sctvman
This temperature gradient is amazing. Reminds me of that weekend of the "Tuck Rule" game in 2002 where it got up to the low 70s in Charleston while Charlotte nearly had a big ice storm. http://www.erh.noaa.gov/gsp/localdat/cases/2002/19Jan_IceStormFailure/IceStormFailure.html
calculus1
Here's a graphic of the current temperature setup. There's a 30 degree difference from Greensboro, NC, to Greenville, SC. Wow! Cloudy, damp, and cool here in Hickory. It's almost 80 in Columbia, SC!
calculus1
The visible satellite gives a good clue as to why we're so cool up here, and yet it's so hot in SC:
GaffneyPeach
Here's a graphic of the current temperature setup. There's a 30 degree difference from Greensboro, NC, to Greenville, SC. Wow! Cloudy, damp, and cool here in Hickory. It's almost 80 in Columbia, SC! It has been very warm here. 71 just after lunch now 65 due to cloud cover (or something). I knew it was weird but I had no idea that folks 50 or less miles up the road were that cool. Thanks for the post.
SnoJoe
I not real sure if this ob should go here in the observation thread but at the risk of being belittled and threatened I'll give it a shot. 48 degrees with a stiff wind. Was supposed to be cloudy but have been partly cloudy all day. Only .33 of rain with this last system.

Local Yokel Wx
Picked up 0.90" this past weekend. Then the sky opened up as the wedge never truly made into SW NC Sunday, allowing temps to rise almost 10 degrees above forecasted highs. But what a nice way to bust a forecast, high of 62 yesterday. Local Yokel Wx
JANUARY SNOWFALL TOTAL BELOW NORMAL AT GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN by Grandfather Mountain on Monday, February 6, 2012 at 10:16am The snowfall total for January measured at Grandfather Mountain's Top Shop was 3.2 inches, falling 10.24 inches or 76 percent, short of the 56-year average snowfall total for the month of 13.44 inches. Employees were not able to get to the top of the Mountain to record snow totals January 3 and 15. Using this measurement, Grandfather Mountain has had 6.3 inches of snow for the winter-to-date compared to the norm of 23.97 inches for this point in the season. Grandfather Mountain measures precipitation at multiple locations on the Mountain. An automatic weighing precipitation gauge on the corner of the Top Shop parking lot recorded 5.33 inches of liquid precipitation (rain and the melted equivalent of snow) this month. Entrance Gate employees recorded 7.3 inches of snow for the month and the naturalist staff recorded five inches at the weather equipment near the Fudge Shop. The rainfall total of 5.84 inches for the past month was 1.24 inches, or 27 percent, above the 56-year average rainfall total for January of 4.60 inches. The automatic weather station at the top of Grandfather Mountain recorded an average high temperature for January of 38.7 degrees and an average low temperature of 24.5 degrees. These numbers read just a bit higher than the State Climate Office data from Mt. Mitchell State Park. The average high temperature at Mt. Mitchell was 36.7 degrees and the average low temperature was 20.4 degrees. The lowest temperature recorded at Grandfather during the month was 1.7 degrees on January 4. Wind gusts over 60 mph were recorded 16 times. The highest three-second gust during the month was 89.4 mph recorded January 3. GaffneyPeach
46 Socked-In with clouds (I should have just bumped my obs from a few days ago; weeks ago; months ago.) .63 inches for the past 3 weeks. **Something needs to give and I sure wish it would hurry** I did see a snowflake in my forecast Saturday night on "A" site. ; )
calculus1
High of 52.0 this afternoon under mostly cloudy skies, but it's heading back down already. It's been another day in the clouds here, but I like the fact that it keeps the temperature down. The low this morning was 37.6. Not a whole lot of temperature movement today, but no precipitation either.
Gastonwxman
Only up to 46 for a high today and so the wedge wins again with the solid cloud deck...that is, until this evening rolled around as the clouds have broke again but this time moreso than they did yesterday and can actually see the sun setting. I am looking at another week without any below freezing temps in the NWS 7 day. It's amazing how few hours over the course of this winter have been below freezing here. Gastonwxman
First time in a while that I've seen frost out here. These past several days it has either been wet overnight or just not cold enough for such to develop (or both for that matter). Will probably drop a tad below freezing for the low. 33 right now and skies are clear with the full moon still in view.

NCSNOW
In a miserable winter wher a snow hound must throw anything at the wall and hope something sticks. I'm at 35 degrees with a DP of 29. Be nice if that moisture in TN would get here about 6:00a.m. Long shot, but better than these 7+ day model fantasy solutions ever verifying. Had a pretty heavy frost this morning keeping the plants at bay. Nice pic of the moon.
