October: 5" November: 66.4" December: 152.2" January: 104.9" Total so far: 328.5", and winter isn't even close to over! That's how glaciers start forming Yeah, and that's at SEA LEVEL at the base of a 5,000'+ mountain range. I can only imagine how many feet has accumulated in the mountains on the actual glaciers. It'll melt for sure in Valdez, record lows are above freezing from July to August. Higher altitudes just outside of the city might see some glaciation. Glacier's will definitely undergo some expansion. Current snowfields will expand - new ones will probably form. I would think 3000 ft asl + the snow will have a hard time melting completely. I know last winter there was so much snow on Mt. Rainier at the 5000 ft level there was snow on the ground until mid August. The wildflower season up at Paradise was very brief. Valdez 328.5" of snow for the season so far % of normal: 174% Snow depth: 72" Yakutat 219.6" of snow for the season so far % of normal: 302% (normal-to-date is only 72.8") Snow depth: 90" (last year, there was no snow on the ground on this date!!) weatherpsycho Posted January 31, 2012 Share Posted January 31, 2012 WOW I have been to Juneau & Gustavus AK (& near Yakutat) and talked to the locals about the winter there. They say the winters along the coastal towns are extremely variable. One winter there will be several feet on the ground and the next year it is all a very cold rain.
