The unofficial official absurdly warm for March thread

Typhoon Tip

Even though it is very very rare ive seen it snow on may 20th i think it was on the valley floor so theres no way i would give up at the end of march or early april

It would certainly benefit lower elevations as climo gets exponentially more hostile for snowfall from now on. I suppose that if indeed this change does occur...maybe the MJO will cycle out of P8 and P1 by mid April and hopefully allow better wx later in the month, but that's really getting ahead of ourselves.

I didn't realize just how warm the long-range was looking until I noticed ALB forecasting 72 degrees next Monday. How often do you see forecasts for 20-25 degrees above climatology a week out?

FWIW, the looks like the earliest 80 degree day on record in Albany is 82 degrees on March 16, 1990. If we hit 80 or better early part of next week...it would be the second earliest occurrence on record.

I would have taken that bet in a heartbeat as well. But think about it....it's kind of a win either way for Kevin too. Even though he would owe Will some beer..Kevin would get his snow whixh to him..is more valuable than any beer.

Provided Will doesn't win by having ORH crushed while Tolland has the R/s line drifting just to his North. I'm liking my chances to catch more plowable snow.

Extended MOS numbers are in the mid-60's for Albany...and those are weighted towards climatology when you get out 5-7 days. Calling for 70 or better for early next week is pretty reasonable at this point...I just am not used to seeing an NWS office go quite as a aggressive with numbers that far out. The forecast you've got from Taunton is what I'm more accustom to seeing from the NWS. But right now, no reason to think a forecast for mid-60's isn't going to bust low.

A major snowstorm struck Upstate NY exactly two weeks after that 82 degree reading in 1990 you know. Check it out. I'm not sure if KALB got screwed by valley/elevation, but a lot of snow fell in the Upstate.

This is an exciting time for weather, for me... We have these impressive positive departures, perhaps not so much in extremeness, but in length of time as also being an important characterization of this mid month.

Yet there are hints of cold storminess on the distant horizon. Very interesting.

March 30? Couldn't have been more than 4", that's the daily snowfall record for Albany that day set in 1911.

LOL, hopefully the GFS isn't right next week for those who thought days and days of 80+

Yeah, you can see how subtle variation in the placement of the ridge node across a single run tries to destroy 10 cycles of clad trend. Eh, maybe...

Yeah it might be a little too aggressive with that. So the cold front goes from Montreal at hr 192 to DC at hr 204. OK...lol. Probably a product of truncation right there.

It was March 21st (or maybe the 20th) in 1990. My memory was off. That's even more interesting because it is only five days after the 82F.

That's the storm where Gloria Estefan (of Miami Soundmachine)'s bus crashed in the snowstorm in Scranton, PA. So it has to be one of those days.

Published: March 21, 1990

Gloria Estefan, lead singer of the musical group Miami Sound Machine, suffered a broken vertebra today when a truck ran into the band's bus on a snow-covered highway in the Poconos.

The doctor who treated the 32-year-old Ms. Estefan said she had not suffered any paralysis, and a hospital spokeswoman said she was in stable condition.

The accident occurred on Interstate 380 near Tobyhanna. Ms. Estefan and six other people, including her husband and son and the driver of the truck, were admitted to Community Medical Center in Scranton.

Only two years ago in 2010, we had a hot Easter weekend and we got to 82 all the way up here in Peacham on Saturday the 3rd.. We actually had a wading pool out to play in during the afternoon. On the 17th we had a couple of inches of snow and then on the 27th/28th we had 14 inches of snow and much of northern Vermont got over a foot. I think the April 27, 28 storm is still the biggest snowfall i have gotten in our three winters in this house. Here is the old Eastern WX thread which covers the heat as well as the storm. I believe the storm photos and totals are at page 19, 20. My last post on it said 10 inches but we were not done with the snow yet and my memory is we topped out at 14 inches.

Looks like ALB set record QPF for that day, 1.70" on 3/20/1990. Considering we did not break the snowfall record of 7"...looks like it was mostly rain in the valley.

Amazing! Down here in SNE we had mostly rain. I recorded 0.83" of precip and a big fat T for snow. Gotta love it!

Few locations might get a thunderstorm ... The NAM has been flagging < 0 LI's for a few runs now. Interesting to see the DP spike to the low to mid 50s. I am wondering if the previous CAPE calculations might have been too low? Now we have sun wedge in SNE, with a line of convection approaching eastern NYS

Sun's out very intensely here John, feels like a May day. We have warmed nicely to 66 with a dew point of 56. Wouldn't be surprised to hear a rumble as these may ramp up after they go through the HV.
