How cold is it?

at it's peak, it's got 850's down close to -24C at 12Z Mon. By evening, it warms quickly to about -16C... that is the saving grace to salvaging at least a respectful high temperature.. Had we sat at -24C, we'd be talking teens for highs, but we should make it into the 20's.

That cold looks similar to what the gfs has for the weekend, albeit slightly colder. So how does it translate to surface cold? Upper 20s, low 30s I'm guessing.

low 20.....upper teens north and west....i would not be shock to see it modify a bit on the euro as we get closer to monday,,,,,,still going to be the coldest air of the season.....and looks to have a bit of snow on the ground

it's always a tough temp forecast when you have rapid warm air advection taking place.. I agree that it could stay as cold as upper teens - low 20's, but based on this season's trends, I'm hedging my bet on the warmer side.

I agree with you jay.....i think the euro did this on our last cold snap.....forcast pretty brutal temps mlk weekend....only to modify a bit closer in time........I believe that sunday before mlk was the coldest day of the winter......

they had some guys with very distinct voices/accents back in those days. i can still hear them in my head. i remember the tape was frequently broadcast at the wrong speed.... sometimes too fast, sometimes too slow. maybe the tape was just warped from being used over and over.

I don't think think it's going to be the coldest air of the season. We had that day in January that was the coldest day. I doubt the minimum goes below 13 with little snow cover.

exactly.. if all the models show sub -20C 850 temps the day before it happens and it has those temps during daylight hours, i'd be fairly confident a lot of places wouldn't be able to crack the 20 degree mark for a high

Damn, did Earthlight and Trials abandon ship?

This winter became too much for them so they quit the board.

It is what it is. Looks like the weenies and the anti-weenies are free to roam now, uninhibited.

Earthlight hasn't posted in 4 days, so far as I can tell.

The Trials has been posting in OT today.

earthlight was probly out and/or bored with this pattern..Not much too post about. I know i just don't have much interest tracking small events

Trials is a "anonymous" user, which means you can't see if he's online or lurking. But he's reading everything most likely and standing tall in the sports thread
