AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE MILWAUKEE/SULLIVAN WI

334 PM CST FRI MAR 2 2012

SHORT TERM

TONIGHT AND SATURDAY

FORECAST CONFIDENCE HIGH.

STRONG FRONTOGENESIS RESPONSE BAND CURRENTLY OVER THE FORECAST AREA

AND PRODUCING MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW ACROSS MOST OF THE AREA. SOME

THUNDER ALSO BEING REPORTED WITHIN THE HEAVY SNOW BANDS. ALREADY

SEEING AMOUNTS OF 2 TO 4 INCHES ACROSS SOME LOCATIONS IN THE WESTERN

COUNTIES IN ABOUT 3 HOURS.

AREAS IN THE FAR SOUTHEAST COUNTIES STILL SEEING SOME LIGHT RAIN MIX

IN...BUT THESE AREAS SHOULD CHANGE OVER TO SNOW WITHIN THE HOUR. THE

BACK EDGE OF THE STRONG LIFT HAS MOVED INTO THE FAR WESTERN

COUNTIES...A BIT FASTER THAN WAS THOUGHT. THERE IS EVIDENCE OF

ANOTHER FRONTOGENETIC BAND JUST WEST OF THE AREA...SO THIS SHOULD

MOVE IN TO GIVE MORE SNOW TO THAT AREA.

EXPECT MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW THROUGH MID EVENING IN MAINLY THE

CENTRAL AND EASTERN COUNTIES...WITH POSSIBLE THUNDER IN THE HEAVY

SNOW BANDS. THIS BAND SHOULD LINGER ACROSS THE NORTHEAST COUNTIES

LATER THIS EVENING...SO THE HEAVIEST SNOW AMOUNTS SHOULD BE IN THIS

AREA. EXPECT TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 3 TO 6 INCHES IN THE

WESTERN HALF OF THE AREA...WITH 5 TO 8 INCHES IN THE EAST...AND 6 TO

9 INCHES TOWARD SHEBOYGAN COUNTY.

The locals here are saying this is supposed to be the biggest storm in years. Turn on the weather channel all they talk about is tornadoes, cant believe how bad it is. Heres a few pics.

BTW I estimate the snow depth at 15-16" here pre-storm. Spots near trees as low as 7" but then as high as 23" in some of the hilly areas. Overall avg is 15-16". Theres exactly a 2-inch base in parking lot so I can use that as a sort of snowboard so to speak lol, to estimate storm total snowfall tomorrow.

Leaving home. Just a few specs of old snow piles left

Rest stop near West Branch. Ominous sky as storm approaches. Went from mostly bare ground to a foot in depth in 20 miles (somewhere between Saginaw and West Branch).

Woods behind motel. Im near the deepest snowpack in all of northern MI!

Nice Freak! Keep the updates coming. Looks like a little lull for the next 1 hr but more ramping up to the sw

Thanks! Yes its not even snowing now. These were more just mood flakes, snowed nicely, but roads, cars, etc just got wet. MAYBE 0.1" if I had an actual snowboard here, but hard to tell as the only places with no snow here are roads, and they are just wet. Looks like 7pm-midnight might be crazy, then tomorrow I will venture out, using that snowstick as a walking stick. Snow is dense!

Approaching Mt. Pleasant, WI on 94. Trailer pulling well for us although our driver is dropping f-bombs at the knuckleheads out here. Snow is looking good, with a solid blanket down. Roads are slushed and whitening outside the tire tracks. We just passed our first spin out.

Targeting somewhere north of Green Bay where they cashed in earlier this week but not too far to miss tonight's gravy train.

Some of the heaviest snow I've ever seen today. Unfortunately was stuck at work, but it absolutely RIPPED for at least an hour. The ground was warm enough to melt most of it in the beginning, but then it began sticking to everything. Picked up 2-3" there, and it looks like we got about 2.5" here, but some of it looks like it's been melting. Fun little system.
