s. Lows Friday night around 8, our coldest temps of the season by far. Saturday should moderate some under mostly sunny skies, with highs in the low 30s. Lows Saturday night also moderating in the 20s, then cloudy on Sunday and Sunday night with a 50-70 POP for rain and snow with temps in the 30s.  Monday should be sunny with highs in the mid 30s, then turning sharply colder again, with lows Tuesday morning in the 5-10 range. Highs on Tuesday should only be 15-20, the coldest of the season by far and coldest readings we have seen here in a number of years. Moderating on Wednesday with highs around 30, then 20s Wednesday night and highs up in the 30s on Thursday. These cold snaps sure are short-lived these days.. Hopefully the snow cover can help get us down to that elusive 0° mark - I haven't gotten that low in a number of years, and only a few times since 2000.

Thursday's precipitation: 0.36" (LR)

VP2 amount missing - snow doesn't melt through to give a reading in that gauge

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, January 3, 2014

Early Friday morning put the finishing touches on our first snow of 2014 that mostly fell on Thursday with an hour of "wraparound" snow around 2-3 AM. This additional 0.5" of snow gave me a storm total of 4 inches, a nice way to start the new year. And cold air has invaded the region with the coldest temperatures of the season (so far).  Temperatures got no higher than the low 20s during the day on Friday, and have dropped well into the teens on Friday evening and into early Saturday morning.  Barometric pressure has risen dramatically with the cold, clear, dry circulation as our LOW moved well to the east and north during the day. Clear skies and calm winds have helped drop the temps down to their lowest values of the season so far, and by sunrise we should be in the single digits. Saturday should see sun and somewhat of a rebound on the temps, with highs around the freezing mark. Saturday evening should see continued moderation under increasing clouds, with lows in the low 20s and possibly some freezing drizzle or freezing rain developing after midnight. Sunday should see a warmup over the freezing mark, with the freezing rain changing to rain, with a high temp around 40. Sunday night temps should drop back into the 20s once again with the precipitation ending, possibly as mixed rain/snow showers. Monday should see highs in the low 30s in the morning but into the low 20s by afternoon. Monday night will be clear and very cold, with lows around zero. Tuesday will be the coldest day so far and coldest day in years, with sunny skies and highs only reaching 10-15°. Tuesday night not quite as cold, lows around 10, then on Wednesday moderating temps with highs around freezing. A continuing warmup the rest of the week, with possible rain or snow on Thursday. A real dose of winter for the coming week!

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, January 4, 2014

Saturday morning was my coldest morning of the season, and coldest reading at my station since 2/7/2010 when I had a low of 8, and for January my lowest since 9 was recorded on 1/31/2010.  Early next week may top that, stay tuned! Sun and light winds warmed us up on Saturday with highs reaching above the freezing mark by mid-afternoon. Tonight temps have dropped into the low 20s, warmer than last night, but still well below freezing to set up the freezing rain scenario for Sunday morning. We are under a freezing rain advisory for freezing rain/drizzle till 3 PM. Temps should stay below freezing till mid-day. Freezing rain (90 POP) should change over to just rain in the afternoon as our high temps reach into the upper 30s. Rain should continue into the evening (continued 90 POP), with lows dropping a bit down into the low 30s. Monday should see rain and snow showers ending by late morning (60 POP) with high temps in the upper 30s but dropping in the afternoon. Monday night should see clearing and much colder temps, with lows dropping overnight to around zero. Tuesday should see sunny and bitterly cold temps, with highs from 10-15, for our coldest day of the year and coldest in several years. I will research how long it has been that cold when the actual values are determined.  It still shouldn't be my coldest days ever, which were on 1/17/82 and 1/19/94 with highs of only 4 both of those days. Lows in 1982 were -14 and in 1995 -12.  Anyway, Tuesday night should be clear and not quite as cold, with a low around 10. Wednesday temps should start to moderate, with high temps around 30, lows Wednesday night in the low 20s, then highs on Thursday in the upper 30s, with some rain or rain/snow mix falling on Thursday and Thursday night. Friday might see our warmest temps of the week, into the 40s possibly.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, January 5, 2014

We are in the middle of a very dynamic, changeable pattern of ups and downs - if you don't like the weather today just wait till tomorrow. After a cold Saturday, we moderated on Sunday under clouds and light freezing rain in the AM which changed to occasional light rain in the afternoon and evening as temps recovered and into the mid 30s, melting more snow and ice. Temps very early AM on Sunday were in the low 20s, but as clouds and the precip came in on SW winds the temps rose (while I was sleeping in the later AM). Overnight tonight we have some fog (dense fog advisory out right now through 6 AM) and occasional rain, which should get a bit heavier by sunrise and last for a few hours, then clearing and gradually colder  conditions with increasing winds that will be lowering our wind chill temps below zero by Monday evening. We might get a bit of snow at the very end of the precip, but it shouldn't amount to much, if anything measurable at all. Monday night/Tuesday morning it will be bitterly cold, with min temps as low as they have been in this past decade, down around zero. Clear and dry, with diminishing winds will help the temperature lower towards the zero mark Monday night. Temps on Tuesday will be in the teens. Tuesday night should find mins by Wed morning of around 10 above. Wednesday should see a moderating trend start, with high temps around 30. Lows Wednesday night should be in the low 20s. Thursday becoming cloudy with highs in the upper 30s. Rain possibly on Friday (40-50 POP) with high temps in the low 40s. Saturday should see cloudy skies with high temps reaching 50s.

Sunday's precipitation: 0.21" (VP2 gauge still frozen up with snow and not working properly)

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, January 6, 2014

What a Monday! Started out mild and cloudy, with light rain showers before I got up. Temps rose overnight into the mid 40s, and got rid of most of our snow and ice from a few days ago. As I was going to the office around 9 AM, there were a few light showers left where some snow flakes were mixed in. The only snow I observed today- though there may have been some later while I was at work. I had to melt down the ice in my gauge this evening as it flash froze with our rapidly dropping temps this afternoon and evening. Skies cleared, the wind picked up and it has gotten really cold, as temps dropped through the 30s, 20s, teens, and now are in the single digits. Just prior to midnight my wind chills finally got below zero. Since my winds underreport my wind chill values are more moderate than they should be. Still we are under a wind chill advisory for below zero wind chills most of Tuesday and into Wednesday. By morning, I may be close to zero for my min for the day. Highs on Tuesday should be in the low to mid teens, with significant wind chills as winds will keep up most of the day. It will be our coldest day in a long time. Moderation will start slowly Tuesday night as it will only get down to around 10 or so. Then on Wednesday under sunny skies we should rise up to the upper 20s. . Wednesday night cloudy with lows only in the low 20s. Thursday cloudy with high temps in the upper 30s.  Then on Friday temps again in the upper 30s with a 40 POP for rain showers. Over the weekend we may approach the 50 mark - clouds Saturday and sun on Sunday. What a roller coaster ride with these temperatures!

Monday's precipitation: 0.08" (VP2 gauge had 0.19" that was most of the remaining snow from late last week melted, plus today's rain - but still not usable.)

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, January 7, 2014

What a Tuesday! It was very cold all day today, with wind chills below zero through most of the afternoon. Wind died down finally in the early evening, but the temperature has dropped off into the single digits. I set a daily record low temp this morning with +3, and my max temp this afternoon of 17 (rounded value) set a daily low max record.  There is a slow warmup started, with the lows by morning a few degrees warmer than this morning around 6 or so, then sunny on Wednesday with high temps reaching well into the 20s. Lows Wednesday night only down to the low 20s, then Thursday partly cloudy with highs in the mid-upper 30s. Thursday night there is a chance (30 or 40 POP) for light snow or freezing rain, with lows in the upper 20s to low 30s, then Friday becoming sunny and milder, with temps in the 40s. Saturday should be cloudy with a 50-60 POP for rain showers, with high temps in the 50s. Sunday should see more sun than clouds, with high temps once again returning into the 50s. So the uphill part of our roller coaster temperatures has just started, but will we just level out for a while or will we head back down again! We shall see over the next few days.  For now, we are still in the deep freeze.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, January 8, 2014

Wednesday found our warmup starting. After another frigid morning just above zero (no records today however) we rose well into the 20s in the sunny afternoon with some clouds as well. This evening we have stayed in the 20s so far and should remain that way through the overnight.  Clouds increase over the next few days, as do our precipitation chances. 20 POP for possible light freezing rain or snow Thursday night then a 30 POP for morning freezing rain on Friday changing over to possible rain showers in the afternoon with highs in the 40s, then a 40 POP for rain showers Friday night with lows in the 30s. Saturday a 70 POP for rain showers with highs in the 50s, then a 60 POP for showers Saturday night with lows in the 40s, then sunny on Sunday with highs around 50. So the remaining ice and snow piles around will be all melted by the weekend. Might start to cool off as we start the new work week on Monday but nothing like we have been seeing.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, January 9, 2014

Thursday warmed up some more, and melted the trace of snow I had around- now there are just man-made piles left. We almost made it to a seasonable high of 40 today. Had some clouds this morning and also this evening- with light freezing rain possibly starting in a few hours. We have a freezing rain advisory here from 3 AM to 9 AM. With our temp just below the freezing mark right now, I don't think we will see much if any of the freezing rain. More showers of plain rain expected later on Friday, and heavier rain with temps possibly reaching 60 on Saturday and Saturday evening (100 POP). Sunday should clear out and remain mild, with high temps around 50. More rain early next week is possible, then midweek after the rain it should get colder, but only seasonably so with highs around 40.  No arctic outbreaks here for the foreseeable future.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, January 10, 2014

Friday early am had light freezing rain/drizzle develop in our area before I got up to go to work.  The usual uneventful short walk out my front door and to my car was quite an adventure, as my wife had only spread snowmelt on the front sidewalk a few mins before i left. I must have taken at least 5 minutes to 20 feet out to the car! Thankfully I didn't slip and fall, I walked on the grass when I could as that gives better traction than frozen cement on sidewalks. Once I got in the car the drive out of the neighborhood was inconsequential, with melting slushy ice proving no real challenge for my car to safely drive through.  Clouds and occasional rain held true for most of Friday and Friday night, with temps holding in the 30s all day, but above freezing from mid-morning on. Tonight the temps have held in the mid 30s under occas light rain (70 POP) and fog (DENSE FOG ADVISORY posted now until 9 AM Sat), with temps expected to rise to near 60 by the time we reach Saturday afternoon. The rumble of thunder Saturday afternoon and evening is not out of the question, and a flash flood watch has been posted for the DC area with potentially 1-2 or more inches of rain expected on Saturday and Saturday night (100 POP).  We should clear off late Saturday night after midnight and then have a sunny day on Sunday with highs in the upper 40s. Monday should see more sun with highs in the low 50s. Monday night and Tuesday clouds should increase with a 50 POP for rain. Thereafter from Wednesday on to the end of the week sunny skies and seasonable temps in the 40s for highs and mid-upper 20s by night should provide a few peaceful, uneventful days.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, January 15, 2014

Wednesday featured dense fog overnight that persisted most of the morning, limiting visibility to near zero at times. We were under a dense fog advisory till noon.  Clouds finally lifted a bit in the afternoon.  Temperatures rose to around 50 by mid-afternoon.  Tonight the temps have slowly dropped off into the mid 30s with clouds thickening again, but precipitation coming up from the S and SW have mostly been tracking east and west of our county, and no measurable precipitation occurred at my station the entire day. Supposedly precipitation is eventually supposed to track in here sometime overnight, with light rain or a light mix or light snow by sunrise, with minor accumulations at best. Partly to mostly cloudy on Thursday with highs in the low 40s, a 30 POP for light rain or snow showers Thursday night into Friday, with highs on Friday in the upper 30s. Lows should be dropping into the 20s Friday night through Sunday night, with highs over the weekend mostly in the mid-upper 30s. Milder and sunny on Martin Luther King Day on Monday with highs in the upper 40s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, January 16, 2014

Thursday featured a brief flurry of snow overnight while I was sleeping, which was gone by the time I went to work around 9 AM. The flurry brought in colder air during the day, as I only made it up to around 40 for a high temp. Sunny on Monday with high temps in the upper 40s.  It looks like some very cold air is poised to come down and visit our area around midweek next week. We shall see.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, January 17, 2014

Friday featured a bit of a frosty morning, but later on partly cloudy and milder than Thursday with highs well up in the mid 40s. Colder again in the evening, and becoming cloudy, with a slowly advancing area of light rain and snow showers headed this way for some overnight action. And now at 3 AM it is snowing, and the cartops and grassy areas are snow-covered, but the street looks just wet. Temperature is right around the freezing mark and has been for the past few hours, since before midnight.  Winds have picked up.  We should be getting a bit colder by morning, into the low-mid 20s. Saturday should be partly cloudy and blustery at times, and cold with highs in the low 30s.  Saturday night into Sunday morning we might have another round of light snow shower activity with lows in the low 20s. Sunday should see more sun with highs warming up a bit into the low 40s. Sunday night back down into the 20s for lows then on Martin Luther King Day on Monday sunny with high temps in the upper 40s.  Monday night clear with lows in the low 20s. Tuesday through Friday looks quite cold, with high temps mostly in the 20s and lows in the teens. There should be plenty of sun however, but with low wind chills at times. But no snowstorms around to take advantage of this cold air.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, January 18, 2014

Saturday had cold and a bit of snow to start the day off. Best I could determine it only amounted to a Trace in snow and also in the water equivalent. Snow covered the cartops and grassy areas from the very early morning snow (around 2-3 AM) but not really on the roads and sidewalks. The temps were around or just above freezing at the time of snow, so it didn't stick very well to the pavement surfaces.  By morning (actually around noon by the time I awoke from my slumber) I looked out and most of the snow had either blown off or ablated (evaporated) from many surfaces. Some shady spots in my block still had snow in the late afternoon. The high temperature for the day was reached in the very early morning hours, dropped off after the snow quit till reaching a morning min of 26.0 at 0840, then rose to an afternoon max temp of 29.8 at 1455, then dropped off again into the low-mid 20s in the evening. Sun was plentiful in the later morning and most all afternoon, with clouds returning in the evening ahead of the next clipper system, which is showing snow in the area, mostly to the south of my location, and also through much of Pennsylvania once again, similar to last night. It doesn't look like we will get any snow out of this band of snow, at least overnight. There is only a 20 POP for snow overnight. We should reach a low of around 20 by morning. After morning cloudiness disperses before noon, we should feature sunny skies once again, warming up into the low 40s by sometime in the afternoon. Clear to partly cloudy skies Sunday night with lows in the upper 20s. Monday's Martin Luther King Day should be sunny with highs in the mid 40s, and lows Monday night into the 20s. Cloudy on Tuesday with a 50 POP for snow and a high in the upper 20s. Partly cloudy Tuesday night with lows around 10. Wednesday should be sunny with highs in the low-mid 20s. Cloudy Wednesday night with lows around 20.  Thursday should be cloudy with a 30 POP for snow showers and high temps in the mid 20s. Thursday night clearing off with a low of 10-15. Sunny with a high around 30 on Friday. Clouds return on Friday night and Saturday, with lows in the 20s and highs in the mid 30s. A cold week ahead, with some snow, but nothing really major, storm-wise, as there isn't a lot of moisture around to work with.  That cold NW flow is generally a dry one, particularly after the Great Lakes moisture dries up as it goes over the mountains, dropping its snowy load only in the mountainous areas out to my W.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, January 19, 2014

Sunday moderated the cold all day, starting at midnight since that was when I had my min for the day.  I made it up into the mid 40s under mostly sunny skies (but with a high cloud deck most of the afternoon). This evening temps have been slow to drop, only into the low-mid 30s late with the upper 20s the lowest we should reach around sunrise. Sunny skies on Martin Luther King Day Monday, with highs in the upper 40s. Warmest day of the week by far; we will be in the deep freeze the rest of the week. Tuesday there is an 80 POP for snow with highs in the mid 20s, then a 50 POP for snow Tuesday early evening then partly cloudy later with lows by morning expected to be around 7 above. Wednesday should be mostly sunny with highs in the low 20s.  Mostly cloudy Wed night (lows in the upper teens) and then Thursday with highs around 30 and a 30 POP for snow showers. Lows Thursday night in the lower teens, then partly cloudy with highs in the upper 20s on Friday. It looks like we might get above the freezing mark by Saturday, with high temps on Saturday in the mid-upper 30s and lows in the 20s and highs on Sunday in the mid 30s with plenty of sun. So a cold week, which could be made colder from the snow on Tuesday, which could be up in the 3-4 inch range, and help refrigerate us even more the rest of the week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, January 20, 2014

Martin Luther King Day Monday was the day before the big Tuesday snow, and you couldn't tell that we were going to get snow from the weather on Monday. Sun and temps up in the 50s seemed quite placid and not foretelling of the forecasts for significant snow on Tuesday. Temps this evening have dropped off slowly through the 40s into the 30s, and are just above freezing now at 0215 EST.  Clouds have overspread the area. Time line now is putting snow in here mid-morning around 9 or 10 AM, and lasting through the day into the evening hours. Temps will be slowly dropping all day, and the snow should get drier and drier in moisture content. A WINTER STORM WARNING has been posted and remains posted for our area at this moment.  Predictions in my area have been in the 6-8 inch range, slowly climbing higher over the past few days. Winds picking up may blow and drift the fluffy snow around a bit. Tuesday night we should clear off late, and temps should drop significantly, into the upper single digits possibly (though I have my doubts that it will get THAT cold- I think it will be more like the low teens by Wednesday morning.  Wednesday looks to be the coldest day even with sunny skies, and rival Jan 7 for our coldest day of the season, with lows around 5 and highs around 13-15. Thursday and Friday should also be sunny and will stay well below freezing, with highs in the low-mid 20s and lows in the teens. Moderating temps over the weekend with some sun, with highs in the mid 30s and lows around 20. More cold air looks to come down from the North early next week, so we will stay well below normal temperature-wise for the foreseeable future.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Well Tuesday was the day of the "big" snow, our biggest calendar
day snow since January 26, 2011, when I had 8.8" of snow.
Temperatures were initially mild at midnight but basically lowered
all day till hitting the lowest value on literally the last minute of the
observation day one minute before midnight bridging into
Wednesday.  My wife said that the snow started around 0845 and I
was sleeping at the time.  The snow continued light to moderate in
intensity for the next 12 1/4 hours, ending right around 2100.  With
the colder temperatures the snow got drier and fluffier, as the low
moisture content of the snow shows (see statistics below).

Except for a minor rise in the temperatures around sunrise just
before the snow started around 0845, temperatures just lowered
all day as the "Arctic Front" passed over and through our area.
Early this Wednesday morning temperatures have been dropping
to 10° by 2 AM, and by sunrise should be somewhere in the single
digits.  Wednesday looks to be possibly our coldest day of the
winter with high temps only expected to be between 10 and 15.
Our previously coldest day this winter was on Jan 7 when we had
17 for a max temp and 3 for a min temp.  Lows Wednesday night
may drop close to zero. Thursday and Friday should see only a
slight moderation at best, with highs around 20 and lows 5-10.
More serious moderation should take place on Saturday with
highs getting a bit above the freezing mark into the mid 30s, the

only time about freezing during the entire week period (from
Monday the 21st to Monday the 28th). Sunday will cool down a bit
into the low 30s, then back into the deep freeze on Monday with
highs only in the 20s and lows in the low teens.  Some clouds and
perhaps a few snow showers at times on Thursday, but basically
with all this cold air we should remain pretty dry through the next
week.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, January 22, 2014

Wednesday dried out and was very cold under mostly sunny skies after very early morning clouds leftover from our retreating snowstorm of Tuesday.  I reached the middle single digits for my frigid morning low, rising only into the mid teens in the afternoon. The high temp of 18 (rounded up from 17.7) set a new daily low max temp record, surpassing the old record of 21 set back in 2005. This evening the temp has dropped off, but not as much as last night after the storm departed. We have some clouds around, and that helps put a lid on the temperature drop. We probably will drop to around 8 or 9 for a low for Thursday morning. On Thursday clouds and a 40 POP for scattered snow showers as another clipper pays us a quick visit, with highs in the mid 20s. Clearing out on Thursday night with lows down around 7. Mostly sunny and continued cold on Friday, with high temps in the low 20s.  Cloudy Friday night with lows around 15.  Mostly cloudy on Saturday and a bit milder, with highs in the mid 30s, with a 30 POP for snow showers. Lows on Saturday night around 15 under clearing skies. Mostly sunny on Sunday with high temps in the mid 30s. This brief "moderating" trend, which still features below normal temps will be brief, early next week we will be back in the deep freeze again with some talk I have heard of the temps by midweek the coldest of the season. We shall see about that.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, January 23, 2014

Thursday started out very cold, then clouds rolled in and we had some (unobserved but reported to me by others) light snow flurries that were not measureable.  By afternoon the sun was out and we warmed up a bit into the mid 20s.  Tonight we have cooled off once again, down to around 10 right now in the early Friday morning hours. We have a wind chill advisory out till 9 AM with values down to -10 possible - air temps in the 5-10° range.  Sunny and quite cold on Friday with highs around 18, then cold again Friday night but with clouds that should keep our lows above 10. Saturday cloudy and relatively mild, with highs in the low 30s and a 50 POP for snow showers during the day. Saturday night we should drop down again to around 13. Sunday should see mostly sunny skies with highs in the upper 20s.  Monday should be about the same up in the upper 20s with sun. Tuesday and Wednesday looks to be in the deep freeze once again, with high temps in the teens and lows in the single digits. A slow moderation the rest of the week looks to be in the cards, with highs reaching into the 20s and lows in the teens. Quite a cold stretch to finish out the month of January! There also is a small chance at a snowstorm next week along about Wednesday- the cold air may be sitting over us too much and driving the storm too far to our south to give us any real significant snow. But we shall watch it closely and see what develops.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday Jan 24, 2014

Friday was another in our string of very cold days, mostly sunny, so some snow evaporated off today and roads dried up. I finally returned to work, busy as a beaver with all this work piled up in my absence this week.  Tonight under slightly warmer southerly component winds temps have held in the upper teens, and may not reach the forecasted low teens by sunrise, especially with clouds streaming in from the west from our next clipper. A wind chill advisory has been posted once again for our area through mid-morning on Saturday. Snow is falling through much of the midwest, particularly MI, OH, and IN, with some also in upstate western NY and NW PA. I think the snow will mostly be to our north, but there is a good possibility we will get a new coating to an inch by late afernoon on Saturday. High temps on Saturday should reach into the low-mid 30s, with lows back down in the upper teens on Saturday night after the snow clouds clear in the evening. Sunday should be mostly sunny with highs in the upper 20s. Monday sunny once again with highs in the low 30s. Then late Monday and Tuesday the big chill comes back, with lows in the single digits and highs in the teens and low 20s through Wednesday. A bit of a moderating trend should follow towards the end of the week, with temps in the 30s and lows around 20 through Friday.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, January 25, 2014

Saturday was milder than it has been, warmest max since our big snowstorm day last Tuesday. We had mostly clouds all day, some breaks, but also some snow flurries that weren't measurable. Tonight the temps remained mild for the pre-midnight hours then dropped into the low 20s after midnight and after another cold front steamed on through our area. We should be mostly cloudy on Sunday with highs in the mid 20s and a chance for an occasional snow flurry or snow shower. Lows in the 20s on Monday night with still an outside shot at a snow flurry. Then on Monday we should moderate a bit into the mid 30s, before getting cold again late as yet another arctic front passes quickly through our area. Monday night into Tuesday morning should be clear and very cold, with lows in the upper single-numbers. Highs on Tuesday should be around 15, lows around 5, then up around 20-25 on Wednesday under sunny skies. Low 30s on Thursday under sunny skies, as a moderating trend starts to kick in. More sunny skies on Friday with highs in the mid 30s. On Saturday we have a 30 POP for rain or snow showers, as we enter the new month of February. Highs on Saturday is expected to reach the upper 30s. Some indications in the long-term patterns are that around Feb 1 we may go into a more zonal flow which means moderating temperatures for our region. We shall see how that pans out.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, January 26, 2014

Sunday was cloudy with similar highs and lows as Saturday, with more snow flurries in the mid-afternoon.  Tonight it is a bit cooler than last night, but temps in the mid 20s right after midnight, with the low by sunrise probably only no lower than 20. Monday we may see the temp get above freezing for the first time since early morning this past Tuesday, but should only be for a few hours, as temps will be dropping off into the mid 20s by late afternoon after the passage of yet another arctic front.  Winds will pick up, wind chills will lower, as we plunge back into the deep freeze overnight Monday into Tuesday morning, when temps should be in the single digits.  High temps on Tuesday will only reach the low-mid teens. Lows Tuesday night back down in the single digits, then highs on Wednesday should moderate a bit, into the low 20s.  A general moderating trend should take over the rest of the week, transitioning into the new month on Saturday with highs around 40, then low 40s by Sunday.  Highs on Thursday and Friday should be in the low-mid 30s, above freezing by a few degrees on Friday. Lows in the twenties on Thursday and Friday and into the weekend, in the upper 20s to around 30. No major storms on the horizon through the week, though a storm forming in the Gulf of Mexico right now should move NE and just miss us to the E, but bears watching in case the track trends more W, as it has been showing a slight tendency in some of the latest model runs.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, January 27, 2014

Monday featured a major warmup overnight into most of the morning, reaching the low 40s, the warmest reading since 52 was reached back on the 20th, a week ago. But alas it sure didn't last all day, as another arctic front passed on through and the temperature started plummeting again. Through the 30s and 20s and reached the upper teens by obs time tonight. Wind chill advisories out, reaching below zero again by morning, along with air temps around 7. But cloudy overnight and most of Tuesday, as a coastal storm draws closer, but should stay south and east of my immediate area.  Temps will not get out of the teens on Tuesday, and drop to around 10 with more clouds Tuesday night. Clearing off on Wednesday, with highs in the low 20s, then dropping in clear skies to around 10 again Wednesday night. Thursday should see moderation starting, with high temps around 30, lows around 20, then Friday up around 40. The weekend looks even milder, with highs in the 40s and lows in the 30s, with possible rain showers on Sunday, that may translate into showers also for the Super Bowl. But too far away yet for a definitive forecast for the Meadowlands on Sunday. Stay tuned for further developments on that, but it sure does look like we are in for a big pattern change with the change in month to February.

Cloudy(high clouds) all day, stayed very cold (16.6 was afternoon max around 3 PM) then snow started around 2300.

Wednesday started with the last of the surprise snow from very late Tuesday, I did wind up with 0.02" in my gauge after melting it this evening. So my Tuesday amount stands as of now as 0.02" which is what I reported early Wed morning.  The snow post midnight was very light so for now I am going with a trace. Snow was over between 1 and 2 am. Clearing by morning, sunny and still quite cold but not quite as cold as Tuesday with more sun today. One more cold night tonight, it may not go below 10 by sunrise. Over the weekend both days should have highs in the upper 40s with a 30 POP for rain showers on Sunday, lows mostly in the 30s with lots of clouds around. Next week looks quite unsettled with highs in the upper 30s mostly, lows in the 20s to low 30s, 40-50 % chances of rain, snow, or mixed precipitation most days, more details on next week in the next few days.
