Why do people like hot temps? It's disgusting.

I don't like anything other than room temps.

But extreme temps are cool, along with many other forms of extreme weather.

Hence why I can't call this winter a failure, since it produced record October snow.

yup, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to notice that our summers are getting hotter and that winter isnt getting any colder.

More daytime highs in the 90s. Even more noticeable here in the city is the number of nighttime lows that stay above 80F. The last 6 Julys the avg high/low has been 85/71 (2006), 82/68 (2007), 86/71 (2008), 80/65 (2009), 90/73 (2010), 89/72 (2011). The last two summers are without precedent except for 1999 (with avg highs around 90). July 2010 had 3 nights with 80F+ mins, July 2011 had 2 (but one was 84F). Before that the last 80F+ min in July was in 2002.

Looking at the entire JJA period, in the last two summers:

Avg daily temps 90F+:

2010: 2

2011: 2 (hottest day ever, avg daily temp of 94F)

The last 90+ day was in Aug 2001 (93F). To have any day where the avg daily temp is 90F+ at this latitude is completely insane as it is. To have back to back years with 2 each has got to be close to unprecedented.

I just hope we don't see over 100 degrees this summer. That day where it reached over 100 last summer was insane. I reached 104.

He wrecked it for me. Moved to within 20 miles of me and we got hosed

;)

Yep. He ruined it for everyone lol. How much snow do you have for the winter?

It was the warmest day on record and the second highest temp recorded on record for NYC, so chances we see that again are remote. But I guess in this era of extreme torch it could happen. Back to back summers where we got into the mid 100s with lows in the low/mid 80s is kind of crazy.

However, this summer I'm going for at least one 80F dewpoint. We got damn close last summer, and DCA got up to 81F one evening if I remember correctly.

My sig says it all.. around 45"

Avg around 76 or so. October makes it look better than it was. Where Tubes (Nate) moved to usually gets more than me, probably 80-85" is my guess. It has been a tough year for him on the slopes of Mt Monadnock

When it comes to summer heat in N. America...or at least potential summer heat...latitude borders on irrelevant...at least south of say 55 N...elevation is probably more important.

luckily our summer climo is headed in the opposite direction of your wishes

I don't know if two summers constitute a trend...truth be told, there have been quite a number of cool summers in the area since the hellish 1988 one was laid to rest...

Potential summer heat perhaps. But extended periods of suffocating warmth, it certainly is important. Try spending a July or August in NC vs NY.

point and case, you can only think of 1 year that was very below normal. I can think of like 10 torched summers off the top of my head

???

90 degree days by summer:

2003- 9

2004 - 2

2006 - 8

2007 - 10

2008 - 12

2009 - 7

NYC averages 14.9 days of 90+ degrees a year. In the past 10 years, 6 years were well below that average. NYC did not see a 100 degree day from 2002-2009. Not 1.

The average temps of course have risen in the past 40 years of summers. Thats mostly due to UHI and global warming (whether man made or natural).

But these 6 winters I listed are FAR from a torch and FAR from, hot summers.

If you are wondering why LGA has so many more than NYC...

That would've affected the overall average 90+ degree days. NYC and LGA both average the same 90+ degree days a year.

The area around LGA has underwent major urbanization since the 1960's and has been affected greatly by urban heat effect.
