February 2012 General Discussion Part 2

What an incredible day. 68 for the new record and a blast of thunderstorms. Went outside and just took these shots.

The temp dropped almost instantaneously from near 60 to the upper 30s when the winds shifted from the lake.

So odd to be out in February taking lightning pictures along the shore. Not a lick of ice outside. This would have been incredible had the lake been frozen over (as it normally is in this location at this time of year)

Awesome pics Trent! Was quite the dynamic day today across northern OH with heavy rain in the morning and temperatures in the 30s, followed by a period of dense fog way that gave way to sunshine and temperatures shooting into the upper 60s very quickly. The evening thunderstorms were a nice finish.

But the chances are very high (>98%) for another record low, lol.

I got about 11.0" this month or 28.0cm.

My call for March is less than a inch at best. Maybe April can give something like in 2009 LOL.

I said earlier this month it was a 50/50 proposition. I think right now it's looking more likely than not (if I had to assign it a numeric value, I'd say 75/25 in favour of futility). But 98% is too high. It would take just one storm of about 4-5" to take us out of harms way. The way this winter's gone, and the way the next 10 days look, that seems like a tall task. But with 7 weeks of snow bearing potential left, I'm not ready to say it's nearly certain the record is broken. Like you mentioned, Aprils every now and then can throw us a bone.

If 2011-12 is done in terms of snowfall, my whole grading scale for winters I've experienced is going to have to be overhauled to accommodate the magnitude of its FAIL:

Days with snowcover (>0.5") at YYZ:

2011-12: 22

2009-10: 57

2001-02: 44

Greatest snowdepth:

2011-12: 3"

2009-10: 6"

2001-02: 8"

Largest snowfall:

2011-12: 2.8" on 02/18

2009-10: 5.7" on 02/27-28

2001-02: 8.8" on 01/31

We're currently blowing other cruddy winters like 09-10 and 01-02 out of the water.

I just used your bottom pic as back round. Awesome is a understatement of those photos

...

Looks like February here will end up being about +2.6° above normal. Not a total torch like the last two months!

Wow!! Outstanding pics dude! The combination of the different colors, the water, and the cool looking shoreline in the foreground is very nice.

Got 0.72" of rain on leap day, bringing the Feb total to 1.80". Here are my NDJF totals for the 2011-12 season

MBY

Nov 2011: Pcp: 6.98", Snw: 0.6"

Dec 2011: Pcp: 3.18", Snw: 4.8"

Jan 2012: Pcp: 2.55", Snw: 10.9"

Feb 2012: Pcp: 1.80", Snw: 9.0"

DTW

Nov 2011: Pcp: 6.00", Snw: 0.6"

Dec 2011: Pcp: 2.79", Snw: 5.7"

Jan 2012: Pcp: 3.00", Snw: 9.3"

Feb 2012: Pcp: 1.90", Snw: 10.2"

DTW (7.69") actually had slightly more DJF precip than MBY (7.53"). DJF snowfall at DTW (25.2") was also slightly higher than MBY (24.7"). Normal DJF precip is 6.44" and DJF snow is 32.6".

Where do you get this from? I'll start using this for mine too if DVN makes it available. Would definitely save a lot of time lol.

I use a program called Cumulus to log all the weather data from my Vantage Vue. This program also updates Weather Underground, CWOP and Twitter.

Much better than manually entering the data into a spreadsheet.

I use a program called Cumulus to log all the weather data from my Vantage Vue. This program also updates Weather Underground, CWOP and Twitter.

Much better than manually entering the data into a spreadsheet.

Interesting. I've been using Virtual Weather Station for the uploading to WU and APRS. I'll have to check to see if it has a similar feature.
