Have you seen some of the newer episodes? There was one called "Storm of the Century". A hurricane was going to directly hit Philly and the gang went to their usual debauchery trying to prepare for the storm (and get the hot news reporter to ride out the storm at the bar with them). Then at the end of the episode the forecast ended up being wrong and they were only supposed to get drizzle instead.

The difference between model runs that bring the storm up the close and the ones that skirt it off NC/VA is the alignment of the northern and southern streams.

Here is the 18z vs 00z GFS. The 18z clearly has phased the northern and southern shortwaves resulting in a more powerful, westward storm.

The UKMET has a look similar to the 00z GFS. If I were to extrapolate the 72 hour position, I would think it follows a similar path to 00z GFS.

Not surprisingly the Euro has now made a major adjustment towards the GFS handling of the northern stream feature near Montana at 30 hr. It remains to be seen if the GFS was too aggressive and they'll meet somewhere in the middle. But this run is definitely more amplified with that feature when compared to the 12z run -- not even remotely similar.
