sorry for chiming in late here. but looking at what the temp/dewpoint spreads are here in the twin cities attm as well as RST and DLH, could make for an interesting start to the storm. 5/-6 in MSP, 4/-5 in RST, and 3/-7 in DLH. i would guess all snow in DLH, but RST/MSP, going to be awfully close, depending on the intensity, probably won't stay rain more than an hour if it starts that way. and the model soundings could go either way. clouds outside, CU2 AS6 CC2 .

started here with rain/sleet with temp at 39 then a quick drop on the temp and changed to snow once the heavier stuff moved in...still snowing here with a good 1.5" on the ground. Huge flakes with the heavier bands, awesome.

how long did it take for that quick cooldown? 2-3 hours, or say just 1 hour or less?

Faribault must be mixing some snow in as they went to UP.

Edit: Now snow.

I have just over 2" on the ground, probably would have been 3" or so but the 1st hour or so melted on contact. Roads are in terrible shape with heavy slush.... Good job by MPX on the event.

Better than me lol. I gave it a quick look, but I thought the SE flow and warm BL would stay mostly rain with a mix at best. Rates here certainly helped.

No doubt it was the rates that helped change it over, your call was good hard to predict rates. The heaviest is over here as i see montevideo/granite falls has gone back to lgt rain.

Color me impressed. Started as a rain/snow mix in the west Metro here in MSP, but quickly (30 minutes) went to all snow. Been snowing moderate to heavy ever since. I just went and measured snow depth (which of course doesn't take into account settling/melting at the onset) and it was between 2-3" with more to come over the next 2 hours.

Here are some pics I took with my phone a few minutes ago:

Just updated SmartCast at 03Z. Showing the Minneapolis and Rochester with an additional 2" of snow through the next 12 hours, with the heaviest snowfall between 06-08Z, with rates up to .5" per hour across this region.

Hmm, that is actually what is currently going on in the cities...this band is already well past Rochester ;)

Just went out and measured 3.5"-4" in the parking lot (Yes, I know, not the best place to measure...)

From watching radar, it does look like the heaviest dbz's stayed over the west metro for almost the entire event, so I would expect similar amounts to be reported in the area including Chanhassen.
