Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, April 24, 2013

Wednesday warmed up quite a bit ahead of an approaching cold front, into the upper 70s after an early morning once again in the mid 40s. Sun most of the day, clouds increased towards nighttime as the front drew near. Showers and isolated storms were expected and were on radar in the usual SW/NE line. However, most of the energy went into PA from what I saw on radar, and I just had some dark clouds as night approached. Dew points rose into the upper 50s but the front has passed through now and temps and dew points have now dropped into the low 50s/upper 30s with increasing winds the past few hours. We should drop into the 40s by sunrise. Over the next few days through the weekend, sunny to partly cloudy skies should predominate, no rain, with high temps in the 60s and lows mostly in the 40s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, April 26, 2013

Sorry for no report on Thursday - VP2 problems- discussed below plus shortage of time and total exhaustion.

Friday remained seasonably cool and sunny with lighter winds. Temps have dropped off nicely through the 50s and well into the 40s Friday night through calm, clear and dry skies. By sunrise we should be around 40. Saturday should be sunny with highs around 70. Not quite as cool on Saturday night with lows in the mid-upper 40s with a bit of cloudiness coming in late. Sunday should be cloudy with highs in the upper 60s. Rain should be developing on Sunday night (70 POP) that should continue through Monday night, highs in the 60s, lows in the upper 40s. A 30-40 POP for continued showers through Wednesday as our LOW pressure system stalls out a bit over the general area.  Seasonable temps in the 60s and 40s continuing, with some sun at times.  My VP2 display continues its problems of not displaying data at all, the screen is still energized/lit up but there continues to have no data showing at all. Fortunately my computer data log is still showing full data and is getting to Wx underground through the internet.  But I can't see my current conditions at a glance, and have to go into my data logger to see. Minor inconvenience; I probably am going to have to get a new VP2 display. But at least I still have data!

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Saturday, April 27, 2013

Saturday remained sunny and warmed up a bit into the low 70s with light winds. Tonight temps have dropped back down through the 60s and 50s into the upper 40s but by sunrise we probably will be down around 45. Sunny early on Sunday, highs in the upper 60s but clouds will be on the increase in the afternoon and by sometime late evening rain should be developing, and continuing through Monday night (70 POP) with highs in the 60s on Monday and lows in the 50s. A 40 POP for continued showers on Tuesday then mostly cloudy skies continuing the rest of the week, with highs staying mostly in the 60s and lows in the 40s to around 50. There is a 30 POP for showers on Thursday, otherwise we should remain dry. Some sun might be experienced at times. But a general cooler than normal pattern as we enter the month of May should persist. My VP2 display continues its problems of not displaying data at all, the screen is still energized/lit up but there continues to have no data showing at all. Fortunately my computer data log is still showing full data and is getting to Wx underground through the internet.  But I can't see my current conditions at a glance, and have to go into my data logger to see current conditions along with viewing my Radio Shack backup thermometer for current outdoor and indoor temperatures. A minor inconvenience really but I probably am going to have to get a new VP2 display. But at least I still have data!

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, April 28, 2013

Sunday became cloudy a bit earlier than expected, and light rain came in a bit earlier also, in the mid afternoon. It was quite light, and didn't persist into the evening and dew pts dropped for a while as drier air entrained briefly.  Clouds have persisted, and should do so through all of Monday into Tuesday, with temps maxing out around 60 and a 100 POP for rain on Monday morning and showers to continue the rest of the day into the evening (50 POP).  A 40 POP for continued showers on Tuesday, with highs in the 60s, then a 30 POP for showers continuing (scattered and light) Tuesday night into Wednesday.  Thursday through Sunday looks mostly sunny and dry, with highs somewhere in the 60s and lows in the 40s to around 50.

On Sunday I staffed a table with the DC chapter of the AMS at the local Rockville Science Day at Montgomery College in Rockville. We had lots of interested students of science thirsting for more knowledge about anything science, with many of the science disciplines represented. We had a Van de Graaf Generator on display there to help students and adults understand more about static electricity - lightning out in nature. We also had a 4 inch rain gauge (like the one I have been using for the past 35 years) an anemometer, an IR gauge that measures temps of remote objects that you point it to, and a weather balloon/radionsonde that is so critical to upper air data that meteorologists use to forecast by. It was quite an enjoyable experience!

Sunday's precipitation: 0.02" (LR) 0.02" (VP2)
April precipitation: 2.27"
Seasonal snow/sleet: 15.3"
Annual YTD precipitation total: 12.22"

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, April 29, 2013

Monday was damp and cool with occasional light rain and drizzle most of the day, with some fog at times. Temps stayed in the 50s all day. Tonight drizzle is falling with temps holding in the 50s. Tuesday should see spotty drizzle in the morning with a 50 POP for showers in the afternoon and evening. Highs in the low 60s, low Tuesday night around 50. Still mostly cloudy with temps in the mid 60s on Wednesday, with a 40 POP for showers. Thursday through Sunday should see mostly sunny skies with temps in the mid-upper 60s and lows in the 40s as we head into May on a somewhat cool note. Contacted Davis today, they suggested a power down then up and if that doesn't work, buy a new console display. I am afraid that if I power down I will lose my datalogger and internet connection. So I have serious reservations, and will at least wait till I May starts before I do anything bold.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, April 30, 2013

Tuesday was damp and cool with occasional light rain and drizzle once again, mostly in the morning, but the sky started to lighten up in the mid-late afternoon and tonight the sky is mostly clear with a few scattered clouds. A fine stretch of weather looks to be headed our way to start off the month of May  - sunny and seasonable, with high temps around 70 and lows in the 40s from Thursday through the weekend.  I was off work on Tuesday and finally could get a hold of Davis tech support over the phone, and he walked me through the power down/power up procedure with my VP2 and it worked! My VP2 display once again shows me a full screen of data. Because of the powering off and on procedure, I lost memory in the display, so I still had to use my data logger for my extremes of the day. Tomorrow I should have total functionality back thank goodness. I have all my April data stored away and in my journal, so I am happy about that.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, May 2, 2013

Thursday was a bit cooler than Wednesday, with more clouds, but still partly sunny, with highs just under 70.  Tonight it is clear with temps heading down through the 40s, I suspect a low of about 45 by sunrise. Sunny to partly cloudy skies should be the case for our weather from Friday through the weekend. Next week looks to start wet, with a 50 POP for showers through Wednesday, and seasonable high temps in the 65-70 range. Our excitement for the late afternoon was a water main break right outside our house, with parking disrupted a bit for a time and a loss of water throughout the house. They were working loudly outside our house from about 4 pm to about 9 pm (under the lights) but they finished up the job, the water is back on, and the parking has been restored to normal.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Friday, May 3, 2013

Friday was a tad bit cooler than Thursday on the max temp side of things, with still some clouds around, but still partly sunny, with highs just under 70.  Tonight it is cloudy with temps slowly heading down through the upper 40s, I once again suspect a low of about 45 by sunrise. Clouds Saturday morning should give way to sunny to partly cloudy skies in the afternoon with highs in the mid 60s. Clear Saturday night with lows in the 40s, then Sunny on Sunday with highs in the mid 60s. Clouds should predominate the area most of the coming week, with increasing chances for showers, headed to a 70 POP for showers on Tuesday. Temps should be in the 60s by day and 50s by night with all the clouds, warming into the upper 70s by the end of the week with decreasing chances of showers and increasing sun by Thursday that should warm us up some.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 Backyard weather station report for Sunday, May 5, 2013

Sunday was cooler than Saturday on the max temp side of things on stronger easterly flow off the ocean, with another dose of overnight and morning clouds also keeping the temps down for a while in the AM hours. Pretty sunny in the PM hours, but a bit chilly for shorts that I was wearing on Sunday as I ran around doing a few errands. Tonight it is partly cloudy with temps heading down through the mid 40s, I suspect a low around 45 by sunrise. Sunday's sunny skies were the last real good dose of sun we will see in several days, as cloudy conditions will dominate the scene most of the time during the coming week with high temps mostly in the 60s and low temps mostly in the 50s. We will see increasing chances of showers from a 40 POP on Monday afternoon to an 80 POP on Tuesday night and 70 POP on Wednesday from a system that has been struggling to get here from the SE over the past few days.  The end of the week should warm into the 70s but still with chances of showers and thundershowers (50 POP) on Saturday in a more summerlike pattern.

Friday partly cloudy with highs well up in the 70s, and a 40 POP for showers and thundershowers scattered about.     Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Wednesday, May 8, 2013

Wednesday was cloudy, cool, and damp in the early AM, but then late AM through mid-Afternoon the sun broke through and warmed us up to around 70. It also built up some convection with all the moisture around, and storms developed late afternoon and gave me a nice soaking rain from about 1700-1900 with most of my daily rainfall falling then. My wife did note some thunder, but it was not enough to bother our bassett hound Flash, so it couldn't have been that bad. And rainfall rates were steady for most of that first hour between 1700-1800, but relatively light. Tonight stability has returned, and enough to develop our current dense fog condition, as there is a dense fog advisory out for most of the region.  We will drop into the low 50s by morning. Tomorrow should be pretty dry with partly to mostly cloudy skies, with just a 40 POP for showers in the afternoon, and high temps in the mid 70s. Friday looks to be the hot day of the week, with another 40 POP for showers/storms, and highs up in the mid 80s. A 60 POP for showers/storms Friday night into Saturday as a cold front approaches the area from the West. Temps will start falling on Saturday into the 70s, and then with decreasing shower chances on Saturday night temps will drop into the lower 50s. Right now it looks like partly cloudy skies with highs in the mid 60s for Mother's Day, and little if any chance for more rain.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, May 13, 2013

Back to work Monday was another pretty day, sunny at times, clouds at times, a tad cooler than Sunday with some decent breezes at times. Skies have really cleared off now in the evening/early Tue morning hours and the winds have dropped to calm over the past several hours, and the temps has fallen through the 40s into the upper 30s now. I think I will hit the mid 30s by sunrise (FROST advisory just extended into my county a few minutes ago). Freeze watches and warnings are out for areas to my west out in the Shenandoah River Valley and the mountains further to the west. Tomorrow will probably turn out to be my coldest morning of May. As is usually the case this time of year, a rapid warmup will ensue after this coldest morning. Many reasons for this, temps reach their coldest when the HIGH is sitting right over us, giving us clear skies and no winds, allowing for maximum radiational cooling. Then the HIGH shifts east, and we get a warmer return flow. Tuesday should be sunny and a bit milder, with high temps in the low 60s,then clouds and sprinkles Tue night with temps in the 40s. Then a big warmup on Wednesday with highs well up in the 70s with a 30 POP for showers and storms. The rest of the week should see temps in the upper 70s to low 80s with a 30-50 POP for showers/storms each day. Lows will be mostly in the 50s.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Tuesday, May 14, 2013

Tuesday was a transitional day after a clear, cold early morning. More than likely my 35 low temp will be my coldest reading for the month of May. When I was going to work around 0900, I noticed that we had a high cloud deck that must have put a lid on the temp earlier - the 35 was recorded at 0600 so the cloud deck probably came in right after that. A weak warm front kept moving in from the W and we got some sprinkles in the evening, along with moderating temps, particularly in the evening, as we have held in the mid 50s after topping off in the low 60s. earlier in the day. I suspect that these mid 50s temps will hold through the overnight, and will give us a launching pad for our high temps on Wednesday, which look to be somewhere in the 80s. with partly cloudy skies and a chance of some morning sprinkles. The next several days, through the weekend and into next week, look to have max temps from the mid 70s to low 80s, with a 30-50 POP for showers and storms each day. Low temps should mostly be in the 50s. Partly to mostly cloudy days, clearing off somewhat at night.  Much more of a muggy summertime pattern than we have been having, much to my "un-liking".

Wednesday was another transitional day - the second one to yesterday. Clouds and sprinkles in the AM and relatively cool gave way to PM partly sunny skies, warm and muggy conditions, with dew points rising to the mid 60s. Tonight temps have not dropped much, in the mid 60s now under cloudy skies. Temps probably will try to approach the dew point, currently 60, by sunrise. Mostly Cloudy and muggy one more day on Thursday, with highs in the low to mid 80s with a 30 POP for showers and storms. A cold front looks to be dropping far enough south to clear the area, and give us a few cooler days starting on Friday, with highs in the 70s, lows in the 50s, then sunny and cooler still on Saturday, with highs in the upper 60s, lows around 50, then back into the 70s on Sunday with partly cloudy skies.

Thursday was a bit cooler than Wednesday on the max temp, but it was warmer on the mins- we are starting to log 60s mins - a real depressing indication that summer is around the corner. Cloudy early, but no observed precip today- with partial clearing and a bit drier conditions as the day progressed. Storms that were to my north in central PA yesterday kind of skipped over us and then today were found to our south, in southern WV moving into the southern VA areas like Richmond. The east-west oriented front is wobbling north and south, and currently is lying south of us. But over the weekend, it will bec close enough for small waves along it to bring in increasing chances of precipitation to our area, topped off with a 60 POP for showers and storms on Sunday, with high temps in the upper 60s to low 70s and low only around 60. Friday and Saturday won't be too bad with partly cloudy skies and highs in the 70s and lows in the upper 50s. It looks to be warmer early next week, highs reaching into the low 80s again, and lows in the low to mid 60s and somewhat muggy.

Monday should be warmer still but with a 40 POP for showers and a high temp near 80. Thursday night temps in the 60s once again with a 40 POP for showers under cloudy skies. Friday should find temps in the mid 70s with a 40 POP for showers/storms. Saturday should be sunny and cooler, with highs around 70 as we should have a fine start to the Memorial Day weekend.  It looks now like it will be cool and sunny for the rest of the weekend, but just a bit too far in the future to get Sunday and Monday figured out for sure just yet.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Sunday, May 19, 2013

Sunday warmed up a bit helped by some afternoon sun. Dew point temps also rose - into the mid 60s. The warm front that had been to our south has moved north and I believe has just about passed our area. Currently there is an area of showers just to my west and south which may affect my area within the next few hours. Temps should remain in the 60s. Monday should be mostly cloudy, high temps around 80 with a 40 POP for showers/storms during the day and in the evening. On Tuesday and Wednesday we should just have partly cloudy skies with high temps in the mid 80s - and muggy. Thursday and Friday should find a return of clouds with a 30-40 POP for showers/storms- low 80s on Thursday, mid-upper 70s on Friday. Lows mostly in the 60s all week. Over the weekend it looks like we will dry out as a cold front finally pushes through the area. Temps on Saturday should be around 70 with sunny skies. Partly cloudy on Sunday with highs in the low-mid  70s and lows in the 50s. Not a bad start to the Memorial Day weekend.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Monday, May 20, 2013

Monday warmed up a bit more after some early morning clouds and drizzle. Afternoon sun drove the temps up to the 80 mark, and moisture increased to max out the dew point to the very uncomforable 70 mark. The temperature this evening has been slow to drop, only reaching the upper 60s early this Tuesday morning under cloudy skies. Temps should only drop a degree or two by sunrise under cloudy skies. Increasing chances for showers/storms as we progress through the week, from 30% on Wednesday to 50% on Friday. Cooling off by the end of the week should clear things out for a glorious Memorial Day weekend with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s under sunny to partly cloudy skies and lower dew points in the 40s and/or 50s.

Wednesday was the big day of switching over to verizon from comcast, but for now, so far, I am still using comcast email. Will advise when changes are made on that front. Wednesday was very warm and humid, with late afternoon cumulus buildups that led to some light thundershower action in the evening. Not severe at all, we were just on the edge with just a brief downpour just before 9 PM. Cooled us off out of the muggy upper 70s to the muggy mid 60s. Maintaining mid 60s now in the early morning hours of Thursday, with dew pt also in the mid 60s. Thursday should be cloudy and muggy with highs in the upper 70s to around 80 with a 90 POP for showers and storms, scattered light showers possible in the AM, more substantial activity in the afternoon and evening. Lows dropping late Thursday night into the upper 50s. Cloudy Friday with possible morning showers (30 POP) and maybe an afternoon sprinkle, but noticeably cooler and eventually drying out towards evening, with high temps in the mid-upper 60s. Lows on Friday night under clear skies in the mid 40s. Over the weekend highs around 70 into the lower 70s, lows in the mid-upper 40s on Saturday night and 50s Sunday and Monday night with more clouds to keep the temps up a bit. A 30 POP for showers by Monday, highs in the low 70s and lows in the 50s for Memorial Day.

Gaithersburg Maryland VP2 backyard weather station report for Thursday, May 23, 2013

Thursday was not as warm but still muggy, with late afternoon/early evening thunderstorms that gave me my biggest rain in over a month (since April 19 when I had 1.57"). We had two rounds of precipitation when most of today's rain fell - according to the VP2 (for some reason I got a bit more here than from my LR gauge) I had 0.78" of rain between 1730 and 1815 and 0.84" between 1900 and 1940. My max rain rate was 9.00" recorded at 1750. The rest of the evening has featured occasional light rain showers, and has continued into the early morning hours of Friday. Temps reached the upper 70s in mid-afternoon but have fallen into the mid 60s early on this Friday. I suspect we will be around 60 by sunrise. Radar is not indicating any more showers for the foreseeable next few hours. Friday should be considerably cooler, cloudy with a 40 POP for occasional light showers, extending into Friday evening. High temp during the day on Friday will only reach 60 so they may stay steady for most of the day then start dropping off in the evening, with lows overnight Friday into the low 40s. Sunny skies should dominate over the Memorial Day weekend, with highs in the 60s on Saturday and lows in the low 40s, then 70 on Sunday and low 70s on Monday, with lows in the upper 40s Sunday to lower 50s by Monday. Sunny to partly cloudy skies through most of next week, with a gradual warming into the 80s for highs, 60s for lows by Thursday.
