Sorry that you haven't seen much. It was going to be tough in your neck of the woods anyway. It's been a bad year to get skunked. But I can say that this storm has reached adequate expectations for me personally. Solid white outside right now. Grass, mulch, roads, sidewalks, rooftops, cars, etc. I can't imagine that the kids will have school tomorrow around here.

strongwxnc
Same here man. Good thing about rain is you do not have to worry about soil temps I was however hoping to see some snow... Nope! Good luck tonight folks !!!! Tullioz
I will admit that I busted on this one and congratulations to all who got snow today. As things wind down, and the heavy stuff has started to push East of the Triad, I have to say that the one thing that surprised me the most is the accumulations on the roads. I think the initial periods of sleet helped out in many areas with that and accumulations in general. I always said that heavy snowfall rates can overcome the warm soil temperature and today proved that without doubt. My ideas were against a significant accumulation South of the NC/VA border outside of the higher elevations. Mainly because of the fast movement and the lack of anyone seeing a long enough period of Heavy snow to actually overcome the warm ground temperatures. Significant is a relative term, but leading up to this event people were getting a little crazy with there expectations and maps. Just go look at the locked thread in case anyone forgot. Some of the border Counties did better than I thought they would, and it's ironic that my home county (Rockingham) has some of the highest totals I have seen so far, with 2-3 inches in some places. So I ended up missing the cut-off of significant snow by being around 20 miles too far North. Accumulations outside of the border counties appears to vary from a dusting to an inch in most areas with a couple of isolated areas receiving a little more from the reports I am seeing online from various sources. That was expected. So based on my call over 24 hours ago, it was not too out of line. There are always surprises, and in this case it worked out good for many and I am happy for that. I actually stayed up all night to see how things played out and enjoyed it almost as much as being there. It just goes to show how much I enjoy Winter weather. So for those who forgot, which I know is difficult considering how I seem to repeat things, here is what I posted yesterday: I know I have said this before, but this will be the last time I promise. The only areas that will see a significant storm will be the Mountains in NW NC and SW Virginia. Central Virginia will do well if the moisture can get up that way, and the Northeastern sections of NC may do ok since the heaviest snow will fall after sunset. Areas South of the NC/VA border should only see accumulations in grassy and on elevated surfaces. Only the very fortunate can count on seeing more than an inch. With the more Southern track a couple of areas may be lucky enough to pull out an inch or so. When all is said and done this will be the biggest storm of the season so far and the excitement is warranted. However; by Monday afternoon it will only be a memory as whatever does manage accumulate will be melted away for sure. Good luck to everyone, and I hope everyone at least gets to see some flakes out of this. Time to get some sleep!
Gastonwxman
I find it pretty funny that for once, Charlotte has seen something that I haven't seen any of today: Flakes of snow. Sure was nice while it lasted with that sleet event earlier this evening but never saw any flakes mix with it. Unless GSP's expecting some kind of redevelopment for later tonight (advertised 0.5" of snow), can't really be hopeful for even token flakes here. Here's what they had to say for my area: Mostly cloudy. Rain and snow with freezing rain likely this evening...then a chance of rain and freezing rain after midnight. Additional snow accumulation up to 1 inch. Cooler with lows in the upper 20s. North winds 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation 90 percent. Can't get my mind around the freezing rain potential they tossed in there but then again I'm not a part of them so I wouldn't know the reason behind the concept. jburns
jburns is correct. Guilford County schools were due to be open tomorrow before . I should know. I have two kids. Yep. The warm ground melted their wax statues of the Presidents and they canceled the holiday.

(And your mea culpa wasn't even really a mea culpa at all.) Considering that this winter has sucked royally, just let us enjoy this moment please. Don't remind us that it's going to melt. Don't remind us that it could have been another inch more. Let us embrace this frozen wintry joy without the negative narrative.

WidreMann
I tried to go snow chasing and it failed. I mentioned in the other thread about my car problems. Basically, I was going north on MLK and got to I-40. I was gonna drive around a little on some of the back roads up there. But...I hit the median right after cross I-40 and got an immediate flat tire. Called AAA and they said the account was expired. Changed the tire myself in the cold and snow, with just a light jack and t-shirt on, in the dark. Went to start the car...wouldn't start. No family members or friends would pick up the phone. Called 411 for a taxi company. Taxi finally arrived after about 30 minutes. It brought me home JUST in time to see the snow taper off. At least it was a pretty drive back. magpiemaniac
Bringing this over from the obs thread... I really hope this deformation band makes it over the mountains. Looks to be heading straight toward the piedmont/triad Not going to happen. Ugh. I hate it when people do this. If you're going to make such a terse statement, back it up with a rational explanation. Otherwise, this reply does nothing to enlighten readers. Of course, it still might not mean anything considering the complete and utter nonsense that often passes as rational explanations around here. Steven_1974
When did I complain about it?... The fact you had to state the obvious that it's cold out there. If it wasn't bothering you, you wouldn't have mentioned it. Besides, you admitted you tried calling AAA first only to find out your account was expired. So you weren't planning on being a man to start with.
Cold Rain
I had a flat on I-40 a couple of weeks ago. I pulled off and changed it. It's not that hard. However, after I jacked the car up, the emergency break wasn't pulled tightly enough and the car fell off the jack. That cost me about 20 minutes. I was in my church clothes. Didn't get one bit of grease or break dust on me. It was a nice day.
Jon
Just for kicks, who DOESN'T know how to change a tire? It's strange to me. Maybe Widre didn't have the tools...I've been there. But some of my friends don't know how to change a flat and I'm like....

I'm not trying to pick on you are do a "I told you so"...just that like I said soil temps are often overrated and should usually be taken with a grain of salt when it comes to snow. This was a prime example where just moderate snow was able to overcome soil temps relatively fast. I think once March rolls around that "sun angle" argument goes a lot further but just my opinion.
