The KDIX radar (Fort Dix, NJ) has been upgraded with the dual polarization (dual-pol) technology. The upgrade started on KDOX radar (Dover, DE) today and the KAKQ radar (Wakefield, VA) is next. The LWX radar (Sterling, VA) should then be next.

The dual-pol web site is: http://www.roc.noaa.gov/WSR88D/DualPol/Default.aspx

I was wondering the same thing. Though radar coverage is pretty good with all the TDWR's and such.

I've seen them on the northwest coast wait for the storm to pass before taking the radar down. I've also seen the radar up while "in the 2 weeks". There's a lot of things that they can do on site without taking the data feed down. The main problem I guess with snow would be getting the contractors from the hotel to the WFO site.

This isn't to imply that there's a huge storm on the way, but does anyone know if LWX is considering postponing the upgrade until after the weekend?

It was not postponed as the upgraded started today. http://www.erh.noaa.gov/lwx/dualpol_upgrade.php

The upgrade takes about a week and the teams are on a schedule as every radar is being upgraded to dual-pol. At least the LWX area has several terminal doppler radars for coverage.
