griteater
Wanted to see if someone could share links to pre-1950 teleconnection data - ENSO / NAO / AO / PNA / MJO - whatever is available.
weatherwiz
As far as ENSO goes ONI data only goes back to 1950. However, you may be able to compose your own ONI values as there is a link out there which has reconstructed SST data for the enso regions dating back to the 1850's or something...I just can't find the link but I know it's out there b/c I have seen it. I don't know how to do this process though. Also for ENSO there is this link here...this is ENSO according to the JMA...now this format is completely different than the ONI as this data is not in trimonthly form, but rather than monthly. Now to understand this data do this: Take a look at the first value for 1876...it's -11 I believe that means -1.1 so if you have a value of -5 that would be -0.5 and a value of 18 would be 1.8 ftp://www.coaps.fsu.edu/pub/JMA_SST_Index/jmasst1868-today.filter-5 NAO data by the CPC only goes back to 1950, however, Jim Hurrell's NAO data and Tim Osborne's NAO data goes back much further and here are the links to those: Hurrell: https://climatedataguide.ucar.edu/sites/default/files/cas_data_files/asphilli/nao_station_monthly_0.txt If you would like to explore the site where that link is from here is the home page: http://www.cgd.ucar.edu/cas/jhurrell/indices.data.html#naostatdjfm Here is Osborne's NAO page: Data going to 2000 http://www.cru.uea.ac.uk/cru/data/nao/nao.dat 2000-present http://www.cru.uea.ac.uk/~timo/datapages/naoi.htm AO data only goes back to 1950 as far as I know...same with PNA and MJO only goes back to 1979 I believe. For the PDO you have the NCDC version and Mantua's version, both go back prior to 1950... NCDC (unfortunately the link here seems to be broken ) Mantua: http://jisao.washington.edu/pdo/PDO.latest That's about what I am aware of for any data going back prior to 1950.
