Brian5671
92-93 doesnt get alot of love, but that was the year of the Big Dec noreaster which was an elevation storm for most, but the damage to the coastline in Western CT and NJ shore was profound-storm pounded for 2-3 days. and then of course March 93.... Our numbers are usually fairly similar...though not always. http://www.bnl.gov/weather/4cast/MonthlySnowfall.htm The other eleven years were either mediocre or poor (mainly poor) and so trying to differentiate amongst them is not worth my energy... Sundog
Only one that doesn't make sense is 99-00. The cold in January gives it an artificially high position. That year was basically a 2-3 week winter. Plus I remember that dry slot from hell that rolled through during the only significant storm of that winter. There should be minus points for stuff like that lol Great work btw.

green tube
IMBY.... i'd gladly re-live 2010 and 2011 before 1994. 1994 was harsh, but extremely frustrating...... tons of freezing rain and sleet which could have been snow. i think 1996 blows away 1994 here in C-NJ (80" of snow vs. 48"). snow trumps all for me. This meme that "Long Beach's climate is mammothificastimalistically different from everybody else's" is getting old. We get less snow than a lot of you (which is rubbed in repeatedly), and generally less interesting weather, but it's not like we somehow occupy the tropics. In the last few winters we had about the same amount of snow as the rest of the tri-state, and we've had our share of lollipop totals as well from snowstorms. I actually grew up in Wantagh right on the water so a few miles north of LB. 94 had several storms where the immediate south shore was just south of the coastal front and we change to sleet and freezing rain. Ironically i was just thinking about it today (because I just started swimming masters) but I used to swim on a team that practiced north of the LIE and remember that winter sooooooooo well as a result. I can remember several times where we had a sleet to rain situation in Wantagh and all snow up on the north shore. There was an amazing delineation that winter right around the LIE, I would assume from my observations the north shore got at least 10 more inches then the south that winter. That winter sparked my love for winter storms and even at 12 I was fascinated with the coastal front. That winter was the ultimate coastal front winter. As far as LB having bad weather, true we get less snow and thunderstorms but I will take being able to walk to the beach in 5 minutes and be able to see the raw power of a noreaster in the ocean! Truth be told, the difference was more like 20 inches. In 1993-94, Nassau and far western Suffolk had their most substantial gradient (snowfall wise) winter that I can recall, with the N. Shore in the neighborhood of 60 inches of snow on the season and the South Shore close to (and in some cases under ) 40 inches. That was the last winter I lived in Plainview (east central Nassau) and I measured 47 inches.

I remember the ice cutting down our snow totals here that winter. With the block shifted back more to the NW,the storm tracks got too close for comfort here and the upper levels warmed while the cold tried to hang in at the surface. This map is rough but you get an idea of how sharp a snow gradient there was. I would rate it exactly as uncle did here also since that was my number one winter for ice, cold, and snow combined in the last 20 years.

Stormlover74
For me 00-01 is miles ahead of 99-00. Mostly small events and one decent even in January but I dry slotted most of the day and ended up with less than 6". I got 17" from 12/30/00 and 2 nice storms in February so even with the March bust for me it was a better winter overall.
