Feb 23-24th Winter Storm Part 2

Chicago Storm

Recommended Posts

Meteorology takes experience and knowledge. It takes years of watching these storms to understand their tendencies. Wxstn74/Bill Deeder and I saw this from a mile away. Read his blog. We both noted the storm was short on moisture to begin with and had a track that climatologically produces 4-8 inches max. Everyone only wants to hear the big numbers and then whines when the low amts verify. Same as how everyone loves JB b/c he goes guns a blazing and falls on his face.

My frustration is towards Environment Canada. They too often act most conservative until outside influences change their minds...had DTX went WWA...we'd have no snowfall warning. Everyone, including The Weather Network and EC, were calling for minor accumulations until EC slapped up the warnings after DTX did.

Edit, feeling a bit defensive tonight...but wouldn't feel otherwise if this were a severe thunderstorm outbreak with EC's handling.

Definitely going to be a hard fought battle one inch at a time to make it to 3-5 around DTW! But it's ridiculous watching these bands develop almost at random. Like the one that is currently over Lansing stretching down to Ann Arbor. Still have the back side of the CCB to make it through. I was thinking 4-8 from JXN to LAN and they would be on the high end of that. At this point in the game I will be happy if they can manage 4 or 5 out of this but who knows with the backside coming through they could pull out 7-8". Never know with the roller coaster ride this thing has given tonight across S. Mich.

??? I tried to tell you guys all afternoon. It was plain as day that there wasn't a good moisture field with it. NWS on the other had has to follow protocal so from what I'm told most of the time they are bounded by the models and a list of check boxes than eventually funnels down into a snowfall amount.

I'm talking about Environment Canada. They issued a warning yesterday afternoon when it was obvious this was not going to be anything and they've continued it this morning when it's even more apparent.

Nice band of snow coming to an end soon. So much for fizzling out - sure looked like it on radar then it popped up faster than a woody in 8th grade. Just insanely beautiful outside.. We don't get many wet pastings like this and they are my favorite. This almost tops GHD and easily makes up for a nice portion of this abortion winter.

Glad it worked out for you when for a while there it looked like you'd get boned. This storm doesn't do much for your bet but I'm sure you don't give a rat's ass. Snow > money, or whatever is on the line.

The only way next winter is going to be big for me is if I live in Wyandotte, MI.

I would definitely rate this storm better than all the rest this season.

If for nothing else, it's because of HOW the snowfall totals were reached. The 1"+ per hour rates and 2-3" of snow we had will do more for me than the 18 hours of first puddling then fine flakes (outside a 15 minute "burst") we had a couple weeks ago.

Plus, the next burst of snow is looking good for an additional 1-2"

This. I can understand when the general public whines when we only get 4" on a 4-8 call, but to have people on this board complain, I just facepalm.

True, true. I live in Valdez this winter they're probably growing lemons and fighting off dust storms.

If you move there and it become the new Palm tree capital beating out Saukville. :sizzle:

Anywho. Sorry to hear this was a complete failure for you guys. Just another storm we needed to remember the lesson: if the EURO is saying NO then throw the US models in the garbage.

Transitioned to a heavy freezing rain and ice pellet mix. Most def WAA has infiltrated the low levels. Classic post frontal lakes storm observation. Things are really dynamic ATM.

EDIT: winds are picking up and temps are falling.

For the lack of overall moisture this sucker still is ripping a tremendous amount of precipitation.
