The precipitation blossoming over our area right now is the northern piece of energy that missed the initial phase and is now acting as the confluence which will block tomorrow's storm from coming up the coast.

It's the winter of crappy trade-offs. We'll take your SECS away, but here, you can have some wet mangled flakes mixed in with cold drops.

Not that it's too surprising though. Mod Nina regimes with +NAO and AO generally yield an ugly picture. The MJO is the really the main factor making this storm a possibility for mid atlantic folks.

ouch.. I don't know how far off Minneapolis or Chicago are. I haven't checked how much snow they've gotten.. NYC and Philly are destined to bust big time unless we get a few late season bombs.

Accuweather revised their initial winter outlook for the northeast / NYC area from their intial cold and snowy to seasonal temps and active. They'll bust badly with either version, as will nearly all that issued outlooks.

minneapolis has had 15 inches of snow this winter (oct 2011 - feb 10, 2012)

chicago 14 inches thru same period.

Goes to show how awful this winter is. But at least we have a GFS fantisy storm at 264. Probibly only the second or third fantisy storm seen this season.
