For my location, I'd go:

1/1995 -1996: 90.8"

2/ 2004 -2005: 78.5"

3/ 2010 -2011: 61.5"

4/ 2002 -2003: 62.1"

5/ 2003 -2004: 60.2"

6/ 2009- 2010: 67.8"

7/ 1993 -1994: 55.0"

8/ 2000- 2001: 51.2"

9/ 2008 -2009: 43.0"

The snowfall totals listed next to the years are not from my house but rather those recorded at NWS Upton, 10 miles or so to my ESE. Our numbers are usually fairly similar...though not always.

http://www.bnl.gov/weather/4cast/MonthlySnowfall.htm

The other eleven years were either mediocre or poor (mainly poor) and so trying to differentiate amongst them is not worth my energy...

I love seeing the different lists for those on the island vs say someone in Orange County.....its cool seeing how much different certain years were for our area.

Only one that doesn't make sense is 99-00. The cold in January gives it an artificially high position. That year was basically a 2-3 week winter.

Plus I remember that dry slot from hell that rolled through during the only significant storm of that winter. There should be minus points for stuff like that lol

Great work btw.

93/94 definitly wasnt great on the south shore of LI. Allthough we did have a nice ice storm I willl never forget, best of my lifetime.

What?

I remember growing up in melville, mid-island, the winter was so "bad", my 4th grade teacher had us all write a poem called,

"This hard winter of '94...."

You long beach people need your own thread.

1994 was a crazy winter here too. I remember it (vaguely, I was very young). :axe:

This meme that "Long Beach's climate is mammothificastimalistically different from everybody else's" is getting old. We get less snow than a lot of you (which is rubbed in repeatedly), and generally less interesting weather, but it's not like we somehow occupy the tropics. In the last few winters we had about the same amount of snow as the rest of the tri-state, and we've had our share of lollipop totals as well from snowstorms.

I actually grew up in Wantagh right on the water so a few miles north of LB. 94 had several storms where the immediate south shore was just south of the coastal front and we change to sleet and freezing rain. Ironically i was just thinking about it today (because I just started swimming masters) but I used to swim on a team that practiced north of the LIE and remember that winter sooooooooo well as a result. I can remember several times where we had a sleet to rain situation in Wantagh and all snow up on the north shore. There was an amazing delineation that winter right around the LIE, I would assume from my observations the north shore got at least 10 more inches then the south that winter. That winter sparked my love for winter storms and even at 12 I was fascinated with the coastal front. That winter was the ultimate coastal front winter.

As far as LB having bad weather, true we get less snow and thunderstorms but I will take being able to walk to the beach in 5 minutes and be able to see the raw power of a noreaster in the ocean!

Truth be told, the difference was more like 20 inches. In 1993-94, Nassau and far western Suffolk had their most substantial gradient (snowfall wise) winter that I can recall, with the N. Shore in the neighborhood of 60 inches of snow on the season and the South Shore close to (and in some cases under ) 40 inches. That was the last winter I lived in Plainview (east central Nassau) and I measured 47 inches.

I remember the ice cutting down our snow totals here that winter. With the block shifted back more to the NW,the storm

tracks got too close for comfort here and the upper levels warmed while the cold tried to hang in at the surface.

This map is rough but you get an idea of how sharp a snow gradient there was. I would rate it exactly as uncle

did here also since that was my number one winter for ice, cold, and snow combined in the last 20 years.

NYC had 53.4" in 93-94. I believe LGA had close to 60"

Long Beach got about 38-43 inches that winter with the coastal front bumping north of us quite a bit more than we normally see here when NYC gets that much.

My point is that the map shows NYC in the 25-50" shade. When they got 53.4"

I believe LGA reported close to, if not more then, 60".

That's why I said it was a rough map. It's not an accurate point to point map but it shows the steep gradient from north to south. Check out the spread between Philly and Allentown that year.

Do you have the seasonal snow totals for LGA? Thanks.

For me 00-01 is miles ahead of 99-00. Mostly small events and one decent even in January but I dry slotted most of the day and ended up with less than 6". I got 17" from 12/30/00 and 2 nice storms in February so even with the March bust for me it was a better winter overall.

You left off the big event 12/30/00.

the ratings are not for snowfall only...I could expand on the criteria for the ratings...I could add more snowfall data and temperature data...This is not my list...Mine would be slightly different...I measured 48.4" of snow and ice in 1993-94 and 72.6" in 1995-96 in Brooklyn...But both years are near the record for the most hours with frozen precipitation falling...

93-94 is the record for most 1"+ storms in NYC since recorded history. I believe the # was 19.
