NCWX
With the warning this morning, and such, does anyone else seem to think we are in a drought? I have doubts on that. I drove a pipe 3 feet into the ground and 3 feet off the dirt inside the pipe was moist, then too me it has been very rainy this winter. With the rain fall from Irene and such I find it hard to believe we are in a drought. Ditch's have standing water in them some fields have areas of water..... I don't know can someone find year to date charts to show a drought is on going? Thanks

One major storm will not erase years of no rainfall. Also, I do not remember Irene dumping that much rainfall west of Goldsboro or Wilmington. Isopycnic
90 day rainfall is pretty low down east. Here is the latest NC Droughtwatch streamflow data.
ILMRoss
Wilmington resident here. It has been unusually dry here, and we've already set up a 3.5 inch deficit. It's not like we're getting sunny skies every day, we've had a lot of minor systems come through. But it seems like none of these systems have the energy to drop more than a 1/5th of an inch of rain, it's frustrating.

I can't remember the last time we had a legitimate rainstorm. I don't mean a couple of passing showers and maybe an hour of light rain with a quick-moving precip shield. I mean an honest-to-God rainstorm where we get an inch or so over the course of a few days. We usually get those in the winter, but this winter has been dry as a bone. This summer is going to be hot and miserable.
NCWX
Here in Pitt county we have been getting healthy rainstorms a lot. I wish there was an easy chart to look at that shows rainfall totals for each county.

downeastnc
It doesnt take long for us to get back into drought conditions, that said its doesnt seem that bad here right now but the ditches and such are dry and the farm ponds are a tad low even though after Irene everything was full. Isopycnic
Wake County remains in moderate drought, despite rain http://www.wral.com/weather/story/10796874/ Raleigh, N.C. — Despite recent wet weather, officials say Wake County is in a moderate drought now. Wet winter months normally help replenish water supplies, but less rain this year has caused Falls Lake, Raleigh's major water source, to be about two-feet low. “Usually in February, they have fully recovered,” said Ed Buchan, water conservation specialist with the Raleigh’s Public Utilities Department Those drops must fall in a specific area, the watershed, to refill the lake. “Unless it is in northern Wake County, Durham County or Granville County, it is not going to make much difference,” Buchan said. Without more rain in the right places, Buchan said lakes and reservoirs are going to drop much quicker than they normally would and push the area into a deeper drought in hotter months. Buchan is also concerned about groundwater levels. John Boyette Jr., president of the North Carolina Groundwater Association, said really deep wells are sporadic and water levels deep underground still look decent. “Everything seems to be holding the same that it has been,” Boyette said. But the resource should not be taken for granted, he said. “There is a lot of water in the ground, but we don’t need to waste it,” Boyette said. Brick Tamland
We seem to go through this every year. People start screaming drought but we usually end up being fine in the end.
