SouthernNJ
As has been mentioned, it looks like a damaging tornado southwest of Topeka in Harveyville KS. This was the same storm that had very strong rotation at times near and beyond Hutchinson KS. It produced the full scope of severe weather during its path. As it entered the Topeka CWA, the rotation weakened and storm mode turned into a line segment. However, just before 9 PM CDT...radar showed a few showers out in front of the line that moved north and merged with the line. Reflectivity then clearly depicted a hook echo and the classic embedded supercell shape. Velocity data showed a powerful increase in straight-line winds at around 850 PM...which is why I mentioned that Topeka and surrounding areas prepare for it. The powerful inflow quickly grew into a brief but concentrated tornado vortex signature between 858 PM and 902 PM CST. The next scan, it vanished. The tornado timing has been listed as 903 PM. The earliest I can say upon review that a TOR could have been issued was around 900 to 901 PM...made even more difficult because Harveyville is right on the county line, requiring more of an angular polygon. In other words, I will give NWS Topeka a benefit here because of the difficult circumstance, and that the earliest warning possible still would have been too late for many of the residents. Hopefully everybody comes out of this OK.

There was a reflectivity enhancement...albeit small...but the dual-pol signature (bottom two images) was MUCH more pronounced and also persisted two additional scans as the cell (though probably not producing a tornado still) moved northeast. Just unfortunate situation of it producing at absolutely the wrong time. However...this shows what I already feel is one of the strongest points of the new dual-pol capabilities...tornadic debris detection. Very evident in many cases...even some weaker tornadoes. "Debris ball" no longer needed...

No I realize that, but if I was in Joplin, I'd hate to see a tornado warning a county north. Too close for comfort as in nobody wants to see a tornado warning that close to Joplin in February... When you guys hear a mass casualty situation, that usually doesn't mean a lot of deaths, but a good amount of injured people that you need a lot of resources for. Ambulances, triage, etc.
