Central PA Winter 11-12 cont'd

Wasn't an anaylsis, was an opinion.....I'll be the first to admit I was a FOO if 0z models change their direction, just have to wait and see.

If you're hoping for a 6-12" mauler, that's just not going to happen in PA with this one. SNE perhaps, but not in the Keystone state.

I think the post was directed at the claim that 0z won't change anything for the better. I believe we all noticed the cut in precipitation but to just say "0z won't change anything for my personal benefit" with no evidence or even an opinion outside of "this winter has me butthurt" seems a might inappropriate. I can see how this would upset meteorologists, forecasters, and atmospheric science majors like Blizzard92.

Just my .02.

hahaha it was my evil twin rainstorm92.

I used to post a fair amount a couple of years ago. No more. There are so many unreadable posts these days. The whining is over the top...isn't there a banter thread for all of that? If this is still the best subforum, it's only a shell of what it once was.

At any rate, it was a beautiful winter day. Looking forward to what the next week or so has in store for us.

Jamie the only difference is the CC cashed in on 2010 while we we're too far north for the fun. I think Potter had a great summary of why we're a terrible snow region.

Hells yes I did. Specially the second system that retrograded right into MBY. Friggen 10 foot visibility during the height of the event.

Was using the family computer back then and my god damn sister downloaded a virus and crashed it. Had all my radar loops on it.:fulltilt::gun_bandana:

Before that it was something like 7 years (prolly PD2) since I had a foot IMBY.

After Snowmageddon (yeah I like that term...what you gonna do about it?) I was under 2-3 feet with 4'+ drifts.

I had a picture of my 3" lifted Ranger parked where it drifts real bad and the snow was higer than the truck and it wasn't like it was piled up too...or near a bank.

I have no clue where some people are getting their ideas. Most guidance has at least converged on the idea of a widespread shield of steady (.75-2mi visibility) light snow across portions of southern Pennsylvania before the shortwave begins to develop off the coast with intensification towards New England. Model QPF is a general .1-.2in for many areas and could provide another 1-3in snow for many areas. Keep an eye on the BL though as it is progged quite warm around 34F for some areas along the border counties. So once again another wet snow focused on the grass. If any additional moisture is available remains to be seen, but some of the posts on here tonight are way off.

Random OT question: anyone know what I can do with a bunch of stone/broken concrete (prefer around Harrisburg)?

I have a bunch of rocks - like 1-2 feet in diameter each I need to get rid of, but have no idea where.

Take a trip down 83 and dump em in the codorus.... Much worse goes into that creek, no one will even notice

Post it in craig's list? Maybe a construction person will want it.

That's not a bad idea - what should the headline be, "Free stones!"?

I could never dump anything in a body of water, even if it's just stone.

I don't know if the codorus could be considered a body of water, maybe more like a cesspool of industrial waste?Just think of it this way, you'd be providing blinky the 3 eyed fish with additional habitat.

I grew up in York and used to think nothing was in the creek, but my brother volunteered for the survey they did: http://www.eveningsun.com/ci_10523287

He did it out of sheer curiosity just to see what exactly was in the creek. TONS of rock bass, and a lot of smallmouth.

The Fish Commission guys there said a lot of this is due to the fact that few fish in there and probably (hopefully) no one keeps anything out of it.

Not that I would fish there, but there's a lot of fish. Further downstream from York there's a lot of walleye and muskies from the river. Again, not that I would fish there.

You could dump the sunfish family in a pool of cow poo and as long as they could find food, they would survive lol.

Thanks. To be clear, there are a lot of great posters here, yourself included. Some of us "older" guys I think tend to be more even-keeled and don't live and die with every single suite of model runs. I get the frustration of some of these others, and I also understand that some weren't nearly as fortunate as I was 2 years ago when I got not one, not two, but three 18+" storms that winter. I get all of that...

...but, at the same time, there is a "Winter Sucks" thread in this subforum. It's intended to be the place and gripe away if someone is so moved to do so. There are some in here that complain EVERY day...it's old and it clogs this thread up. I feel like we've been invaded by a half dozen Colin's. We all know how much or how little snow just about everyone has so far this year, we don't need to be reminded of it every day.

As someone who was born in 1965, I've seen some BAD winters. It wasn't that long ago (1998 I believe) that my biggest snow of the winter was 1.1". Most of us have become very spoiled over the past decade, as storms like we've seen recently in the southern tier counties on average occur once a decade. That is a fact. We've had like a half dozen over the past 8 years.

I'l try to add some thoughts and insight on a more consistent basis. Thanks to all the good, level headed posters, and especially guys like MAG and JSTWX who add tremendous insight and beyond that, are just plain good at what they do.

Thanks my friend. Nice to see you again!

I'm sure Mike appreciates that too!

Here's hoping for something decent next weekend :drunk:

BTW I dreamed Monday night we got a major snowstorm, huge, 2 feet, on March 9.

So, you can count out that day. When I dream about a specific day getting a snowstorm, it never happens. I am the anti-katodog.

Maybe not march 9, but it could happen in that timeframe.

I remember we had a great storm in either march of 93 or march of 96, I think it might have been 93.

It was around march 16, because I remember getting super Mario kart for my birthday (the 16th), and ended up losing power for an extended period of time because of the snow/wind. The awesome snow made up for not being able to play Mario kart.Edit: google confirmed it was the blizzard of '93, "storm of the century," march 12-14.

Anyone remember what the overall winter of 92/93 was like, excluding the blizzard?

You can see snow totals for the season here: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/ctp/features/snowmaps/index.php?tab=norms

Not sure what individual totals were for the 93 super storm, but it appears like in UNV is was an overall snowy winter and decent for IPT/MDT.

After some brief googling, that winter would have been about average without the blizzard.

Wish I was old enough back then to appreciate the magnitude of the event. Instead, I was focused on sledding and snow forts.... And Mario kart.

For you down there, sure. Up here, it was much above normal even without it. We had 94.5 for the winter, 28 or so from that storm.

I was in Pittsburgh.....it was great. What a storm.

For portions of central PA, 92/93 was very heavily bolstered by not only the blizzard of '93 but also by the great December 1992 nor'easter that preceded it.. a fascinating and extreme storm in itself. Here's an archived eastern thread about this storm...couple interesting post in there.

http://www.easternuswx.com/bb/index.php?/topic/149549-december-1992-noreaster/

Heres the one that I thought was most interesting:

I remember that storm well...as I was wrapping up my FINAL set of final exams at Penn State.

State College got about 11" or so in the first (mainly WAA) phase. But then just before midnight (10-11 or so), temps crept up to 33/34 and the ptype switched over to rain at State College. The cold air was very slow to wrap back in on the backside the next day...but when it did...State College picked up another 6-7 inches for a storm total of 18". The rain in between was a killer though, ESPECIALLY when Altoona (sw of State College, similar valley elevation) stayed all snow and picked up ~ 3 ft. Being on the other (western) side of the Bald Eagle Ridge made all the difference in the world as to why Altoona was able to stay all snow. Similarly, areas E of SC...such as Bellefonte and Boalsburg...switched over to rain a lot sooner that evening...and didn't switch back over to snow until quite a time later the next day. Significant variability E-W in a relatively short distance over Centre and Blair Counties. One storm I'll never forget. The Superstorm 3 months later was much easier from a forecast perspective because precip type was never in question (all snow).
