A-L-E-K
+SNPL then? very possible, could also be water from nearby buildings being blown off and freezing. Hard to tell. Either way, ripping for real right now.
A-L-E-K
huge flakes. I want to say +SN but visibility is still rather good compared to other +SN I have seen. give it 3 or 4 minutes

Chicago WX
very possible, could also be water from nearby buildings being blown off and freezing. Hard to tell. Either way, ripping for real right now. We'll go with +SNUP. In Kankakee for the weekend, SN here right now. Nice dendrites, nothing overwhelming though. Starting to stick to the grass, but roads just wet.

A-L-E-K
from LOT aviation VISIBLE IMAGERY WAS ALSO INDICATING SOME CONVECTIVE ELEMENTS TO THE CLOUDS...WHICH INDICATES SOME STRONG LIFT AND POSSIBLE THUNDER. ALTHOUGH THIS IS A REMOTE POSSIBILITY...IT SHOULD BE NOTED. AS THIS COULD ENHANCE SNOW OVER A FEW AIRFIELDS.
kevlon62
Fatties falling in Elmhurst. Fifteen minutes later. Pavement freezing quickly.
hm8
HRRR is a bit more generous with the southern extent of the snowfall, but still keeps all 3" line at the 3rd tier of counties in SEMI
Thundersnow12
awesome frontal passage just now and got some great video. flake size was huge with no wind and then the flake size really went down right before the front hit. Then went back to huge dendrites and lots of wind as snow is now sticking everywhere.
SchaumburgStormer
Front came through and the roads got slick quickly. Still light snow falling, current total .4. Edited to correct total.

L.B. LaForce
That is really weird, never seen something like that on radar either. I wonder if the contrails are screwing with the clouds, and glaciating them or something. It is most pronounced at the 1.4 degree scan, and slightly evident at 0.5 and 2.4 degree scans. Chicago Storm
Have never seen this before, a plane circling O'hare being picked up on radar. Seems to have formed a halo signature the past several scans.

blue60007
Seems to have formed a halo signature the past several scans. Seems unlikely an airplane would leave a multi county long signature in the duration of one scan a good distance from ORD. Definitely a curious looking signature though. kevlon62
We just made it into the last pencil band of heavy snow. Amazing how quickly the visibility crashed. It was nice to have this in the daylight as well. Almost like a wall of fog. This is on 53 two miles south of 90. Schaumburg's Streets of Woodfield complex is faintly visible perhaps 200-300 yards away to the left. Earlier this afternoon just before the front hit, as others have mentioned, the dendrites were really quite large. As the heavy burst approached, the large white flakes were easily contrasted against a dark gray background, even when looking at a high and distant angle. It's hard to describe but it looked awesome.
