Most people don't really rank 2/06 very high because the snow disappeared so quickly and didn't shut down the city the way other blizzards did. 2010-11 would certainly rivaled 95-96 if Feb/March had turned out better but snow on the ground consecutively from 12-26 thru mid Feb. was certainly impressive. the ratings are not for snowfall only...I could expand on the criteria for the ratings...I could add more snowfall data and temperature data...This is not my list...Mine would be slightly different...I measured 48.4" of snow and ice in 1993-94 and 72.6" in 1995-96 in Brooklyn...But both years are near the record for the most hours with frozen precipitation falling... There were an insane amount of snow days that winter in the burbs. 93-94 is the record for most 1"+ storms in NYC since recorded history. I believe the # was 19. I will add in snow cover...Should I break it down 4-10+" or just use 1" or more?...If I do I will add days 32 or lower for a max or some other temperature stat...I'll try to rate the greatest winters since 1947 but I'll leave off the worst because no other years are worse than 2001-02... I'd gather that 93-94 had snow on the ground more often than 95-96 due to the amount of events and cold temps. It was basically nonstop from late Dec through the 3rd week of February.
