From Skilling's FB page...

"No confirmation of an earthquake from USGS (U.S. Geological Survey--the official clearinghouse for earthquake reports)--but our news desk here at WGN has also received some reports of some kind of disturbance and the Waconda Police Police reports getting 50 calls on some sort of disturbance as well. If/when we get more, we'll post it."

That makes sense, the audible low roll was moving away in a southwesterly direction.

I know there was a good one centered somewhere up by De Kalb or just west of there last year, and you cannot mistake that audible roll/rumbling sound once you've heard it. And you hear it get closer, closer, and then it comes on through and shakes good. I guess in California and other places they don't notice it as much probably due to the topography and make up of the bedrock and what not.

Exactly. The ground is so fractured in CA, that the energy is not transferred from one plate to the other very well. You get a earthquake on a large plate, energy will be able to travel much further and it will dissapate more gradually.

I felt the one near DeKalb, that was a 4.5 magnitude.

I guess I still remember some things from my geology class, lol!!! I guess the plate being fractured is a factor in that. I know that the waves of shaking are transferred much better in the middle and Eastern parts of the country when one occurs.

Epicenter was under Bristol, WI. I've heard of earthquake making noise, but never in one direction like that before.

Yeah, that effect Justin described was exactly what we had. There was no mistaking. My brother a couple rooms over on the north end of the parent's house had a better listen to the sound as it approached. He compared it to a semi truck rumbling off in the distance.

Just left Jewel in town where a guy described it as a train moving through.

Kind of wish I was outside in the balmy, quiet, clear night to hear and feel it again.

Hmmm, I could have heard it and not realized it. I'm not too far away from the train tracks that run along the Des Plaines River. Lol, I was really concentrating on looking at the GFS run at the time!

I know someone who lives like right over the epicenter. I'll see tomorrow if they experienced anything. Who knows, maybe will get another tremor. Possibility.

The last and only time I remember feeling a quake around here was sometime in the late 80s when I was just a kid. My brother and I had just got done mowing my grandmas lawn in Moline, and were inside cooling off. Suddenly the whole house started shifting and making an eerie creaking sound. We ran outside to find others running outside of their houses wondering what the hell was going on. I can't remember what it was rated, but I remember it was centered somewhere down near Lawrenceville IL.

I'm surprised you didn't feel that one near Peru in 2004.

Haha. The one that occurred near DeKalb and Ottawa several years back shook up the area a bit better. Was a 4.5 or 4.6, occurred at about midnight. I was up - felt a little jolt and a yard stick that I had leaning against the wall felt over. I think the house creeked a little too. Nothing like the West Coast quakes.
