There was some sort of aquatic insect hatch along the Susq at Hbg yesterday. Don't know if they were Mayflys or Caddis. Way early for that but a sign of the "winter that really wasn't".

If they were these: http://www.whatsthatbug.com/2010/12/31/bug-of-the-month-january-2011-small-winter-stoneflies-and-definition-of-infestation/

then those are winter stoneflies. Much more widespread in mild winters but their emergence time is in fact November to March. I work at PSU in Teaching and Learning with Technology and on occasion we do work with a PSU insect expert, every winter they get calls about this weird bug that's out on days that get above freezing, thinking it's some sort of strange thing. He chuckles a bit at that one because people will swear up and down they never heard of such a bug. They are in fact an important part of a trout's winter diet.

Now, if it wasn't stoneflies then that would both be unusual and also unsurprising given the winter we've had. Yesterday I saw some sort of flying insect that was definitely not a stonefly.

Gotten very windy in Harrisburg in the past hour or two. Sustained around 15, but mostly around 20-25 here as well.

Regarding bugs, the ones I've seen (I live 4 or so blocks from the river) aren't what you posted. They are brown, larger wings, tiny legs. Light brown color, I've never noticed them before.

I saw a lot of regular old houseflies on our walk to the gym today, around the garbage cans on campus.

I'm honestly thinking of putting these girls on the field this afternoon. I'm not sure i remember being on a softball field February 23 ( In Pa) It is very, very nice out!

You can be in the infield right now, right? Here its still way too muddy. Do the old practice in the outfield thing, lol. Nothing says early spring to me like that.

...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 11 PM THIS EVENING TO

7 AM EST FRIDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN STATE COLLEGE HAS ISSUED A WINTER

WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW CHANGING TO MIXED PRECIPIATION AND THEN

ALL RAIN...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 11 PM THIS EVENING TO 7 AM EST

FRIDAY.

* LOCATIONS...NORTH CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA

* HAZARD TYPES...SNOW...MIXING WITH AND CHANGING TO RAIN BY 7AM

FRIDAY. BRIEF FREEZING RAIN POSSIBLE OVER POTTER AND MCKEAN

COUNTIES BETWEEN 4AM AND 7AM.

* ACCUMULATIONS...RANGING FROM 1 TO 2 INCHES OVER NORTHERN CLINTON

AND NORTHERN LYCOMING TO 3 TO 5 INCHES ACROSS NORTHERN MCKEAN

AND NORTHERN POTTER COUNTIES.

* TIMING...SNOW DEVELOPING LATE THIS EVENING...AND CONTINUING

THROUGH THE PRE DAWN HOURS...MIXING WITH RAIN/FREEZING RAIN BY 4

AM AND CHANGING TO ALL RAIN BY 7A M.

* IMPACTS...SNOW COVERED AND SLIPPERY ROADS...THIN BRIEF COATING

OF ICE ON UNTREATED SURFACES BEFORE DAWN.

* WINDS...EAST 5 TO 10 MPH.

* TEMPERATURES...IN THE LOWER TO MID 30S.

3-5" ehh? Well we will see about this. I'm thinking more like 1-3" which is typically climo for overrunning events without sufficient cold air feeding into the system. No strong HP to the north argues against 3-5" but we will see. I agree with the Advisories though, snow eventually mixing before the change over to rain is going to cause some minor problems.

Wunderground has just launched a new product - Record Extremes:

"We've launched a new extreme weather product this week: Record Extremes. Recent, globally record-setting years have demanded a product that combines U.S. and international record extremes into one, easy to use interface. The Record Extremes page will give you the option to see U.S. and international records on a map and table. You can select any combination of record types at once, which, combined with the map, provides a interesting visual way to investigate record-setting events. The product uses data from three sources: (1) NOAA's National Climate Data Center, (2) Wunderground's U.S. records, and (3) Wunderground's International records."

This is unofficial open practice. We have been getting 25 kids there though. Tryouts are in March for 3 days. We haven't done anything to our fields yet, so we will probably just stay in the grass.

How on earth is Dauphin not on that High Wind Watch?

By the looks of the afd, they are going to let the later shift digest the newer model guidance to tweak the headlines. My thinking as to why they might not have extended further east is likely due to timing. The high wind watch runs from late morning thru early evening and the high winds might not reach the far eastern zones till later in the afternoon and miss out tapping the maximum winds aloft via mixing. Regardless, I'd still look for it to be really windy in the wake of this storm. We're probably talking the difference between any high wind warnings that end up issued having gusts up to 60 and wind advisories that have gusts up to 50 or 55.

If it mixes down.. dear lord...

I think 25-35 mph sustained gust 55-65.

Yea i'm not really sure how that particular map's coming to that conclusion, i mean 850mb winds aren't even near that high. We're talking about a deep lower lakes low not Hurricane Hazel haha. That 25-35 sustained g 55-65 is likely what we're lookin at. Attm i think the best chance for a rogue gust or two to 65mph is going to be in the Laurels.

Be sure to provide some pics if you get some decent snows. The rest of us need reminded what an actual snowfall actually looks like haha.

I will try. It maybe difficult, especially if it changes over to rain before sunrise. Hasn't started quite yet, still fighting some dry air. Sad thing is, 3" is my biggest snowfall of the seasonn, we might beat that tonight. Radar looks fairly impressive.

Light snow now reported at Bradford.

It has to be on your doorstep if not snowing already.
